WILLIAM LONGSWORD b.h. 2013 by Captain Al – Pagan Princess by Fort Wood

“William Longsword is a superlative miler who won six of his last seven starts, closing out his career with victories in the Cape Guineas (gr. I) and the US$500,000 CTS Mile. William Longsword is a son of record-breaking eight-time Champion Sire of Two-Year-Olds, Captain Al, out of Fort Wood’s multiple grade one producing daughter Pagan Princess, and is closely related to the multiple grade one sire Victory Moon …”

William Longsword is a winner of 6 races, R4,901,250 from 8 starts, including Cape Guineas (gr. I) and CTS Mile, etc.

Captain of All is by Captain Al, winner of 9 races, R753,800, including Cape Guineas (gr. I), Merchants Stakes (gr. II), Diadem Stakes (gr. II), Matchem Stakes (gr. III), etc. Eight times Champion Sire of Two-Year-Olds, Captain Al is sire of 77 stakes winners, including Champions Captain of All, All is Secret, Carry On Alice, Cloth of Gold, Always in Charge, and other grade one winners William Longsword, Captain’s Gal, Captain’s Lover, Captain America, Hill Fifty Four, Pine Princess, Emerald Cove, Exhilaration, etc.

William Longsword is half-brother to grade one winner Real Princess. His dam, Pagan Princess, is half-sister to Champion Kelly; to high-weight, multiple graded stakes winner, and grade one sire Victory Moon (by Al Mufti, the grandsire of William Longsword); to stakes winner Flame; and to grade one placed Arabian Pearl (by Al Mufti). The second dam, Dancing Flower, is half-sister to stakes winner Wild Cocktail and to Garden Verse (dam of multiple graded stakes winner Imbongi, graded stakes winner Spring Garland, and stakes winner Mahubo, and granddam of graded stakes winner Oracle News). The third dam, stakes winning and grade one placed Wild Hyacinth, is a sister to grade one placed Regal Blue (dam of Champion Imperious Sue, graded winner Royal Air Force and stakes winner City State).

William Longsword is a product of the cross of Captain Al with Fort Wood mares that has produced seven stakes winners from 37 starters (19% stakes winners to starters), six graded. Fort Wood is a son of Sadler’s Wells, which would encourage mares descending from – a three-quarters brother to Sadler’s Wells – and Fairy King – a brother to Sadler’s Wells. From Nureyev line mares, Captain Al has two stakes winners, including grade one winner Emerald Cove, out of a mare by Caesour, and two stakes winners, including grade one winner Always in Charge, out of a mare by Polar Falcon (sire of Pivotal, grandsire of Kyllachy). This strain is also being available through Wolfhound (a half-brother to Al Mufti) and Russian Revival. Internationally, we might also find Nureyev through such as Theatrical,

Spinning World, and Peintre Celebre. Fairy King might be brought in through Tara’s Halls, Anytime, Second Empire, Almushtarak and Encosta de Lago.

We have mentioned that William Longsword is out of a mare by Fort Wood, a son of Sadler’s Wells. There are at least 55 stakes winners with Sadler’s Wells inbreeding, nine grade one, suggesting that William Longsword might also enjoy success if crossed back over Sadler’s Wells line mares. Captain Al has two stakes winners out of a mare by King of Kings, and other sources of Sadler’s Wells might include Casey Tibbs, Dolpour, Braashee and Doowaley. Looking further afield, we can note such as Galileo (sire of Teofilo and New Approach), Carnegie, Montjeu, , Singspiel and Artie Schiller (a half-brother to the dam of Captain Al grade one winner Cloth of Cloud).

Captain Al has sired nine stakes winners out of mares descending from through Danzig, a strain that should be strongly positive for William Longsword. This includes four stakes winners, two graded stakes winners, out of mares by National Assembly (who is also broodmare sire of a grade two winner by Victory Moon, a close relative to William Longsword), and two stakes winners out of a mare by National Emblem. National Assembly would also appeal through Announce (a reverse Northern Dancer/Roberto cross to William Longsword, and a close relative to Danehill, who is in the sire line of a Captain Al stakes winner) and National Emblem is also sire of Rebel King. From this sire line, there are also two stakes winners by Captain Al out of mares by Qui Danzig, and another from a daughter of Joshua Dancer. Other sources of Danzig in South Africa include Modern Day (by Dayjur, and a reverse Northern Dancer/Roberto cross to William Longsword), Alami, Noble Ambition, Orpen (a close relative to Danehill, who is in the sire line of a Captain Al stakes winner), Shoe Danzig, Lustra, Allied Flag, Freedom Land and Lizard Island (by Lure). There is a stakes winner by Captain Al out of a mare by Indian Danehill, a son of the Danzig , Danehill. As sources of Danehill we can consider Albert Hall (a reverse Northern Dancer/Roberto cross to William Longsword), Fanatic Dane, Newton, Overlord, Requiem, Restructure (out of a mare by a son of Thatch, who is from the family of Sadler’s Wells), Solskjaer, Toreador, Stronghold and Way West (who brings in Nureyev, a three-quarters brother to Sadler’s Wells) in South Africa, as well as Fastnet Rock, Flying Spur, Redoute’s Choice, Rock of Gibraltar, Holy Roman Emperor, Commands and Danehill Dancer (sire of Lizard Island, Mastercraftsman and Choisir). There are also three Danzig sons from the immediate family of Fort Wood – Bianconi and , both three-quarters brothers to Fort Wood – and Elnadim that would be fascinating. On the international front we could also look for Danzig through War Front, Belong to Me, Boundary, Exchange Rate, Hard Spun, Langfuhr and War Chant.

From the Lyphard branch of Northern Dancer, Captain Al has sired grade one winner Exhilaration and grade two winner Captain Aldo out of mares by Elliodor, and Victory Moon has a stakes winner out of a mare by the same sire. Elliodor is sire of Model Man, who himself is broodmare sire of stakes winners by Al Mufti and a son, and Captain Al also has a stakes winner out of a mare by Lyphard son, Trigger Finger.

There is a grade one winner by Victory Moon out of a mare by Northern Dancer son, Rakeen, and a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s son, Jet Master (who gives inbreeding to Roberto and a sister).

From limited opportunities with the Storm Cat line, Captain Al has sired a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Tale of the Cat and a stakes winner out of a mare by Giant’s Causeway (sire of Shamardal) and this would also give linebreeding to the relatives Storm Bird and Nijinsky II. The Storm Cat line can also be brought in through Var (who would bring in Nureyev, the three-quarters brother to Sadler’s Wells), Mogok, Tiger Ridge (giving inbreeding to Lassie Dear, the dam of Al Mufti), Black Minnaloushe, Portrush and Aristis. On a broader front, strains of Storm Cat that might be found internationally include Hennessy (sire of Johannesburg), Bernstein, Forestry, Harlan’s Holiday, Stormy Atlantic (from the family of Sadler’s Wells) and Statue of Liberty (giving inbreeding to Lassie Dear, the dam of Al Mufti). There is also a Captain Al stakes winner out of a mare by Northern Dancer son Rambo Dancer.

William Longsword has a second dam by Dancing Champ, a son of Storm Cat’s close relative, Nijinsky II. Captain Al has a stakes winner out of a mare by Nijinsky II son, Russian Fox, who is bred rather similarly to Dancing Champ. Mares by Nijinsky II line stallions Silvano and Royal Academy could also be considered.

Overall, the cross of Captain Al with mares from the Mr. Prospector line has outperformed opportunity, and William Longsword is half-brother to the grade one winning Real Princess, who is by the Mr. Prospector line stallion, Trippi (a son of End Sweep, and a grandson of Forty Niner, also the sire of Distorted Humor). Captain Al is sire of grade one winner Jo’s Bond out of a mare by Muhtafal, a three-quarters brother to Afleet (whose U.S. son, Northern Afleet, would be interesting here, giving the three-quarters relatives Sadler’s Wells and Nureyev). From mares by Western Winter, Captain Al is sire of three stakes winners, including grade one winner Carry On Alice, and William Longsword’s relative, Victory Moon, also has a graded stakes winner on the cross. Western Winter (sire of Argonaut and Warm White Night) is a son of Gone West and this strain might also be brought in through West Man, Sail From Seattle, Indigo Magic, and through (via Dupont and Count Dubois, who both appeal here). Zafonic is also sire of Xaar, his brother Modus Vivendi, and Iffraaj

(who gives the Sadler’s Wells/Nureyev combination). Internationally, we could consider Gone West through Grand Slam, Speightstown, Mr. Greeley, Elusive Quality and Proud Citizen. Out of a mare by Mr. Prospector son Goldkeeper, Captain Al has grade one winner All Is Secret and The Secret Is Out. Captain Al also has grade one winner Cloth Of Cloud out of a mare by Fusaichi Pegasus.

Victory Moon, a close relative to William Longsword has a stakes winner out of a mare by Secret Prospector, a three-quarters relative to Woodman. It is possible to bring in Woodman through Timber Country (a half-brother to Fort Wood), Hansel, Hawk Wing, Woodborough and Hector Protector. It would be interesting to consider mares by Mambo in Seattle, who is by the Mr. Prospector line stallion, Kingmambo (bringing in Nureyev), out of a mare from the family of Al Mufti, and who is sire of a grade one winner out of a mare by Captain Al. Kingmambo is also sire of –again from the family of Al Mufti – as well as and King’s Best, who both stood in Australia.

It could be worth looking out for mares carrying Mr. Prospector sons from the family of Sadler’s Wells, notably Numerous, Chequer, Jade Robbery and Geiger Counter. The Seeking the Gold branch of Mr. Prospector would be interesting through Dubawi, who stood in Australia, and who is by Dubai Millennium, a half-brother to Fort Wood. We could also consider Strike Smartly, who sired grade one winners out of mares by Al Mufti and Fort Wood.

Captain Al has also sired two graded stakes winners, including the grade one winning Captain’s Gal out of a mare by Centenary (by Alydar, a horse bred on similar lines to Mr. Prospector), and this strain would also be interesting through Houston Connection (who is out of a half-sister to Al Mufti). Out of mares by Argosy (by Alydar’s great rival and fellow line stallion, Affirmed), Captain Al has sired two stakes winners.

From a very limited number of starters on the cross, Captain Al has two stakes winners, out of mares by Slewpendous and Lambent Light (by Capote). Seattle Slew could also be introduced through Salaadim, and through Judpot and Camden Park (both by A.P. Indy, who is out of a half-sister to Al Mufti). It would also be possible to experiment with mares by Camden Park’s son, Jay Peg, who would give Al Mufti 3 x 4 with three crosses of Al Mufti’s family (note that Jay Peg sired two of his three stakes winners, both graded, out of mares by Captain Al, giving Al Mufti inbreeding, and that Camden Park sired Jay Peg out of an Al Mufti mare). Internationally, we might also consider mares by such as A.P. Indy sons as Congrats and Bernardini – who have both stood in Australia - Pulpit (sire of Tapit, Sky Mesa and Stroll), Malibu Moon, Mineshaft and Flatter.

The cross of Captain Al with mares by Badger Land has produced six stakes winners from just 25 starters, including grade one winners Captain’s Lover and Pine Princess. This is particularly interesting with William Longsword, whose own broodmare sire, Fort Wood, is out of a mare by Pretense, the sire of the granddam of Badger Land.

There is not any evidence for Captain Al or Al Mufti with Known Fact line mares (although Known Fact did well over mares by Roberto, the sire line of Captain Al). It would be interesting, however, to try mares by Charnwood Forest, who is by Known Fact son, Warning, out of a sister to Fort Wood.

WILLIAM LONGSWORD – SUMMARY

William Longsword broke his maiden on his second start at two, but appeared to be a progressive horse who continually improved throughout his career.

William Longsword is the outstanding miler colt by record-breaking multiple Champion Sire of Two-Year-Olds Captain Al, and is a grandson of Champion Sire, Al Mufti, himself by Roberto from the family of A.P. Indy.

William Longsword’s dam, Pagan Princess, won over a mile, but was placed at 1½ miles/2400m, and has quite a stout pedigree, as she is by Fort Wood, and is half-sister to Champion Stayer, Kelly. It appears, however, that she is allowing her mates to transmit more speed to her offspring, as in addition to William Longsword, she is also dam of the top-class sprinter, Real Princess (by Trippi). Pagan Princess is also half-sister to Victory Moon (by William Longsword’s grandsire, Al Mufti). A Champion in the UAE, Victory Moon won the UAE Derby (gr. II) and UAE 2,000 Guineas (gr. III), and two legs of the Sheikh Maktoum a Maktoum Challenge (gr. II/gr. III), and was third in the Dubai World Cup (gr. I). Victory Moon died after siring only four crops, but was showing promise, siring ten stakes winners, seven graded, including grade one winners Princess Victoria and War Horse.

As a miler with a stouter background, William Longsword may have the potential to cross well with mares having a variety of aptitudes, and it would not be hard to see him getting good winners over a wide range of distances.

William Longsword is a product of the cross of Captain Al with Fort Wood mares that has produced seven stakes winners from 37 starters (19% stakes winners to starters), six graded. He is a complete outcross at four generation, and at five generations his only duplication is Tom Fool 5x5, although his dam is inbred to Northern Dancer 3x4.

As an outcrossed horse, by a relatively outcrossed sire, William Longsword may well benefit from strains that will give some inbreeding or linebreeding. There are several strong female lines that could be picked up here, notably through relatives of Sadler’s Wells, the sire of Fort Wood (broodmare sire of William Longsword); through the Fall Aspen/Change Water family of Fort Wood; and through the Lassie Dear/Gay Missile family of Al Mufti.

Particularly appealing might be Nureyev line mares, and this cross has already worked for Captain Al who has two stakes winners, including grade one winner Emerald Cove out of a mare by Caesour, and two stakes winners, including grade one winner Always in Charge out of a mare by Polar Falcon (sire of Pivotal, grandsire of Kyllachy). This would suggest that

Wolfhound (a Nureyev half-brother to Al Mufti) would be particularly interesting. Strains of Nureyev that are found in Australia include such as Spinning World, Fasliyev and Peintre Celebre. Looking at Sadler’s Wells’ brother, Fairy King, the most likely strain would be Tara’s Halls, who does have a stakes winner out of an Al Mufti mare. The highest class source would be the Australian stallion Encosta de Lago (whose son, Northern Meteor is inbred to the family of Sadler’s Wells).

We have mentioned that William Longsword is out of a mare by Fort Wood, a son of Sadler’s Wells. There are at least 55 stakes winners with Sadler’s Wells inbreeding, nine grade one, suggesting that William Longsword may work back over this line. Captain Al has two stakes winners out of a mare by Sadler’s Wells son King of Kings. It’s also interesting that Artie Schiller – who shuttles to Australia – is a half-brother to the dam of Captain Al grade one winner Cloth of Cloud. There are several other strains of Sadler’s Wells, including numerous high-class sources that shuttled to Australia, among them Galileo (sire of Teofilo and New Approach), Montjeu, Barathea and Singspiel.

Captain Al has sired nine stakes winners out of mares descending from Northern Dancer through Danzig, a strain that should be strongly positive for William Longsword. Four of these, two graded, are out of mares by National Assembly (who is also broodmare sire of a grade two winner by Victory Moon, a close relative to William Longsword), and two stakes winner out of a mare by National Emblem. National Assembly would also appeal through Announce (a reverse Northern Dancer/Roberto cross to William Longsword, and a close relative to Danehill, who is in the sire line of a Captain Al stakes winner). From this sire line, there are also two stakes winners by Captain Al out of mares by Qui Danzig, and another from a daughter of Joshua Dancer.

Other sources of that would have particular appeal include Modern Day (by Dayjur, and a reverse Northern Dancer/Roberto cross to William Longsword), Orpen (a close relative to Danehill, who is in the sire line of a Captain Al stakes winner). There is a stakes winner by Captain Al out of a mare by Indian Danehill, a son the Danzig stallion, Danehill. As sources of Danehill that look particularly promising we can consider Albert Hall (a reverse Northern Dancer/Roberto cross to William Longsword), Restructure (out of a mare by a son of Thatch, who is from the family of Sadler’s Wells) and Way West (who brings in Nureyev, a three- quarters brother to Sadler’s Wells). Others that would be of strong interest would be the three Danzig sons from the immediate family of Fort Wood – Bianconi and Hamas, both three-quarters brothers to Fort Wood – and Elnadim, and a horse who shuttled to Australia, in War Chant, a reverse Northern Dancer/Roberto cross to William Longsword.

From the Lyphard branch of Northern Dancer, Captain Al has sired grade one winner Exhilaration and grade two winner Captain Aldo out of mares by Elliodor, and Victory Moon has a stakes winner out of a mare by the same sire. Elliodor is sire of Model Man, who himself is broodmare sire of stakes winners by Al Mufti and a son. There is a grade one winner by Victory Moon out of a mare by Northern Dancer son, Rakeen, and a stakes winner out of a mare by that horse’s son, Jet Master (who gives inbreeding to Roberto and a sister).

From limited opportunities with the Storm Cat line – from only 12 starters – Captain Al has sired three stakes horses, including a graded stakes winner out of a mare by Tale of the Cat, and a stakes winner out of a mare by Giant’s Causeway (sire of Shamardal). Here, Storm Cat would also give linebreeding to the relatives Storm Bird and Nijinsky II. The Storm Cat line looks very promising through Var (who would bring in Nureyev, the three-quarters brother to Sadler’s Wells) and Tiger Ridge (giving inbreeding to Lassie Dear, the dam of Al Mufti).

The cross of Captain Al with mares from the Mr. Prospector line has been steadily improving, and has outperformed opportunity. William Longsword is half-brother to the grade one winning Real Princess, who is by the Mr. Prospector line stallion, Trippi (a son of End Sweep, and a grandson of Forty Niner, also the sire of Distorted Humor). Captain Al is sire of grade one winner Jo’s Bond out of a mare by Muhtafal, a three-quarters brother to Afleet (whose U.S. son, Northern Afleet, would be interesting here, giving the three- quarters relatives Sadler’s Wells and Nureyev). From mares by Western Winter, Captain Al is sire of three stakes winners, including grade one winner Carry On Alice, and William Longsword’s relative, Victory Moon, also has a graded stakes winner on the cross. Western Winter (sire of Argonaut and Warm White Night) is a son of Gone West and this strain might also be brought in through West Man, Sail From Seattle, Indigo Magic, and through Zafonic (via Dupont and Count Dubois, who both appeal here). Zafonic is also sire of Xaar, his brother Modus Vivendi, and Iffraaj (who gives the Sadler’s Wells/Nureyev combination).

It is possible to bring in

Woodman through Timber Country (a half-brother to Fort Wood). It would be interesting to consider mares by Mambo in Seattle, who is by the Mr. Prospector line stallion, Kingmambo (bringing in Nureyev), out of a mare from the family of Al Mufti, and who is sire of a grade one winner out of a mare by Captain Al. Kingmambo is also sire of Lemon Drop Kid –again from the family of Al Mufti –as well as Dubai Destination and King’s Best, who both stood in Australia. The Seeking the Gold branch of Mr. Prospector would be interesting through Dubawi, who stood in Australia, and who is by Dubai Millennium, a half-brother to Fort Wood. Out of mares by Argosy (by Alydar’s great rival and fellow Raise a Native line stallion, Affirmed), Captain Al has sired two stakes winners.

It would make sense to introduce Seattle Slew through Judpot and Camden Park (both by A.P. Indy, who is out of a half-sister to Al Mufti). It would also be possible to experiment with mares by Camden Park’s son, Jay Peg, who would give Al Mufti 3 x 4 with three crosses of Al Mufti’s family (note that Jay Peg sired two stakes winners, both graded, out of mares by Captain Al, giving Al Mufti inbreeding, and that Camden Park sired Jay Peg out of an Al Mufti mare). Internationally, we might also consider mares by such as A.P. It would be interesting to consider mares by Mambo in Seattle, who is by the Mr. Prospector line stallion, Kingmambo (bringing in Nureyev), out of a mare from the family of Al Mufti, and who is sire of a grade one winner out of a mare by Captain Al. Kingmambo is also sire of Lemon Drop Kid –again from the family of Al Mufti –as well as

Dubai Destination and King’s Best.

Captain Al might work over A.P. Indy (who is out of a half-sister to Al Mufti). He is available through Judpot and Camden Park, and Camden Park’s son, Jay Peg, would give Al Mufti 3 x 4 with three crosses of Al Mufti’s family.
