An Introduction to the Architecture of the Isle of Man Patricia A Tutt UPDATE 1, NOVEMBER 2013 Putting together a weighty tome such as this is a lengthy and fraught exercise and I could have taken another year to add further details and seek greater consensus. There were originally over 700 pages in my draft and many images, some buildings and some sections of text had to be culled. In the building types section, many buildings are illustrated by a single image when originally there were several, plus all their captions. Even with all this cutting, we were still pushed for space at the back end (bibliography, references, index, etc) so these were printed in very small type and it would be putting it mildly to say that the index was not ‘fully formed.’ This update rectifies some of this, greatly expanding the index, and providing some extras images that didn’t make it into the book . Once you start giving me feedback, there will be further updates responding to your comments, with corrections and further information, as they become available. If you wish to be on the mailing list for these updates, please contact me by email at [email protected] or through my website – www.patriciatutt.com – thank you. CONTENTS CORRECTIONS 2 INDEX 2 PIX: Dolberg House 1 Government Office 14 Triskelion lucarne in Ramsey 14 An outtake from the book: Dölberg House 9 Athol Street, Douglas RB 198/2002 The former Isle of Man Times Building was acquired by the publisher in 1872 and substantially rebuilt in 1879- 1880, when the basement was excavated for the machine room and the upper floors were turned into offices and spaces for rooms for typesetting, bookbinding, and lithography. This striking elevation, in a mellow brick with sandstone dressings, a bow front and a rather French roof, appears to date from that time. 1 | P a g e CORRECTIONS Archbishop of York 224 Archibald Knox, Onchan 298 Mostly ‘typos’ Archigram 73 63 Caption: Government Offices - Building Design Partnership Archive Stack, Manx Museum, Crellin’s Hill, Douglas 337 (not British Design Partnership).
