We had some youth shooters THE FINAL RIDE BY TEXAS JOE aka/ Joe Royer This was inspired when I heard the news of the death of Lane Frost, a fellow Oklahoman and professional bull rider, whom I had visited with the day before his death at Cheyenne Frontier Days in 1989.

It was the last day of the week up in old Cheyenne and the excitement was thick in the air. The bull rider got ready to do for money and fame what most men in this world wouldn’t dare. He was ready to gamble when he slid in that chute cause he’d drew a bull that was real mean. He rosined his riggin and pulled and pulled it down tight and got ready to live out his dream. With his hat pulled down, he gave Chapman (bull fighter/rodeo clown) a look that said, “Son we’re ready to go.” So when the gate flung open that bull shot out like a freight train gettin ready to roll. That ol bull twisted and torqued like a Cadillac spring on a hearse that’s out of control. And eight seconds can feel like eternity when you’re ridin for all the gold. That ol bull did his job like the cowboy on top, you know it was one hell of a ride. What the bull didn’t know cause they’re just there for the show, he was takin this cowboy for his final ride. When the buzzer went off and the cowboy got down he knew he was a winner that day. But the bull wasn’t finished so he spun around and headed the cowboy’s way. It was all like a nightmare after a beautiful dream when the cowboy got gored in the side. The crowd jumped to their feet as the cowboy went down they knew they’d just saw his last ride. It was over that day for this son of the west and with his last breath he went back in his mind. To think of the woman and the friends that he’d left when this cowboy took his final ride. Crossword Puzzle Winners From The Last Gunslinger’s Gazette! We had 3 entries that were all postmarked on the earliest day received. The clearest winner was: Specs, CFDA # 2940! However, I discovered that I had made an error on the crossword puzzle itself. Do you see, James Courtwright, the bottom across name on the puzzle? It should have actually been spelled James Courtright, there is no “w” in Courtright. Our clearest winner, Specs, gave the correct name and just left a space between James and Courtright, since there was one too many spaces. We also had two other entrants that were postmarked on that very same day. They both used James Courtright’s actual middle name “Isaiah” instead of James, so they were definitely referring to the same person, also known as “Long-haired Jim”. They obviously used Long-haired Jim’s middle name, just because of my mistake. So, how is ol’ Quick Cal gonna get out of this one? The only fair thing to do is to declare a tie between all 3 entrants! So, all 3 winners: Specs #2940 (Old Pueblo Gunfighters - Tucson), Lil’ Diamond #3592 (Wisconsin Peacekeepers - Wisconsin Rapids), and Dog Iron #4112 (Green Country Gunslingers - Tulsa) are all going to receive a box of CFDA Brass (50ct)!
