The Semna South Project Louis V

Zabkar For those who have never visited the area of southern Egypt and northern Sudan submerged by the waters of the new Assuan High Dam, and who perhaps find it difficult to visualize what the "lake" created by the new Dam looks like, we include in this report two photographs which show the drastic geographic change which oc curred in a particular sector of the Nile Valley in the region of the Second Cataract. Before the flooding one could see the Twelfth Dynasty fortress; and, next to it, at the right, an extensive predominantly Meroitic and X-Group cemetery; the characteristic landmark of Semna South, the "Kenissa," or "Church," with its domed roof, built later on within the walls of the pharaonic fortress; the massive mud-brick walls of the fortress; and four large dumps left by the excavators—all this can be seen in the photo taken at the end of our excavations in April, 1968. On our visit there in April, 1971, the fortress was completely sub merged, the mud-brick "Kenissa" with its dome having collapsed soon after the waters began pounding against its walls. One can see black spots in the midst of the waters off the center which are the stones on the top of the submerged outer wall of the fortress. The vast cemetery is completely under water. Demotic Dictionary Project
oi.uchicago.edu PHILOLOGY DEMOTIC DICTIONARY PROJECT Janet H.Johnson This year, as for the past several years, the Demotic Dictionary staff concentrated on checking drafts of entries for individual letters in the Egyptian "alphabet" and preparing and entering computer scan copies of the actual Demotic words. The only student work ing on the project this year was Thomas Dousa, whose command of Egyptian and Greek and the extensive literature in both has allowed him to make major contributions to the checking and rewriting of first draft entries. Thanks to a very generous bequest from Professor and Mrs. George R. Hughes, we anticipate being able next year to hire a recent Ph.D. graduate as Research Associate to work full time on checking of draft and preparation of scans and copies. The checking and rewriting of first draft entries involves double checking of all in formation provided in the entry and the incorporation of several categories of informa tion that we decided to include after the first drafts had been written. Many of these categories are being added to provide social or cultural information as part of the "meaning" of a word. For example, whenever the "word" is the name of a deity, a refer ence is provided to every geographic location (e.g., a specific city or cemetery) with which the deity is associated in the texts of the corpus from which the Chicago Demotic Dictionary is being drawn. Similarly, whenever the "word" being discussed is the name of a geographic location, reference is made to all deities mentioned in the texts of our corpus in conjunction with that geographic location. -
Title 'Expanding the History of the Just
Title ‘Expanding the History of the Just War: The Ethics of War in Ancient Egypt.’ Abstract This article expands our understanding of the historical development of just war thought by offering the first detailed analysis of the ethics of war in ancient Egypt. It revises the standard history of the just war tradition by demonstrating that just war thought developed beyond the boundaries of Europe and existed many centuries earlier than the advent of Christianity or even the emergence of Greco-Roman thought on the relationship between war and justice. It also suggests that the creation of a prepotent ius ad bellum doctrine in ancient Egypt, based on universal and absolutist claims to justice, hindered the development of ius in bello norms in Egyptian warfare. It is posited that this development prefigures similar developments in certain later Western and Near Eastern doctrines of just war and holy war. They are a testimony of the everyday life of the ancient Egyptians for which remains have been found throughout all of the temples of Karnak. Continuous occupation from the First Intermediate Period until the Late Roman Period is well attested at different locations in the complex of Karnak. Settlements are easily recognizable by their use of brick, especially mud-brick. The artifacts and organic remains found during new excavations of settlements give us a good idea of the inhabitants and their daily life. -

Appendix B Catalogue of Royal Statuary Dated/Attributed to Amenemhet III This catalogue includes a total of 93 statues or statue fragments that I have attributed to the reign of Amenemhet III. I have divided them into five groups based primarily on their preserved inscriptions and provenance. Group 1 includes those objects that pre- serve an inscription that confirms a date during the reign of Amenemhet III; they also have a known/excavated provenance, which serves to establish their general location of origin. Statues in Group 2 also have a textually confirmed date, but without a known provenance. Group 3 contains uninscribed pieces with a known primary provenance, and Group 4 contains examples that are attributed based on style alone. Group 5 in- cludes objects with a questionable attribution that scholars have dated variously, but most likely date to the reign of Amenemhet III. Following these five main groups is a short account of objects previously dated to Amenemhet III that I have chosen not to include. The issue has often—if not always—been thought of in terms of opposition between portrait and ideal image, being a major topic in the broader question of realism and formal relation to reality in ancient Egyptian art. After a brief analysis of the problem from a theoretical point of view, the article deals with the Egyptological reception of the subject and considers the concepts involved in the notion of portrait within the context of ancient Egyptian thought. Whether it concerns who the pharaoh of the Exodus was, the background of Joseph, or the identity of Shishak, many Christians (and non-Christians) have wondered how these two topics fit together. This paper deals with the question, “How does ancient Egyptian chronology correlate with the book of Genesis?” In answering this question it begins with an analysis of every Egyptian dynasty starting with the 12th Dynasty (this is where David Down places Moses) and goes back all the way to the so called “Dynasty 0.” After all the data is presented, this paper will look at the different possibilities that can be constructed concerning how long each of these dynasties lasted and how they relate to the biblical dates of the Great Flood, the Tower of Babel, and the Patriarchs. On the Flow of Deities Between Egypt and Its Neighboring Countries Joachim Friedrich Quack 1 Introductory Remarks Since the main title of my contribution sounds more economical than ecumenical, I should start with a question: What does it mean to deal in gods? There is one very remarkable passage in an Egyptian text which laments that gods are sold for oxen (Admonitions 8, 12). This phrase seems strange at first sight, so strange that almost all modem editors and commentators have deemed it corrupt and have proposed emendations.1 Actually, it makes perfect sense once you realize that “gods” here means “statues of gods.” These were, in the Egyptian culture, often made of gold, and constituted enough buying power to actually acquire an ox in exchange. The key point for my subsequent analysis is that “gods” have a strongly material ized existence. A god is not simply a transcendent or omnipresent entity but has a focal point in a material object.2 Also, in order to hear the prayers of humans, special proximity is an advantage. Being far from a god in a physical sense was thus seen as a very real menace, and one can see how Egyptians on missions abroad liked to take a transportable figure of their deity with them.3 This also had implications for the opportunities to expand: a figure of the deity at the new cult place was essential and the easiest way to find one would be if you had one that you were free to take with you; this was the case, for instance, with the 1 Most recently Enmarch (2008, 145).
