As you know, rowing is growing! And, it’s growing in many wonderful directions . Building Board of Directors on the trends we’re seeing across the rowing spectrum we’ve added new races to allow more combinations of rowers of all ages and skill levels to participate on our extraordinary head Margo Angelopoulos race course on the iconic Schuylkill River . Mitchell S. Budman Ellen Carver Not only have we added race categories, we’re highlighting the exceptional people who are Mike Cipollone supporting new opportunities for rowers . Jen Whiting, editor of Coxing Magazine, has spent Edward Grose time learning about the history of adaptive rowing, development of para-rowing, and changes Bart Isdaner taking place in distance and equipment, all propelling para-rowing onto the world stage; we are Amy Kurland lucky she has shared her research with us (page 32) . We’ve also emphasized parent-child rowing Gerald Lawrence Alan Robinson partnerships . Rowing’s ever-changing demographics present more opportunities for second Milton (Tony) Schneider and third generation rowers to get in a boat together . Through the insightful writing of Dotty Benjamin Speciale Brown, author of the acclaimed Boathouse Row, we learn the stories of parent-child interaction in a boat and lessons learned (page 18) . www.hosr.org Our Alumni races have expanded, as teammates clamor to get back in boats and connect with one another . We expect even more growth as school administrations realize the importance of engaging alumni with current students to share career and life experiences . We’ve added the Alumni four+ to accommodate those budding associations and for those who want to ‘jump in a boat’ with college friends as many times as they can, ‘for old times’ sake . On Saturday, all eyes will be on the newly formed U .S . Lotman Challenge, a triple crown of rowing in partnership with The Gold Challenge Cup Foundation, US Rowing, The Head Of The Charles Regatta and the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta . The final race in Philadelphia will showcase the top U .S . male and female scullers . Off the water, we’ve been working with City agencies to become a litter free regatta . With the help of Philadelphia Water, which generously provides us with 15,000 reusable water bottles, we are slowly, but surely, eliminating single-use bottles from our environment . This year we are partnering with the Fairmount Park Conservancy, Parks & Recreation and the Office of the Mayor to encourage all of our attendees to pack in and pack out, recycle, compost, and donate excess food . It’s a big task, but together we can accomplish anything . Our sponsors, aware of our year-round efforts, have been right there beside us . Sincere thanks to NSM Insurance Group, COOPER Bone & Joint, Visit Philadelphia, DNB First and Tony and Pam Schneider . This year we welcome and thank Whole Foods Market, Comcast Xfinity, Power Crunch and our wonderful volunteer outfitters, League . Last but certainly not least, a huge thank you to University Barge Club, our roots and our future . To our competitors and coaches, we wish you swift racing and a memorable experience . To friends, family and spectators, we hope your weekend is unparalleled . Please take time to enjoy our wonderful city (our extended list of nearby events/destinations is on page 21)! We look forward to seeing you in 2018 . Ellen Carver, President Mitchell S . (List complete as of September 25, 2017) SATURDAY OCTOBER 28 & SUNDAY OCTOBER 29 2017 PROGRAM 7 Meet Mitch Budman, the Head of the Schuylkill’s Go-To Guy By Signe Wilkinson HEN MITCH BUDMAN WENT GAME HUNTING for the first time, he brought down an Alaskan W moose so big it was the world record at the time . His friends and fellow rowers at University Barge Club, where the moose’s head is now majestically mounted, weren’t surprised . When Mitch takes aim at a problem, the problem is quickly dispatched, fortunately in more peaceful ways . Competitors, coaches and onlookers who are enjoying this year’s Head of the Schuylkill Regatta are also enjoying the fruits of almost three decades of Mitch’s quiet, behind- the-scenes guidance of the event’s many moving parts . When he began, HOSR was a 250ish-boat, one-day affair organized out of shoe boxes by dedicated, but all-volunteer UBC members, most of whom, including Mitch, had full-time jobs off the water . UBC rowers laid the course themselves, stuffed registration packets, and refereed the races . Starting with the finances, Mitch helped improve the various ingredients (including such romantic items as parking) that made the event safe and enjoyable . Volunteers from other clubs joined in to help . The regatta eventually outgrew the volunteer organization structure . Mitch helped recruit professional help to deal with timing and registration .

  • The Elite Ethic of Fiduciarity: the Heraldry of the Jack Wills Brand*
the author(s) 2014 ISSN 1473-2866 (Online) ISSN 2052-1499 (Print) www.ephemerajournal.org volume 14(1): 81-107 The elite ethic of fiduciarity: The heraldry of the * Jack Wills brand Daniel Smith abstract The Jack Wills brand claims to be Outfitters to the Gentry. This article argues that Jack Wills’ marketing ethos institutes a means to achieve this promise. This promise is investigated as instituting a form of heraldry through its corporate program of Seasonnaires and monopolising the spaces and symbols of elite social standing for their branded products. Heraldry is concerned with making the symbols of the peers of the realm distinctive and within an exclusive set. I call this enterprise ‘fiduciary’ as the heralds are persons trusted to preserve the symbols’ sanctity. Overall I claim that the Jack Wills brand seeks this through its corporate program. Imitation-heraldry is a means to create the value of the brand as ‘fiduciary value’, community trust in the products and its worth. The ethic and politics that accompany the brand-ethos is concerned with making the name ‘Jack Wills’ come to stand as an eponymous character that embodies the social actions and unity of the social group the brand outfits. Jack Wills institutes an ethical economy that allocates the branded goods to those within the Seasonnaire economy of distribution, an economy that centres upon upholding fiduciary value. Introduction In the award winning British comedy-drama about university students, Fresh Meat, the character of JP is the victim of ‘the worst kind of racism: money racism!’ when his house-mates refuse to let his old-school friend Giles move into * I would like to thank two anonymous referees and the editors for their helpful comments.
