A. Our School 1. Mission  To foster the whole‐person education based on Christian principles; to guide students to lead an abundant life in Christ; and to carry the school tradition of perseverance, diligence, frugality, love for the school and respect for teachers.

2. History background Wa Ying College was first founded by the Methodist Church in , southern in 1913. Since then, the school had been highly acclaimed and attracted students from afar, including many from . During World War II, the whole school moved to Hong Kong and established itself at on , and later in Shatin. It moved back to Foshan after the war. It was eventually closed in 1951 as all schools had to be operated by the Chinese government. In 1962, the Wa Ying College Alumni Association of Hong Kong was formed. The alumni were keen on re‐establishing Wa Ying in Hong Kong and made a proposal to the Chinese Methodist Church in 1969. The alumni pledged to raise funds to start the building project and entrusted the school to the church as in the past. With less than 400 alumni, nearly $300,000 was raised. In addition to a loan of $250,000 and a subsidy of $2,000,00 granted by the Hong Kong Government, the dream to resume the school came true. Construction work began at its present site in 1970. In September 1971, the new Wa Ying College started with 18 teachers and 12 classes. The school gradually expanded up to 31 classes by the year 1983.

3. Facilities The school site covers an area of about 5,000 square metres. There are 25 standard classrooms, a chapel, a staff common room and 15 special rooms or laboratories for the teaching of science subjects, geography, art, music, technical subjects, computer, home economics and languages. The school hall is air‐conditioned with a seating capacity of 1,200 and below it is a covered playground. On the mezzanine, there is a Chapel for worship and other religious activities. On the ground floor, there is a student canteen, a tuck shop and a room for the Student Union. The open space outside the building contains a basketball court, two volleyball courts and a car park. Thanks to the donation of alumni, parents and students, our school hall, covered playground and classrooms are air‐conditioned and equipped with audio‐visual aids and facilities. The new school annex with a lift, a new computer room, a new Geography room, two classrooms and a staff common room was open for use in the school year of 2001. Funding from QEF enables the establishment of the Graphic Communication Laboratory, the Robotics Laboratory and the Multimedia Learning Center installed with the latest IT equipment. The covered playground and the language laboratory were renovated and installed with IT

B. Achievements and Reflections on Major Concerns Major Concern 1: Catering for learner diversity (A) For administration [I] Facilitating whole‐school curriculum planning by re‐structuring the class size and maximizing choices of electives offered in the coming senior forms, with reference to financial and human resource planning {1.1} Setting up a task force to draft the plan for senior class structures of the coming academic years [1.1.1] Review  As there would be 4 classes, instead of 5 classes in F.4 in 2014‐2015, a new choice of electives offered to F.4 should be discussed. A task force, comprising of members of Curriculum Development Committee (CDC), Head of Counselling and Guidance Committee (CGC) and Career and Further Studies Committee (CFS) (the latter two Committee Heads joined in order to cater for the needs of Special Education Needs (SEN) students , was set up in order to maximize choices of electives offered to F.4 students. The task force took students’ preference, manpower allocation and feasibility of timetabling into consideration. 4 ad hoc meetings were convened to discuss the choice of electives.  Subjects with students less than 10 would not be offered. Mathematics (Extended Parts) Module 1 and Module 2 should be blocked to F.4A and F.4B because of timetabling and examination arrangement problem. The first elective was fixed in each class with Physics, Chemistry, Geography and Economics in F.4A, F.4B, F.4C and F.4D respectively. The second elective was barred to the science students only. The choice of electives offered in the third elective was open to all F.4 students. Finally, only 38 choices of electives were offered.

[1.1.2] Suggestion for improvement ․ 2014‐2015 F.4 curriculum is only a trial and the school has to review the curriculum to see if the choices of electives can satisfy the majority of students’ preferences and cater for the learning needs of students. Also, there is a need to modify the current curriculum to see if the manpower in the staff establishment can help provide the electives in school.

[1.2] Drafting a 5‐year human resource plan [1.2.1] Review ․ A 5‐year human resource plan was drafted in which there will be some retired teachers in the coming years. Rationales should be spelt out more clearly in the resource plan. Matters concerning the New Senior Secondary curriculum should be reviewed in order to handle the 4‐class in each senior form in the forthcoming years.

[1.2.2] Suggestion for improvement ․ It is only preliminary and more concrete and detailed information, for instance, the number of classes in each elective to be offered, should be solicited. Rationales can then be spelt out to work out a clearer picture of manpower deployment and allocation in the future.

(B) For teaching and learning [1] Developing teaching packages / pedagogies to address students’ different learning needs in lessons {1.1} Developing F.1 bridging program by Language Across Curriculum (LAC) and other subjects, for

10 instance, Foundation Studies (FS) [1.1.1] Review ․ Bridging program was completed in F.1. 12 English lessons were used to develop the bridging program in History and Integrated Science with 6 lessons in each subject. Part of speech and argument writing were developed in the curriculum. Positive feedback was received and both teachers and students found the bridging program useful. History and Integrated Science were used as a trial point because many F.1 students find these two subjects difficult. In order to address students’ learning needs, the bridging program was developed to handle these two subjects. ․ The feedback by LAC teachers, English teachers and subject teachers (as lesson observers) were positive. The majority of students also agreed that the program was helpful. Also, subject teachers especially found the parts about teaching different ‘parts of speech’ and sentence structures useful and they would remind students about the language patterns in their future lessons. ․ Integrated Science teachers expressed that more assistance could be given on teaching students passive voice, understanding complex sentence structures and enhancing their reading comprehension skills. More materials would be further developed by Integrated Science and English Departments in the next school year. ․ The teaching of LAC materials were arranged in F.1 English lessons in 2013‐2014. Due to the limitation of manpower and teaching time available, the teaching materials (PowerPoint slides, worksheets and classroom activities) have to be modified and adopted by History, Integrated Science and English teachers for sustainable future use. Collaboration would continue in 2014‐2015 to develop materials for Integrated Science and History.

[1.1.2] Suggestion for improvement ․ English learning package will be saved in the school’s Share Folder. The teaching materials will be adopted in History lessons. As for Integrated Science, the language skills will be embedded in the topics. ․ It is a trial in F.1. The subject departments will discuss and see if the English Department can offer help English as medium of instruction (EMI) subjects. English Across Curriculum Support Unit will see if any support can be offered to the subjects and English Panel head will be consulted to see if English support elements can be done in F.1 English lessons.

{1.2} Co‐working with Curriculum Development Institute (CDI) to develop Geography teaching materials for F.2 classes [1.2.1] Review ․ Differentiated instructions were introduced in F.2 Geography lessons to see how much this teaching pedagogy can help cater for learner diversity. It was the second year for the Geography Department to try this teaching pedagogy and there were different views over the effectiveness of the worksheets and the application of usage in the due course. The Geography Panel Head tried the teaching pedagogy in F.2 Geography lessons but resigned in the middle of the year. Owing to the sudden change of new Geography Panel head and the substitute teacher, it was difficult to continue the program. The program will not be carried out in F.3 in 2014‐2015.

11

[1.2.2] Suggestion for improvement ․ The curriculum in F.2 should be trimmed in order to handle the issue. Consensus should be reached among the subject teachers to carry out the program. Also, coordination should be improved.

{1.3} Stretching students’ potentials through exploring different programs offered by the professional learning organizations [1.3.1] Review ․ Gifted programs were uploaded on the school webpage in order to let parents know. Students were encouraged to apply for the programs offered by the University of Hong Kong (HKU) and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Both self‐nomination and school nomination could be done in the application of the programs. The school would nominate the first three in each form from F.3‐F.6 to join the gifted programs offered by HKU. ․ There was collaboration with other subjects, units and form teachers to nominate students to join the programs offered by the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE). Finally, 7 students were accepted and the school could get the profiles of students who joined the programs and competitions offered by the HKAGE by the successful applicants.

[1.3.2] Suggestion for improvement ․ Students should be encouraged to join more gifted programs in order to widen their horizons and let them have more exposure of outside world. The school will work closely with the parents to help our students apply for those gifted programs.

(C) For student support [1] Providing multiple pathways for students with different strengths and interests {1.1} Review ․ More opportunities were offered by various Student Support and Development Board (SSDB) committees to cultivate interest and foster strengths: for example, CFS provided many new interest classes for F.1 students; Extra‐curricular Activity Committee (ECAC) offered three service programs for F.3‐F.4 and a new leadership program, with service education component, for F2 students; DC redesigned a new perfect leadership training program; special programs for SEN students were provided by CGC. These have served to enrich the existing opportunities offered by Student Union, House, SCF, clubs and ambassadors for leadership training; Peer Counsellor Scheme (PCS) programs for Big Brothers/Sisters; Life Ambassadors for passive students; gifted programs for talented students; and nomination of outstanding students by Awards, Prizes & Scholarships Unit. ․ Besides consolidating our strengths in Other Learning Experience (OLE) like sports, music, speech and debate, dramas (both in Chinese and English) have got very good results in this year and they have become one of the strengths of our school. ․ Although many students were involved in the programs mentioned above, we still have to take note if any students are not being taken care of, like those passive students or even computer addicts.

{1.2} Suggestion for improvement

12

․ Handbook for ECAC/OLE has to be compiled for students’ life planning. It can also incorporate programs offered by other units/committees so as to facilitate students’ aspiration for scholarships, external awards, principal’s recommendation and gifted programs. ․ Interest classes can be extended to F.2. ․ The development of Dance Club can be enhanced.

[1.2] Addressing the educational needs of junior students and those with learning difficulties {1.2.1} Review ․ MCE vertical and horizontal curriculum framework for F.1‐F.2 was completed. ․ Tutorial groups held by CGC in subject levels were found to be more effective. Programs for F.2 students with low motivation were run. ․ Teacher workshop, run by Educational Psychologist, on handling SEN students was held with favourable feedback.

{1.2.2} Suggestion for improvement  The MCE vertical and horizontal curriculum framework for F.3‐6 students should be completed in next academic year. It is suggested to incorporate the curriculum framework into the Life Planning Education curriculum.  Training and support for form teachers should be strengthened, and hence it is necessary to reinforce the effective mechanism of the support pyramid.

Major Concern 2: Creating sustainable Campus to address new educational needs (A) For administration [1] Sustaining the Wa Ying culture via celebration of the 100th anniversary of establishment [1.1] Review ․ An organized trip to Foshan was held in December with student leader representatives, teacher representatives, alumni and parents. The ex‐Vice‐principal who has strong link to Foshan also joined. It could help sustain Wa Ying culture and let different stakeholders to celebrate the 100th anniversary. ․ Some representatives of Foshan also came to our school’s Speech Day and knew more about what we were doing to continue Wa Ying’s spirits in Hong Kong. ․ In F.1 FS lessons, Wa Ying history was taught. ․ Interviews were also conducted by Mrs. Chiu Law Chor Wan. Hong Kong newspaper also recorded the news. Mrs. Chiu Law Chor Wan will then help compile the 100th anniversary magazine. ․ Wa Ying Folk Day was held on 10th May, 2014 (Sat.) and on the whole the alumni, parents, teachers and students enjoyed the day so much.

[1.2] Suggestion for improvement ․ On the whole, the celebrative events were successful and there could have been more detailed planning if more time was allowed. [2] Promoting a green campus by setting up the Green School Unit [2.1] Growing plants by students {2.1.1} Review ․ The school encouraged our students to grow plants in the campus. Some plants were grown

13

in the school.

{2.1.2} Suggestion for improvement ․ There is some environmental soil left. The school will continue to grow more plants to make a greener school.

[2.2] Promotion of healthy diet {2.2.1} Review ․ Design and Technology Department and Home Economics Department helped provide the healthy diet receipts to the school. According to the survey, 70% of students agreed to have the steamer to steam their self‐prepared lunch boxes. However, the steamer was sent to the school and the electrical wires linking to the steamer was not done.

{2.2.2} Suggestion for improvement ․ Owing to the retirement of the teacher‐in‐charge of Green School Unit, the follow‐up could not be done. The new teacher‐in‐charge will do the follow‐up work. ․ The school sees if the steamer will be provided to our staff for use.

[3] Facilitating the smooth migration from School Management Committee (SMC) to Incorporated Management Committee (IMC) by setting up the IMC Migratory Task Force {3.1} Review ․ IMC Migratory Task Force was set up with Mr. Chan Wai Hung as the convenor. The work was carried out smoothly and an assistant accounting clerk was employed in the school to help do the stock and inventory.

{3.2} Suggestion for improvement ․ The IMC will be set up on 30th August, 2014. Some follow‐up works, for instance, the calling of First IMC meeting, the registration of the IMC, the changing of constitutions of elections of parent managers and alumni managers in Parent Teacher Association and Alumni Association respectively, needs to be done starting from September, 2014 onwards.

(B) For teaching and learning [1] Providing a print‐rich environment by posting some famous sayings / idioms in designated areas in the campus [1.1] Review ․ Famous sayings / idioms were prepared. However, owing to the lack of boards, these works could not be posted up.

[1.2] Suggestion for improvement ․ Specific units should be assigned to follow up with the installation of noticeboards to show these famous sayings / idioms to our students. More planning should be done beforehand. [2] Conducting English‐medium assemblies on subject‐based issues / themes in order to facilitate language immersion {2.1} Review ․ As evaluated by the teachers concerned, there were not enough assemblies to be provided to

14

subject‐based issues / themes in arranging assemblies. The talks organized were good. ․ Owing to the tight schedule, there was limited number of assemblies for the subjects.

{2.2} Suggestion for improvement ․ The school will continue to uphold two times for the assembly arrangement for PSHE and Science. ․ The quality of talks used in English greatly depends on the speakers but the teachers‐in‐charge will try hard to maintain the quality of the talks. ․ Some alumni will be invited to share their profession to our students.

(C) For student support (1) Cultivating a harmonious campus with mutual respect {1.1} Review ․ The courtesy campaign co‐organized by Discipline Committee (DC), CFS & CGC was effective in raising students’ awareness of respect in campus; while Religious Education Committee (REC) and MCE placed more emphasis on inclusion of handicaps and respect for homosexuals though we do not support same‐sex marriage. ․ Attempts were made to enlist parents’ support through parent seminars and parents’ letters. ․ But there was a lack of whole‐school and planning and participation. The alignment among different programs in value education should be further improved.

{1.2} Suggestion for improvement ․ We can explore if there is a need to set up a new theme for the whole school in the next academic year. Possible topics are: learner diversity, the school major concern; life planning education for individual students, the school major concern as required by Education Bureau (EDB). It is suggested to use the theme “dream” to address the above concerns.

Major Concern 3: Facilitating professional development (A) For administration [1] Providing more opportunities to develop teachers’ professional development {1.1} Setting up a unit to review and revise the appraisal system [1.1.1] Review ․ 7 meetings were convened in 2013‐2014. 1 consultative meeting was held to solicit colleagues’ views over the appraisal system in the Staff Meeting. The revised version of the appraisal system was revised, discussed in the School Policy Committee and reviewed in the SMC. ․ Those colleagues teaching 3 subjects were appraised for at most 2 subjects.

[1.1.2] Suggestion for improvement ․ The appraisal system should be trimmed down because one appraiser may have many appraisees in his/her committee/subject. ․ The appeal system of the appraisal should be spelt out. ․ In the long run, the administrative structure should be trimmed down in order to reduce the work load of the appraisers.

15

(B) For teaching and learning [1] Learning effective teaching strategies to cater for different learner needs in school {1.1} Collaborating with CDI and School‐based support scheme team to arrange staff professional development seminars [1.1.1] Review ․ Talks and workshops were organized by the EDB and these helped colleagues to understand students’ different learning modes and learning difficulties in lessons. ․ Challenging tasks were designed to students in F.2 Geography lessons. ․ Curriculum tailoring and teaching strategies were implemented from F.1 to F.3 Foundation Studies to cater for less able students. ․ Remedial programs for the less able students had been organized in senior forms. ․ Graded exercises were provided in Mathematics and History. ․ More students were nominated to participate in various gifted programs organized by local universities and other professional educational organizations, for instance, HKAGE.

[1.1.2] Suggestion for improvement ․ Problem of learner diversity has become more and more obvious in senior forms. However, colleagues mentioned that the theory “cater for learner diversity” had only been introduced in the past years. More teaching strategies to cater for learner diversity were requested to share in subject interflows. ․ More enhancement programs should be organized to boost students’ learning capacity. ․ Graded exercises or challenging tasks should be encouraged in other subjects. ․ Since the fee of gifted programs organized by local universities was usually very expensive, some students, especially those coming from underprivileged families were unable to join. In order not to deprive them of their learning opportunities, more school fund should be reserved for subsidizing some needy students to join the gifted programs.

{1.2} Developing teachers’ skills on conducting assessment for learning [1.2.1] Review ․ Peer lesson observation served as a channel for teachers to have inter‐department or cross subject professional dialogues. Through reviewing teachers’ appraisal system, peer observation form was modified and focus questions related to major concerns were set. About 20% of teaching staff invited their peers to observe their lessons once. Teachers’ feedback was positive. They learnt how to scaffold students’ knowledge through asking questions of different levels.

[1.2.2] Suggestion for improvement ․ Peer lesson observation should be further promoted among teachers since less than 20% of the teachers were observed every year. ․ There was room for improvement in areas like rubrics assessment and conducting tier group teaching in class to motivate students to participate actively in class.

{1.3} Running workshops or seminars run by teachers or professionals [1.3.1] Review ․ An interflow was organized for analyzing School Value‐added Indexes (SVAIS) reports in 2012

16

and 2013. Most departments found the report useful as it provided information for teachers to identify the strengths or weaknesses of their teaching performance. However, some teachers mentioned that they did not know the significance of SVAIS report on the future development of a school. What’s more, they were unfamiliar in interpreting the information provided from SVAIS reports. ․ Students’ learning survey was conducted for F.1 and F.2 students. Weaknesses of students’ learning habits and methods were identified. Form teachers and subject teachers adjusted their teaching methods to address the less able students’ learning needs.

[1.3.2] Suggestion for improvement ․ An experienced educator, for instance, Principal Liu Ah Cheun to conduct a talk for introducing how to interpret SVAIS reports and use the information given by the report to improve our school’s effectiveness in teaching and learning. ․ As for conducting Student Learning Survey, it was an effective tool to help teachers to understand their students’ learning motivation and methods. The survey should be continued to use the data accurately to improve students’ learning performance and form teachers and subject panel heads are suggested to attend the workshop about interpreting the results of the survey.

(C) For student support [1] Workshops run by professionals, like Educational Psychologist {1.1} Review ․ Teacher workshop, run by Educational Psychologist, on handling SEN students was held with favourable feedback.

{1.2} Suggestion for improvement  Training and support for form teachers should be strengthened, and hence it is necessary to reinforce the effective mechanism of the support pyramid.  The support from the Educational Psychologist can be sought to help provide professional development.
