WINE:30 NEWS ~ 2020 Volume 1 ~

The year is well underway and I’m sure many of you have already committed to New Year’s resolutions. The year is still fresh, however, and I honestly feel that anytime is a good time to pause and reflect. Where have we been and where do we want to head? I know this is true for me personally. It is also very true for our business.

We sat down earlier this year to reflect on the growth of Harney Lane Winery and to think genuinely about where we want to head in the future. What became very clear in our discussion was the importance of you! Life seems to run at an ever increasing speed in today’s world. We rarely take a moment to pause. To exhale. To refresh. To connect. To enjoy one another’s company and a good glass of wine. Our family feels strongly that Harney Lane should be here to provide you with more opportunities for all of the above. Whether you are getting together with friends for a glass of wine, reading a book under the trees in our garden, enjoying one of our wonderful events, or hosting your own at home, we want to offer you opportunities to pause and enjoy the moment!

As we continue to find ways to improve your experience, we encourage your input. You are always welcome to give us feedback and ideas for what you might like to see. Now, in the spirit of growth, change and reflection, let’s all make a resolution! Let’s all plan to enjoy more moments of love, laughter and family this year (or shall we commit to the decade?)! We are honored to be a part of your journey.

Cheers,

Jorja HARNEY LANE WINERY & VINEYARDS FEATURED WINE 2017 Lizzy James Old Vine Zinfandel Composition: 100% Lizzy James Vineyard Zinfandel Aging: 20 Months on French Oak Sub-Appellation: Mokelumne River Harvested: September 6, 2017 Bottling Date: July 12, 2019 Release Date: December 4, 2019 Case Production: 725

Winemaking Notes: The 2017 vintage was marked by a wet winter and spring that produced healthy vines and a balanced fruit set. A warm spell during the early part of harvest allowed the Lizzy James Zinfandel grapes to ripen quickly while retaining their natural acidity.

Tasting Notes: Unabashedly ripe, but keeping true to its vineyard driven Zinfandel fruit notes of dark morello cherry, blackberry and pomegranate jelly. This full- bodied wine is deep with concentration, supple and polished with a careful measure of sweet oak that supports the generous fruit flavors uniquely found in this exceptional, 116 year old heritage vineyard.

Food Pairing Suggestions: Cioppino, Heirloom Bean Chili, Pan Roasted Duck Breast, Slow-Cooked Beef Brisket, Herbed Cheese

WELCOME TO WINE:30, CARSON! Join us in welcoming our new Wine:30 Club Manager, Carson Murphy, to the team! No stranger to Harney Lane, Carson worked with us in 2016 assisting with events like our club exclusive Dinner with the Family while attending Sonoma State University. We are delighted to welcome her back and hope you’ll take time to say hello or drop her a line: [email protected].

A message from Carson: I am so thankful and excited to be entrusted with the title of Wine Club Manager. Born in Lodi, I grew up in Aptos and came back to Lodi to finish out high school. I love the ocean, but something about the valley just feels like home to me. I find so much joy in truly knowing people and learning how to serve them, which is why this position is a perfect fit. I am thankful for this new season at Harney Lane and can’t wait to get started! Visit your Member News page at harneylane.com for my regular updates. I’d love to hear from you!

FEATURED RECIPE Seafood Cioppino A classic, this Italian fisherman’s dish is right at home alongside our Lizzy James Old Vine Zinfandel. Known to be a stellar sidekick for most anything tomato-based, Lizzy James - and Zinfandels in general - are also excellent with soups, stews and seafood, making cioppino as Zin-friendly as they come. Be sure to have your seafood bib, a bottle of Lizzy James and a loaf of crusty French bread close at hand! Serves 4.

Sauce & Garnishes: 2 onions, diced 2 green bell peppers, diced 4 garlic cloves, minced 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp butter 2 tsp dried oregano 3/4 tsp crushed red pepper flakes 1/4 cup tomato paste 1 1/2 cups red wine 4 cups fish stock 1 28 oz can San Marzano tomatoes, puréed 2 bay leaves A few dashes Worcestershire sauce 1/2 cup torn fresh basil leaves Salt & pepper to taste 1/4 cup parsley, chopped (2) 1/4-cut lemon slices per person

Seafood - Each item is optional; if omitting one or more, simply sub an equal amount of what you like: 3 Dungeness crabs, cooked, cleaned and cracked 2 dozen fresh clams 2 dozen fresh mussels 1 dozen large , peeled and deveined

Instructions: In a large Dutch oven or pot, sauté onions, peppers, garlic, dried oregano and red pepper flakes in oil and butter until tender, stirring often. Add tomato paste and stir well until incorporated, about 1 minute. Add wine, fish stock, canned tomatoes, bay leaves and Worcestershire. Cook over medium high to boil, then reduce to low and simmer for 1 hour or more, stirring frequently until slightly reduced and thickened. Remove bay leaves and discard. Turn sauce up to medium heat. Once sauce is just boiling, add shrimp and clams. Cover and cook over medium 4 minutes. Stir in mussels and crab, cover and cook 4 more minutes until mussels and clams open. *A note about cooking with : discard any clams/mussels that are open and do not close when you tap them prior to cooking. Once cooked, discard any that have not opened. Mix in basil, season with salt and pepper to your liking and divide into serving bowls. Sprinkle with chopped parsley and serve with lemon wedges and French bread for soaking. Sauce can be made 1-2 days in advance. HARNEY LANE WINES
