The Holy Apostles

Christ chose twelve close followers as the inner core of his disciples, to become the leaders of the Church. When Jesus ascended into heaven 40 days after the Ressurection, He commissioned them to spread the Gospel throughout the world baptizing all peoples in the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit. On Pentecost, ten days later, the Holy Spirit descended on them and gave them the grace and power to convert the world. The disciples became “apostles”, from “sent out”. Since we celebrate the Pre-eminent Apostles (Peter and Paul) on June 29th and the whole assembly of the Apostles on June 30th we will look at some of the Apostles each week.

St Jude (surnamed Thaddeus) we celebrate on June 19th. Besides just celebrat- ing, his feast day, we honor him this Sunday, Father’s Day, because His father was St Joseph the Betrothed, the step-father of the Lord. For this reason St Jude could be known as the brother of the Lord like St James his brother, but out of humility and the likelihood that he was not an immediate follower of his younger step-brother he only says a brother of St James. His preached notably in Arabia, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Persia. He, of course, endured many sufferings for the faith and martyred near Mt Ara- rat. One of his letters is included in the canon of the Scripture, as the last epistle of the New Testament before Revelation. This vivid, short read is filled with warnings of complacency believing we are already saved without remaining faithful. St Bartholomew we celebrate on June 11th. He is also known as Nathaniel in the Gospel of John where St Philip calls him to follow Jesus with the words “come and see.” He stands out for several features. He spent extensive time in and near India con- verting people and after his martyrdom his relics are attributed with many miracles. His relics are said to have travelled from Mesopotamia to the Pontus region on the Black Sea where there are thrown into the water and travel all the way to Sicily, then moved up Italy. This story is filled with miracles along the way revealing the will of God. St Bartholomew, of course, is also the patron saint of our Patriarch, the Archbish- op of Constantinople Bartholomew. Saint Philip we celebrate on Novermber 14th. As said before, he was the disciple who first told St Bartholomew (Nathaniel) about Jesus as the Messiah. He was a very learned and zealous religious Jew so he was able to recognize Jesus as Christ. This fer- vor and desire to be close to the Lord and to share the good news with others never left him. After Pentecost he has extensive travels mixed with mighty miracles. He was judged multiple times and freed through divine providence to continue his preaching. Even at his martyrdom which was on a cross, just as St Bartholomew’s was, the mass- es were converted after God displayed His disapproval. Saint Philip and St Bartholo- mew also preached together in several cities supporting one another in ministry along with St Philip’s sister St Mariamne (Feb 17th).

Martyr Nikitas from Nisyros, who witnessed on Chios in the year 1732 died by the sword.

St. Paul's Letter to the Romans 2:10-16 Brethren, glory and honor and peace for every one who does good, the Jew first and also the Greek. For God shows no partiality. All who have sinned without the law will also perish with- out the law, and all who have sinned under the law will be judged by the law. For it is not the hearers of the law who are righteous before God, but the doers of the law who will be justified. When Gentiles who have not the law do by nature what the law requires, they are a law to them- selves, even though they do not have the law. They show that what the law requires is written on their hearts, while their conscience also bears witness and their conflicting thoughts accuse or perhaps excuse them on that day when, according to my gospel, God judges the secrets of men by Christ Jesus.

The Gospel According to Matthew 4:18-23 At that time, as Jesus walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen.
