1. Wood Carving Exhibition at Shannex Parkland Fredericton Jun 16 - Aug 16

Parkland Fredericton is very pleased to have an exhibition of woodcarvings from the woodworking collective of the Johnson Avenue Senior Centre from June 16 until August 16, 2017 in the lobby of Regent Hall. Come check out such intriguing sculptures such as “Sheltie Dog” ,”Doubting Fishie” and “Sammy Always Brings his Lunch”. All carvings are hand-carved and finished original. This exhibit features the work of Bob Clowater and Ted Boothroyd. This is the first time the shelving in the Regent lobby has been used for exhibition space as these delightful carvings deserve to be seen.

3. Bard in the Barracks presents the Comedy of Errors in Barracks Square & Richard III in Odell Park Jun 22-Jul 9

Bard in the Barracks is celebrating Canada 150 with a specially expanded season featuring productions of two of the Bard’s best-loved plays, running in two different locations in downtown Fredericton from June 22 through July 9.

This year’s performances will kick off with The Comedy of Errors in Barracks Square. The Comedy of Errors is Shakespeare’s comedy about the chaos that ensues when two pairs of long-separated identical twins unknowingly find themselves in the same city, causing cases of mistaken identity to spiral out of control. For the production, Barracks Square will be transformed into the Swinging Seventies city of Ephesus, Italy, a fantastical seaside resort filled with bustling merchants, devout nuns, shady exorcists, dimwitted constables, and a blusteri ng, egocentric Duke.

The Comedy of Errors will run alongside Richard III in Odell Park. Richard III is Shakespeare’s story of the infamous, late-medieval English king who rose to the throne by brutally eliminating all who stood in his way. Featuring dark deeds, thrilling swordplay, and ghostly visitations in a Game of Thrones-like setting, Richard III will be staged in Bard in the Barracks’ trademark promenade style, which sees the audience immersed in the action and following scenes between different locations in the park.

The Comedy of Errors in Barracks Square and Richard III in Odell Park will be performed from June 22 through July 9, with performances of The Comedy of Errors set for June 22-24 and June 27-29 at 7:30pm, and June 25 and July 2 at 2pm. Richard III will be performed June 25, June 30, and July 2-July 9 at 7:30pm nightly. There are no shows on June 26 and July 1.

Single tickets range from $10-$18 with discounts for June 22 and 25 preview performances and for groups. Two-show passes, offering the patron’s second show at half price, are also available, for $15-$27. 4. Cultural Expressions Festival Jun 23-24

Cultural Expressions Festival presents two exciting days of entertainment from around the world on June 23-24 in Officers’ Square. The rain location will be the Capital Exhibit Centre.

This year’s theme is 150 Years of Diversity, and features over 80 dance/music performances, displays, food, and family activities; all coordinated by the Multicultural Association of Fredericton & ethno-cultural associations. Admission is free. For more information visit www.cefnb.ca. Back to top.

6. The Fling Quartet: Classical music at Folly Fest Jun 24

The Fling Quartet is made up of four members of the Fredericton Symphony Orchestra - Björn Runefors (flute), Ian Burdon (violin), Yiyang Shi (viola) and David Nielsen (cello). The quartet has come together especially for Folly Fest and the players are looking forward to entertaining you both as a group and individually, mostly with popular but also classical music.

They will perform from 9:30am to 10:15am on the Yippie Stage during Folly Fest on June 24. Back to top.

7. Lansdowne House Concert with T. Thomason Jun 29

T. Thomason was among the very first artists at Lansdowne house concerts. You would have known him then as Molly and we all marvelled at the vocals, the song writing, and the musicianship. At 16 years of age, he kept us spell-bound. He returns to our series five years later as T. Thomason and his latest EP, sweet baby, is a declaration of independence for an artist and although you may have heard him before, you've never heard him like this. Having made a bright and infectious pop-rock statement on his 2014 album, Columbus Field, Thomason has graduated to a higher level of lyrical incisiveness and hard-hitting sonic experimentation on "sweet baby". In basic terms, it’s about leaving teenage angst behind and fully embracing who you really are.

With over a decade of experience in the music industry at 22 years old, T. Thomason is a force to be reckoned with in the East Coast Canadian music scene. T. Thomason has garnered multiple ECMA and MNA nominations, placements on Degrassi, song writing awards and recognition as one of Canada’s Top 25 Under 25 by CBC Music. T. has shared the stage with The Trews, Joel Plaskett, Kim Mitchell, Gord Downie and the Sadies, Collective Soul, Fefe Dobson, Dragonette, and Carly Rae Jepsen, to name a few.

In 2015 and 2016, T. took personal time off to hone his musical direction and develop a series of EPs. T. Thomason emerged in 2017 with the EP, sweet baby, released on May 12, 2017 on COAX Records, the first of a series of three. sweet baby is T. Thomason’s most audibly interesting yet, a conglomerate of T. Thomason’s song writing sensibilities and reverb-y, indie rock choruses, establishing T. Thomason as a Canadian tour- de-force. T. is a genuine artist and captivating performer, with the passion of a true activist. He is at the forefront of a generation in pursuit of a life lived with honesty, integrity and self-discovery.

8. Friends of Beaubears Island presents Canada’s Forgotten Father at The Playhouse Jun 30

Peter Mitchell, a lawyer, businessman, and politician from Newcastle, was numbered among those founders of our dominion, the Fathers of Confederation, and involved in the early governance of our country. Sadly, today his contributions are largely forgotten, overshadowed by those of others, and clouded by Mitchell’s own stormy temperament and the resentful attitude he exhibited at the close of his life. 1. 2nd Annual Fredericton Flute-A-Palooza Jun 23 & 24

The Flute, the whole Flute and nothing but the Flute! (and maybe some piccolo too!) Join us at The Ville Cooperative on June 23 (evening only) and 24 for the second annual Fredericton Flute-A-Palooza! We had a wonderful time last year and are very excited about year two! Here’s what Flute-A-Palooza offers, in a nutshell:

 A chance to play music as a large flute ensemble  Chamber music in smaller working groups for duets, trios and/or quartets based on enrolment and skill levels of participants.  Flute technique workshops  A Flute “Petting Zoo” provided by Long & McQuade where you will have the opportunity to try various flutes. Long & McQuade will also have a selection of flute related accessories and music books for purchase on site.  A fun way to meet other flute players!

This event is open to all skill levels for participants ages 14 and over. Don’t worry if your skills are rusty. There will be music available for all levels. We are including a very informal audition process this year, but don’t be afraid! This is merely so that we can match you well with others who play at a similar level to you

The cost to participate is $80. For an optional extra $15, lunch will be provided. Light snacks will be provided during two break times. Participants not opting in to the paid lunch are encouraged to bring a bagged lunch, but time will be given during mealtimes and there is a Tim Horton's, a pizza joint, and a sub counter within easy walking distance.

4. St. Paul’s Organ Academy

If you are a piano student of any age, and would like to try your skills on a three-manual pipe organ, come along to St. Paul’s United Church, located at 224 York Street on Saturday, July 8.

Dr. Sharon Pond, organist at St. Paul’s and Dr. Willis Noble, formerly at Christ Church Cathedral, are offering a day-long workshop where you will get a turn at the organ and learn the basics of performing Baroque music. Join storyteller and local Acadian artist Luanna Dugas for a day filled with adventure! You will travel through time learning how the Acadians survived the long Canadian winters all while creating a beautiful canvas that you get to take home at the end of the day! The canvas of three houses will depict the colourful houses that you will find as you travel through Acadian communities in New Brunswick.

Saint John River Driftwood Art

Inspired by Fredericton’s New Year’s Eve, Canada 150, driftwood art project that was completed by your instructor, Allison Green, students w ill have the opportunity to paint their own scene on driftwood. You will get to choose from a selection of driftwood pieces which were pulled from our very own Saint John River. You will learn to use the shapes and lines of the wood to make an elegant artwork to remind you of a place that has special meaning. This is a fun project that you can repeat at home or at the cottage – it gives you a great excuse to collect more driftwood!

Weave Simple Reed Stars

6. Fredericton Region Museum Summer Day Camps! Jul 10 - Aug 11

The Fredericton Region Museum operates six different weeks of summer day camps offering children 8 to 11 years of age an opportunity to directly explore some of Fredericton’s history and discover links to the City’s past. Our camps have a maximum of 10 campers each week, allowing the children to fully participate and enjoy the week in their own way while also exploring and learning about our past in a fun and inclusive manner. Children take daily trips to nearby sites and visit heritage gems that make Fredericton a wonderful place to live. With lots of time for creativity, campers play traditional and contemporary games, construct crafts, explore our heritage, make lasting friendships, and learn about our past in a very unique way!

7. UNB Summer Music Camps

Come make music with us this summer at the Centre for Musical Arts! The annual UNB Music Camps are dedicated to furthering the experience and growth of New Brunswick music students. Originally designed for string, wind, and choral students, it has since expanded to include songwriter camps, half and full-day camps for the very young, and programs for youth strings.

Every one of our summer camp activities-the music, stories, and crafts-is specially designed to nurture your child’s natural curiosity, drawing him or her toward learning new concepts and new ideas. Through these fun filled activities children gain a greater knowledge of music, inspiring creativity and imagination.

 Music Camp for Youngsters (Ages 3-5) UNB’s Music Camp for Youngsters offers a fun-filled introduction to music concepts specially tailored to younger children. The half- day camp is designed to introduce children ages 3-5 to music by listening to stories, singing, and playing rhythm instruments. Have fun, make new friends and learn along the way!

 Youth Strings Camp (Ages 6-10) A half day camp for students ages 6-10 who have begun to learn the violin or cello. The camp is inspired by the Suzuki method of learning string instruments, with lots of fun group learning, listening, and supportive performance experiences. Students are recommended to have 1 years’ experience playing their instrument (or can comfortably play French Folk Song or an equivalent piece). Expert instruction will be combined with fun activities - stay involved in music over the summer while making new friends and having fun!

 Songwriters Camp (Ages 11-15) Have you always wanted to write your own tunes? Do you already write your own songs, and want to learn from experienced singer- songwriters? UNB’s Songwriter Camp will give students the opportunity to work and get guidance from experienced musicians in the industry. Get instruction on lyric writing, collaborating, chords and harmony, and finish the week off with by recording the song you wrote!  String Camp (Ages 11-17) Since its inception in 1993, the UNB String and Band camps have been providing young musicians an enjoyable and stimulating musical experience at UNB’s Fredericton campus. Each summer, students travel from across the province to learn from some of New Brunswick’s top performing classical musicians.

Each day, music campers participate in a fun blend of chamber groups, ensembles, master classes, performance opportunities and recreational electives. The camp is open to musicians with an array of experience under their belts, creating an environment that inspires younger students and challenges more advanced players. Great for the string player who wants to have fun and gain musical experience, the UNB String Camp offers violin, viola, cello, or bass students a chance to work with some of New Brunswick’s best string instructors. Participants will have the opportunity to play in chamber ensembles, master classes, and string orchestra. UNB Music Camp offers young musicians the option to stay on campus for the duration of camp!

8. NB Girls Rock Camp!

Charlotte Street Arts Centre is pleased to announce we will be curating our very first rock camp for girls ages 11-18 this summer from August 21-25. We are teaming up with amazing (wo)mentors from the local music community to offer five days of workshops, band practice and art based learning that will be capped off with a concert featuring our campers.

1. Call for Submissions: The Creative Connections Conference

The Creative Connections Conference is taking place November 16 to 18, 2017 and you are invited to submit proposals for presentations and workshops.

The deadline for submissions has been extended to June 30, 2017.

The conference is being organized by the Atlantic Centre for Creativity, which is based at University of New Brunswick but has several partners across the province and regionally. The central goal of the Centre and this conference is to increase awareness, and enhance creative practices across disciplines including: sciences, the arts, business, entrepreneurship and education. It will be an interactive, collaborative and interdisciplinary conference designed to encourage participants to ‘think outside the box’, take risks, share new ideas and enhance teaching practices. Students, staff, faculty, administrators, government officials, and the public are encouraged to participate and/or attend this conference. 2. Charlotte Glencross Scholarship

This scholarship, which honours the late artist, arts educator, and activist Charlotte Glencross, aims to support developing practitioners in the arts. The scholarship is open to all age categories and disciplines, where an artist or craftsperson seeks to build upon a new practice or establish a new direction in their work.

3. River Jam Seeking Nominations for Diane London Award

Each year during River Jam, there is a special award presented in honour of Diane London, beloved diva of the Downtown Blues Band, whose final performance was at River Jam 2004 before losing her battle to cancer. The award honours a local musician, artist, or arts-related woman with a creative spirit and talent who gives of themselves to the community and who exemplify the spirit and character of Diane.

Someone who is a musician, artist or arts-related individual who has a creative spirit and talent, and who gives back to the community? Nominate Her for the Diane London Award!

4. artsnb Career Development Program

The program is designed to recognize and encourage arts professionals who have demonstrated exceptional artistic talent and potential, and who are pursuing a career in the arts. The program is divided in four components:

Arts by Invitation is for assistance to present work by invitation in established arts events Artist in Residence is for assistance for participation in residency opportunities of three (3) months and less. The artists in residence are to contribute to the promotion and understanding of the arts by means of the artists’ contact with the clientele of the establishments. Professional Development is for assistance for professional development scholarships for studies and mentorships. Professionalization and Promotion is designed to assist artists to produce tools related to the promotion of the artist’s work and career with a view to broadening the dissemination network for their work and diversifying their sources for funding

5. Council of the Arts Fredericton Performing Arts Scholarship

Students planning to pursue studies in a recognized program in the performing arts are invited to apply for the Council of the Arts Fredericton Performing Arts Scholarship. The annual award is valued at $5,000. It is intended for residents of the greater Fredericton area. The course of study can take place at any institution recognized by the Canada Reve nue Agency and must involve performance or production. Students at secondary, post-secondary and graduate levels are eligible.

Information and application guidelines are available through the Fredericton Community Foundation at www.fredfdn.ca. Applications must be received on or before July 31, 2017. The recipient will be determined by a three-member selection committee.

From 1978 until 2006, Council of the Arts Fredericton presented quality performances to Fredericton audiences through its ONSTAGE and KIDSTAGE programs and encouraged young people in their study of the performing arts through awards and scholarships. The Performing Arts Scholarship was created in 2007 with funds from the Council that are managed through a designated fund agreement with the Fredericton Community Foundation. Back to top.

6. Studio Watch 2017 Call for Submissions now open!

The Beaverbrook Art Gallery is calling for submissions for the Studio Watch: Emerging Artist Exhibition – Painting 2017. This innovative series provides New Brunswick artists, in the early stages of their career, with the opportunity for an exhibition and the purchase of one of their works by the Beaverbrook Art Gallery. The deadline for submissions is August 4, 2017. To be eligible an artist must:

 Reside and produce art in New Brunswick (Consideration will be given to permanent residents of New Brunswick attending higher education degree programs or conducting temporary projects outside of New Brunswick)  Have at least five years of experience in art making  Have yet to have a solo exhibit in a major public gallery or museum  Have a particular body of work ready for exhibition for September/October 2017

7. Come Sing at Choral Fest 2017

Registration is now open for the New Brunswick Choral Federation's Choral Fest. Choral Fest has been held annually for 35 yea rs, bringing singers from all over New Brunswick and the region to learn and perform a major work under a noted conductor. This year's clinician and conductor is Dr. Matthew Leese of Keene College, New Hampshire.

Registration deadline: Friday, September 29, 2017

Traditionally, Choral Fest circulates between Fredericton, Saint John and Moncton. This year, however, NBCF is very pleased to have partnered with the St. Andrews Arts Council to bring Choral Fest to St. Andrews, NB for the first time. Choral Fest will be in St. Andrews, New Brunswick from October 20-22, 2017.

8. Call to Artists for the 5th Annual Recovery Art Show

Addictions and Mental Health Services Fredericton, Horizon Health Network, is pleased to issue a Call to Artists for the 5 th Annual Recovery Art Show, an exhibition highlighting recovery from addiction and mental illness.

Creativity and artistic expression can play an important role in recovery. The purpose of this exhibit is to show art depicting people’s experience of recovery, increase public awareness, spark discussion, te ach and change perceptions. The exhibition will be shown at The Fredericton Public Library during November 2017.
