What do Atiyah, Brendan, Ciara, Dennis, Ellen, and Francis have in common?

The answer is that they are the names chosen for this season’s Atlantic storms, of which, at the time of writing, we’ve experienced the first four. Apparently, naming a storm means people take more notice of it, which is good, because it makes preparation more effective. Unfortunately, research has shown storms with girls names are perceived as less dangerous than those with boys names, which means people don’t take them as seriously, and lives are lost unnecessarily as a result.

It’s slightly worrying to me that the 14th storm, if that arises, will be named “Noah”! That fits with our next Family Service at Tissington, which you might have missed as it is on the 1st March and I know not all of you receive your magazine before the beginning of the month. We’ll be thinking about the time that the Ark floated for weeks and everyone had to wait. I expect they were very busy, but not as busy as the people whose homes and businesses have been flooded and affected by all the rain we have experienced in storms during 2020 so far, and in previous years.

It is part of life that while we all face storms, and can float rather aimlessly in our lives from time to time, we also experience great joys; celebrating birth, birthdays, celebrations of achievements, anniversaries.

The Bible is full of stories about storms – from the original Noah’s Flood onwards.

On one occasion in the Gospels, Jesus faces two very different storms. In the first, he and his disciples are in a storm on the Sea of Galilee: the disciples, despite being seasoned fishermen, think they’re going to die, but Jesus calms the storm with a word of command.

As soon as they land, Jesus is faced with a man who has many “demons”: he lives, naked and raving, among the tombs, a source of fear for all in the neighbourhood. Once again, with a word of command, Jesus calms the storm and restores the man to his right mind.

You may be experiencing storms in your life right now, and they may have names: Anxiety, Bereavement, Cancer, Disappointment. Sometimes the times of storm in our lives are overwhelming, we are frozen, cannot make decisions or even see into the future. If we can stay afloat, like the Ark did, trusting God for a future, but also asking others for help, for company, for advice, then we might get through together. Remember, in every storm there’s one name you can call on for help, and one who makes our joy complete; the name is Jesus.

Bible Study – Lent

How can we pray? How do we find the right words? Do words even matter?

When we are on our own, or with a small group, or in a church service, part of the time with God is called ‘prayer’.

Prayer can be spoken or thought, can be read from a book, a leaflet, a bookmark.

One time, we are told in the Bible, Disciples ask Jesus to teach them about prayer – they say – the other Rabbis teach their disciples about prayer, and so Jesus teaches them, and us, The Lord’s Prayer. Matthew Chapter 6;

5 ‘And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. 6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7 And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8 Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him. 9 ‘This, then, is how you should pray: ‘“Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, 10 your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11 Give us today our daily bread. 12 And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. 13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.” 14 For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. 15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins. Later in the same Gospel Jesus advises; Matthew 26:41

‘Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.’

It appears that God already knows what is on our hearts before we form a word! During this time of Lent, when we try harder than usual to come closer to God, this advice might help us!

Rev Joe is leading a study on the Lord’s Prayer, do contact Ros or Clarke if you’d like to join that group, starting on Tuesday 3rd March at 3.00pm.

If you want to quietly chat it over, just give me a ring!

Pastoral Support from the Church

Thank you to all the villagers who offer support, care and prayers for those who are in need, whether sick, bereaved, lonely, house bound, or in any kind of need. We don’t forget the times when we celebrate and share moments of joy too!

At our joint service in Parwich on 29th March 2020 we will be thinking about prayer, and the importance of prayer for others in our lives. Whether you consciously talk to God, or Creation, or some unknown higher power, many of us gain comfort and strength from prayer.

We’ll be celebrating a short Holy Communion at 10.00am, and then at 10.30am a Songs of Praise service. There will be prayer stations in the church, where you can explore different ways of communicating with God. These will remain in church following the service, so that others can visit and use the resources there.

During the service I will bless bookmarks and booklets, which anyone can take to a neighbour or family member for whom it might be helpful. In this way, anyone who visits can bring a prayer, a blessing, and fellowship on their visit.

The supply will be in each church, ready for you to take. If anyone would like one for themselves, you are welcome of course. These gifts can last longer than flowers and can be a source of comfort long into the future. Should anyone need a visit from the vicar, or a Home Communion, please contact me or Ruth Collie who is our Pastoral Worker.

Coronavirus (COVID-19) guidance for parishes

Churches should already be following best-hygiene practices that include advising parishioners with coughs and sneezes to refrain from handshaking during The Peace and to receive Communion in one kind only. At present, there is no Government advice that suggests the use of the Common Cup should be suspended. It is also best practice for churches to have hand-sanitisers available for parishioners to use. In addition, presiding at the Eucharist, communion administrators and servers should wash their hands, preferably with an alcohol- based (minimum 60%) hand-sanitiser. Intinction is not recommended (even by celebrants or communion-administrators) as this represents an infection transmission route.Best hygiene practice should continue to be observed in all pastoral contacts.

Updated advice from Public Health on Monday 17th February 2020

Whilst in places of worship there is no need to avoid other worshipers who are well. Take usual infection prevention precautions including washing your hands or using hand sanitiser (containing at least 60% alcohol) after using the toilet facilities; before eating food or snacks or if you are in close contact with someone who is unwell.

Everyone can help to reduce the spread of viruses in the following ways:

• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available. This is particularly important after taking public transport. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. • If you feel unwell, stay at home, do not attend work or school. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in a bin • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces in the home and work environment.

Stamp collecting for RNIB

Thank you so much to everyone who has supported me in collecting stamps in aid of Royal National Institute for the Blind, I have now posted off the stamps collected over Christmas and New Year to RNIB. BUT I have decided to continue collecting stamps throughout the year, so please keep saving your used postage stamps for me. The collection box will also remain in Fenny Bentley Church, the box is on the chest near the back of the Church. A few people have asked me how RNIB use the stamps, apparently quite a lot are sold to collectors, this is what they say on their website: “Fundraising from donations of stamps has been an invaluable method of fundraising for many charities over the past few decades. By working with our partner Xchange Master, the RNIB is able to accept and convert postage stamp donations into usable funds for the charity. The majority of donations are consequently sorted into countries and sold to collectors for philatelic use. A small portion is also sold on to artists who make huge canvas pictures using different coloured stamps as pixels. Many of these works can be worth a lot of money but require the use of thousands of stamps to make the picture in the first place. A tiny fraction is also sold on to foreign buyers as GB stamps are still by far the most desirable as they were the first to produce stamps.” More information can be found at: https://www.rnib.org.uk/donations-and- fundraising/fundraising-your-community/stamps-appeal Brenda Kirkham FITZHERBERT SCHOOL NEWS – MARCH 2020

The infant class are busy with their new topic on ‘Oceans and Seas’... they have started to create a paper plate map of the world - where they’ve been learning the seven continents.

We have had several visitors into school including a Police Community Support Officer from Ashbourne Police. The officer spoke about Stranger Danger and gave the children an insight into her role. The children asked lots of great questions and found out all sorts of information, including how you can become a support officer and the role of police dogs. The infants really enjoyed trying on the uniform and putting Mrs Taylor into handcuffs!

The children have also been learning all about fire safety and how to keep safe at home. KS1 practised the stop, drop and roll technique, whilst KS2 learnt about the science of fire, the fire triangle and fire hazards at home. These important lessons are paramount at helping our children stay safe.

On Friday 30th March the School will be holding an Easter Service in Fenny Bentley Church at 9 am, everyone is welcome to join us.

If you would like any more information about any of the events mentioned then please get in touch, tel 01335 350362 or more information about school can be found on our website: http://www.fitzherbert.derbyshire.sch.uk/

COFFEE MORNINGS

On Wednesday, February 19th we had our monthly Coffee Morning. Unfortunately, a few of our regular attenders were not able to be present, but we still had a very pleasant time and we were joined towards the end by a lady and her two sons who were staying at ‘The Rest’. A total of £45.00 was donated and this has been sent to the charity called ‘Chicks’ which exists in Fenny Bentley. It is the first time that we have made a donation to them but the charity certainly deserves it.

Chicks is a national charity which provides free respite breaks to children aged 8-15 from all over the UK who would really benefit from a break from their home lives. A Chicks break inspires new confidence and gives children the chance to have fun, enjoy new experiences and relax. More than anything, it gives them the chance to just be children. The children they help come from a variety of backgrounds. They might be young carers, living in poverty, victims of bullying or abuse, or have been bereaved. The one thing they all have in common is that they could really benefit from a week away from their circumstances.

Each week from February to December, a group of up to 16 children come to stay at the Daleside Retreat in Fenny Bentley. The breaks are fun and exciting, whilst also providing opportunity for rest and relaxation. The children have the chance to take part in new activities and enjoy new experiences, and they always make the most of the beautiful countryside surrounding us.

Each week is designed and led by their skilled and energetic team, and is specifically tailored to fit the needs of each group. This means that every break is unique, but each one has elements of adventure, relaxation, creativity and imagination. These elements are designed to engage the children’s interests, offering them new experiences and ways of viewing the world. Children are offered challenges within an encouraging and supportive environment, but are always given a choice. Their philosophy is that each child who goes to Chicks is given equal respect, regardless of their background or history. A letter has been received from Jane Fulham, manager of Careline, to whom we gave our donation from the January Coffee Morning. She writes to say a huge thank you to everyone for the very generous donation. They are extremely grateful that we continue to support a community project like theirs and that we recognise the need of some of their older people in the Community who often get forgotten. It means very much to them.

Future Dates: March 18th and April 15th both Wednesdays in the Village Hall at the usual time between 10.30 am and 12 noon. In March the charity to benefit from any donations will be the Air Ambulance and in April Water Aid. Please come along. You will be most welcome.

Unapproved Minutes

Minutes of Thorpe Parish Council held on Tuesday 21st January 2020 at 7.30pm in Thorpe Village Hall

Present: Councillor A. Bock (in the Chair) Councillors D. Belton, C. Garrett, L. Frith 5 Parishioners

Public Participation

Phil Lees mentioned that at the rear of the Village Green, by the wooden bridge, it was much boggier than normal – to be investigated and the County Council to be informed.

1127. Apologies

None

1128. Declaration of Members Interests

No matters raised.

1129. Minutes

The minutes of the meeting held on 3rd December 2019 were approved.

1130. Ongoing Matters

● Village website – Nothing to report.

● Closure of public toilets – No news at present regarding Thorpe’s former public toilets or the public toilets that might be closed due to vandalism and theft.

● Telephone Box refurbishment – suitable decorators for the job discussed. The £300 grant will be carried forward to 2020

● Potholes/road maintenance – Nothing to report

● Flooding of Digmire Lane/Hall Lane – Nothing to report

● Public Liability on Parish maintained land – the tree survey on the Wellingtonia tree at the bottom of Hall Lane has been undertaken and the report is awaited.

● Grounds Maintenance – C Challinor confirmed that the cost remains at £2079 (inc vat) and he will therefore continue for the forthcoming year.

● Notice Board – C Lomas mentioned that some notices are not displayed on the second board – therefore more effort to be made to display notices on both boards. A temporary repair to be made to the Village Hall notice board.

Vacant Councillor Position – Progress is being made in finding a Councillor.

● Thorpe Village Hall - The same situation from the previous meeting applies ie until we have more detail and a figure, it is not the intention to go out to a vote for the villagers’ thoughts on increasing the precept. However, the Parish Council would seriously consider giving the £1500 surplus. This can be done once costs are finalised.

1131. Finances

Cheques issued:

Thorpe Village Hall £75.00

Monies received: None

Balance sheet up to 21st January 2020: Current account - £3269 Deposit account - £1055

The current precept is £2250. In 2015 the precept was £3900 but savings were made as the Parish Council now undertakes its own Clerk and Responsible Financial Officer duties. Therefore the precept has been £2250 since 2016. However as costs are increasing and we intend to donate the surplus to the Village Hall, the proposal is to increase the precept by 3% to £2325. This was agreed by all the Councillors and will be informed.

1132. Planning Applications

None received

1133. Correspondence

All general correspondence has been circulated to the Councillors.

1134. The date of next meeting is Tuesday 5th May 2020 at 7.30pm at the Village Hall.

1135. Other Matters

The flooding of the road near to Spend Lane Farm is to be brought to the attention of the Highways Authority to establish if there is an underlying problem.

Meeting closed at 8.15pm.

WELL DRESSING 2020

**WELL DRESSING Dates 2020 - Thursday 21 May to Wednesday 27 May **

The Village Roundabout

Villagers may have noticed the big hole in the middle of the road by the Kindergarten. Debbie and Mervyn King have been monitoring progress between both Severn Trent and Derbyshire County Highways and both authorities have denied responsibility. Classic. This has been caused by water coming up from underneath the tarmac. This has gone on for months and is still not resolved. Debbie and Mervyn are hot on the heels of the two organisations and will update us all next month.

Village Clean Up Saturday March 14, 09.30am As before the Village annual Litter-Pick will take place on Saturday March 14 starting at the Tearooms at 09.30am for a long morning. Bin bags and Litter sticks are being provided by the District Council. Tea, coffee and cake at the end at Herbert’s Tearooms. Please confirm your attendance to the Office please. Call 01335 352200.

The Ford during the Floods Please be aware that the ford is not passable after all the recent flooding that we have seen in the early part of 2020. As you can see from this photograph a Mercedes stalled and got stuck in the water during the wet weather. It is NOT worth entering when the water is at such levels.

The New Notice Board at The Green Many thanks to Mervyn King who has designed and made the Notice Board at The Green. It is much better than our previous board and I am extremely grateful to the Derbyshire Dales District Council (DDDC) for their contribution through the Local Projects Scheme.
