Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande - A discographical survey by Ralph Moore Pelléas et Mélisande is a strange, haunting work, typical of the Symbolist movement in that it hints at truths, desires and aspirations just out of reach, yet allied to a longing for transcendence is a tragic, self-destructive element whereby everybody suffers and comes to grief or, as in the case of the lovers, even dies - yet frequent references to fate and Arkel’s ascribing that doleful outcome to ineluctable destiny, rather than human weakness or failing, suggest that they are drawn, powerless, to destruction like moths to the flame. The central enigma of Mélisande’s origin and identity is never revealed; that riddle is reflected in the wispy, amorphous property of the music itself, just as the text, adapted from Maeterlinck’s play, is vague and allusive, rarely open or direct in its expression of the characters’ velleities. The opera was highly innovative and controversial, a gateway to a new style of modern music which discarded and re-invented operatic conventions in a manner which is still arresting and, for some, still unapproachable. It is a work full of light and shade, sunlit clearings in gloomy forest, foetid dungeons and sea-breezes skimming the battlements, sparkling fountains, sunsets and brooding storms - all vividly depicted in the score. Any francophone Francophile will delight in the nuances of the parlando text. There is no ensemble or choral element beyond the brief sailors’ “Hoé! Hisse hoé!” offstage and only once do voices briefly intertwine, at the climax of the lovers' final duet. -

The American Opera Series May 16 – November 28, 2015 The WFMT Radio Network is proud to make the American Opera Series available to our affiliates. The American Opera Series is designed to complement the Metropolitan Opera Broadcasts, filling in the schedule to complete the year. This year the American Opera Series features great performances by the Lyric Opera of Chicago, LA Opera, San Francisco Opera, Glimmerglass Festival and Opera Southwest. The American Opera Series for 2015 will bring distinction to your station’s schedule, and unmatched enjoyment to your listeners. Highlights of the American Opera Series include: • The American Opera Series celebrates the Fourth of July (which falls on a Saturday) with Lyric Opera of Chicago’s stellar production of George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess. • LA Opera brings us The Figaro Trilogy, including Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, Rossini’s The Barber of Seville, and John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles. • The world premiere of Marco Tutino’s Two Women (La Ciociara) starring Anna Caterina Antonacci, based on the novel by Alberto Moravia that became a classic film, staged by San Francisco Opera. • Opera Southwest’s notable reconstruction of Franco Faccio’s 1865 opera Amleto (Hamlet), believed lost for over 135 years, in its American premiere. In addition, this season we’re pleased to announce that we are now including multimedia assets for use on your station’s website and publications! Résumé Basics Written by Richard Adams Updated/Revised by James Gandre A Few Observations Résumés shed light on who you are, offer the reader a clear indication of your current development, past experiences and, most important, point out your potential for future growth professionally and artistically. In brief, a successfully prepared résumé is a road map to an individual’s past, present and future with the clear purpose of opening doors to the future. In a profession where it often looks and feels like others have control over our destinies, please remember YOU have control over your résumé, its contents, its construction, its point of view, its graphic design, etc. Be absolutely certain that it clearly represents you, your accomplishments and your goals. In addition to being an information/fact sheet, the carefully and responsibly prepared résumé is a piece of advertising, an advertisement for yourself. Résumé Construction ➲ Paper – Excellent quality; standard size (8 ½ x 11); white, off-white, tan, gray. ➲ Fonts – Choose clean, clear fonts (do not use Old English, Script or some other “flowery” font). ➲ Length – Use only one page for performance résumés. If you absolutely need to use more than one page, make sure to put your name and the page number at the top of each page following the first page. ➲ Outline form – A résumé is an outline of your past experience and achievements – NOT an autobiography. Once you have started to use a particular style, remain consistent in its use. ➲ Text – Never use personal pronouns (i.e., “I played in…”) and “little” adjectives. Use action verbs, descriptive adjectives and adverbs. -

Michie Awarded William Matheus Sullivan Musical Foundation Grant Miami, FL – December 5, 2010 – The William Matheus Sullivan Musical Foundation awarded ten $11,000 grants to young artists who auditioned for the Foundation in New York on November 14 & 15, 2010. Baritone Jonathan G. Michie, this year’s Isabel and Marvin Leibowitz Young Artist, was one of the winners. A native of New York, Mr. Michie is now in his second year as a member of Florida Grand Opera’s Young Artist Studio. Mr. Michie’s Sullivan Foundation award is named for Theodor Uppman, the famed baritone who was a longtime member of the Board of the Foundation. “I am deeply honored to be a Sullivan Foundation grant recipient, and especially grateful to receive the Theodor Uppman award. He is an artist I greatly admire, and whose work I hope to emulate. My training as a member of FGO’s Young Artist studio has been invaluable in furthering my career, and I look forward to an on-going relationship with the company over the years.” “This is one of the most prestigious awards for young singers in the country,” stated FGO General Director and C.E.O.
