CHINA TEAM PROFILE - Women’s The Chinese national women’s Volleyball team comes into the 2003 FIVB World Cup in superb form having won the World Grand Prix in August and more recently having defended their Asian Continental Championship title by clinching the gold medal following a straight sets defeat of Japan. In an ominous sign for all opposing teams, the Chinese women's team is going through a rebuilding phase with a side composed of many young and talented players, who have brought a new and dynamic style to their play. It worked wonderfully at the 2003 World Grand Prix and now they are hoping to do the same at the World Cup. Players like team captain Feng Kun, Chen Jin and 197cm Zhao Ruirui are becoming more and more experi- enced and increasingly dominant on the international scene. Their combination in the World Grand Prix Finals earlier this year was exhilarating and laid the foundation for China's superb result in Italy. China is currently trying to build a team with distinguished characteristics on the basis of overall abilities for offence and defense. Under coach Chen Zhonghe, they have already collected the World Grand Prix and are looking to add the 2003 World Cup and an Olympic qualification berth to their collection as well. Results: 12th Asian Continental Championship in Vietnam (September) Final: China beat Japan 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-15) Semifinal: China beat Thailand 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-17) Quarterfinal: China beat Vietnam 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-10) World Cup History China beat Australia 3-0 (25-14, 25-19, 25-17)

Abstract. With methods of the literature researches, mathematical statistics and logical analysis, a comparative study is carried out to analyze the important competition data of the recent four Olympic Games (from the 28th to the 31st) which Chinese women’s volleyball team and other strong world women volleyball teams (Brazil, Russia, America and Cuba) once took part in. The study finds out that the new developing trend of the world’s five strong women volleyball teams’ competitiveness shows mainly in the following two aspects: the training of the world women volleyball tending to be more masculine and the increasing proportion of serving points in the world women volleyball competitions.

  • A PEDAGOGY of CULTURE BASED on CHINESE STORYTELLING TRADITIONS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirement
A PEDAGOGY OF CULTURE BASED ON CHINESE STORYTELLING TRADITIONS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Eric Todd Shepherd MA, East Asian Languages and Literatures The Ohio State University 2007 Dissertation Committee: Approved by Galal Walker, Advisor _______________________ Mark Bender Advisor Mari Noda Graduate Program in Dorothy Noyes East Asian Languages and Literatures Copyright by Eric Todd Shepherd 2007 ABSTRACT This dissertation is an historical ethnographic study of the Shandong kuaishu (山东快书) storytelling tradition and an ethnographic account of the folk pedagogy of Wu Yanguo, one professional practitioner of the tradition. At times, the intention is to record, describe and analyze the oral tradition of Shandong kuaishu, which has not been recorded in detail in English language scholarly literature. At other times, the purpose is to develop a pedagogical model informed by the experiences and transmission techniques of the community of study. The ultimate goal is to use the knowledge and experience gained in this study to advance our understanding of and ability to achieve advanced levels of Chinese language proficiency and cultural competence. Through a combination of the knowledge gained from written sources, participant observation, and first-hand performance of Shandong kuaishu, this dissertation shows that complex performances of segments of Chinese culture drawn from everyday life can be constructed through a regimen of performance based training. It is intended to serve as one training model that leads to the development of sophisticated cultural competence. ii Dedicated to Chih-Hsin Annie Tai iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Any dissertation is a collaborative effort.
