Paralympic Winter Games Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea 9-18 March 2018 Paralympic Winter Games PyeongChang, Republic of Korea 9-18 March 2018 The PyeongChang 2018 Paralympic Winter Games will be held for 10 days from 9 to 18 March, 2018 in PyeongChang, Gangwon Province, the Republic of Korea. PyeongChang was selected as the host city of the 2018 Paralympic Winter Games after receiving a majority vote at the 123rd IOC Session held on 7 July, 2011 after three consecutive bids. The Paralympic Winter Games will be held in the Republic of Korea the first Paralympic Games in 30 years after the Seoul Paralympic Games in 1988. PyeongChang will be the stage for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and most snow sports. Alpine skiing events will take place in Jeongseon, and all ice sports will be competed in the coastal city of Gangneung. Sports Para Alpine Skiing Para Biathlon Para Cross-Country Para Ice Hockey Skiing Para Snowboard Wheelchair Curling Scotland’s wheelchair curlers Aileen Neilson (Skip), Gregor Ewan, Hugh Nibloe, Robert McPherson and Angie Malone, along with coach Sheila Swan, have qualified for the ParalympicsGB team for the PyeongChang Games following their bronze medal at the 2017 WCF World Wheelchair Curling Championships. There is also potential Scottish representation in the sports of Para Alpine Skiiing and Para Cross-Country Skiing. Sochi 2014 Round up • Five Scottish wheelchair curlers, Gregor Ewan (Elgin), Jim Gault, Aileen Neilson (Strathaven) and Bob McPherson (Bellshill) competed for ParalympicsGB team for Sochi and won Bronze medal. Rachael Ferrier (Kilmacolm, Renfrewshire) was guide to Millie Knight who competed in Alpine Skiing. 40% of the ParalympicsGB team were Scottish.     Scottish Disability Sport - The First Fifty Years Richard Brickley MBE Foreword I was delighted to be asked by Chief Executive Gavin Macleod to record the first fifty years of Scottish Disability Sport, to mark the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Association. Initially the project was intended to be small but the more I researched, the more it brought back memories of great athletes, superb volunteers and great times. I became determined to try and do justice to as many as those great people as possible. I am certain I shall have forgotten key people in the eyes of others and if so I apologise profusely. For almost four decades SDS has been for me a way of life. The volunteers I have had the pleasure of working with for almost three decades are those I remember with great fondness, particularly during the early years. I applaud the many athletes who contributed to the rich history and success of SDS over fifty years. Outstanding volunteers like Bob Mitchell, Mary Urquhart, David Thomson, Jean Stone, Chris Cohen and Colin Rains helped to develop and sustain my passion for disability sport. I have been privileged to work with exceptional professionals like Ken Hutchison, Derek Casey, Liz Dendy, Paul Bush, Bob Price, Louise Martin, Sheila Dobie, Fiona Reid, Eddie McConnell, Gavin MacLeod, Mary Alison, Heather Lowden, Lawrie Randak, Tracey McCillen, Archie Cameron and many others whose commitment to inclusive sport has been obvious and long lasting. Last year’s runners up from Dundonald Curling Club fell in the first round with last year’s winners from Galston Haymouth Curling Club faring only slightly better going out of the competition in round 2. Round 1 also saw an 8 ender from the eventual winners. By Friday the semi-finalists pitted Sorn against Fairywell and Stewarton Heather against Dalry Union. Both games could have gone either way but it was Fairywell and Stewarton Heather which won through to contest the final. The Fairywell rink was the youngest rink taking part in the competition skipped by Shaun Rennie wth George McNaughton at third, Liam Scott at two and Shaun’s sister Aileen leading.
