Welcome to the November edition, and thanks to Jenna Wheatman and Andrew Fleming for their contribution. I am sorry that this edition is a week later than planned but it has been a busy period for both the club and in turn myself. Once again we have arranged and hosted a very successful road race and cross country fixture, and participation in road, cross country and road races has clearly increased this year, and thus my Press Reports grow in length! We will be hosting our final fixture of the year at Langdale End next month, when hopefully we can build on a good start to the season in the East Yorkshire League. At our home fixture in the NYSD League, we fielded a full senior men’s team for the first time since the 2007/2008 season with two to spare, so we can look forward to a successful new year for our club. Fixtures Club members have participated in almost all of the races listed. I can help with further information if required. Ed.

Mini Biography

Andrew Fleming

One of this year’s new senior members, who ran the fastest half marathon of club runners at the Great North Run, He was also our first club senior on his cross debut at the NYSD League match at Whitby last month. Ed

Years as a runner;: I've always been pretty active in a wide range of sports, but I've only considered myself a runner for about three years. When I was in Cyprus with the Royal Navy, I started representing my station in the XC league. It was at a time when I was frustrated that I was putting more into my football than I was getting out of it. On the other hand, the XC team was punching way above its weight and dominated the league in every category. It was a case of success breeding success, I suppose. With such high standards expected, the only option was to drop the football and devote more time to running.

Best performance; My best performance so far has been 75:30 at the 2013 Great North Run. I was deep in marathon training at the time with lots of 10, 12, 14 mile marathon-pace tempo runs. When it came to the GNR I felt like I could run as fast as I wanted to without blowing-up.

Favorite race so far;: The New York half marathon without a shadow of doubt. It starts off at 7am with 10K inside a lively Central Park before spilling out onto 7th Avenue. Once out of the park, suddenly the crowds are gone and there is an eerie silence. The only thing to focus on is the brilliant lights of Times Square one mile down the road. The charge to Times Square seems to go by in seconds. A quick right-left, then down the Western Highway to the finish at the southern tip of Manhattan. Brilliant.

Favorite female runner; Valeria Straneo. She's an inspiration to me as she found success later on in life. Valeria was always a good club runner, with a 2:41 PB in the marathon. At the age of 34 she was diagnosed with Spherocytosis and had her spleen surgically removed. She had been anaemic for her entire running career! Suddenly running was easy. Last year she broke the Italian record with 2:23. This year she followed it up with a silver medal at the World Championships in Moscow at the age of 37.

Favorite male runner; David Rudisha. You feel that something exciting is going to happen every time he steps onto the track. His attitude is second to none. It's as if he doesn't realise how amazing he is. His 800m final at London 2012 is my favourite race of all time.

Targets/ambitions; Despite having a good year, I've missed my marathon debut twice due to injuries. I've decided to put the marathon ambitions back on the shelf for a few years and just work on being a better all-round runner. I only consider myself to be a three-year-old in terms of training age and 26.2 miles has to be respected. One day I'd like to have a great run at the Boston Marathon. Beyond that I think I'll have to stop taking running so seriously and just try to enjoy it more. When I'm there I'll be ready to coach.

New research reveals that if you really want that PR, you have to train your brain—hard!

An interesting article on this idea appears in the latest, (January 2014), edition of Runners World UK edition. It had previously been published in the USA edition, and I considered including it in our magazine. However I suggest a visit to the author’s web page, and from there you can download this and several other articles on this topic - http://www.runnersworld.com/person/alex-hutchinsonHow to Build Mental Muscle

Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction

On Saturday 26th October, I attended a Sacroiliac Joint course in Harrogate. The key elements learnt were to simplify how to assess and treat the joint, as many injury specialists find it a confusing area, including myself. The course was great. I have some new skills to put into practice and my understanding of the joint and injury is much less confusing so I would share a little of my knowledge.

A bit of history

The sacroiliac joints are intimately associated with the spine, and interest in the role of the sacroiliac joints in low back pain dates back to the era of Hipocrates, (460-377). At the beginning of the 20th century, the sacroiliac joints were considered to be the primary source of lower back pain and sciatica. When the importance of the inter vertebral disc in spinal pathology was identified, interest in the sacroiliac joint as a source of lower back pain started to wane. This is also shown in the lack of research into the area now, but there is starting to be a new interest in the sacroiliac joint as new advances in radiographic techniques has shown that not all back pain is due to the disc. This is also shown in the lack of research into the area now, but there is starting to be new interest in the sacroiliac joint as new advances in radiographic techniques has shown that not all pain is due to the disc.

Here is a diagram to show the anatomy of the sacroiliac joint and the discs of the back;

The function of the Sacroiliac Joints The entire pelvic girdle area is constructed to withstand enormous stresses of body weight and the forces created by contraction of the muscles attached. One of its main roles is stability and this is partly due to the strong ligaments and muscles surrounding it.

Are the sacroiliac joints a source of pain? Disc pain has its specific referral nerve patterns, the joints in the spine (apophyseal joints) were found to have different referral patterns from person to person. What about the sacroiliac joints? Many studies have found this hard to research but a study from Bogduk 1995 did show that 20% of lower back patients tested, had symptoms arising from the sacroiliac joints. So 1/5 patients seen with lower back pain may have a sacroiliac joint dysfunction. This shows it is definitely worth assessing it as a cause of pain.

Common referral patterns taken from Schwarzer et al 1995. Spine 20:21-7 Buttock 94% Lower back region 72% Lower extremity 50% Groin 14% Upper lower back region 6% Abdomen 2%

Movement of the Sacrum.... Does the sacroiliac joint move? Simply put and against what most surgeons say Yes but it's not much we are talking 0.5-1.6mm and 1.8-2.4 degrees but it does move. That’s great news for us as therapists, if movement is restricted then we don’t have to get much back for functionality but why then does it seem to create 20% of back pain? As I learnt from the course there are a number of soft tissues that influence the position and stability of the pelvis and any imbalance can put extra load onto the sacroiliac joints this can be referred to as reduced force closure.

Pain is associated with excessive strain of the connective tissue (muscle, tendons , ligament, fascia) of the sacroiliac joints, secondary to ligament laxity and coupled with motor control deficits. To simplify this, it is lack of core strength and stability.

This may not always be down to just muscle weakness as hormones have a great influence on this, which is why many females get lower back pain with pregnancy or during the menstrual cycle.

In a small minority of people you can also get excessive force closure and this will get worse with core strength training. The core muscles are strong enough but what the muscles need is relaxation and this can be simply done with cardiovascular training.

How do you know if you have a sacroiliac joint problem? As a therapist, there were many assessment tests and exercises to go through to evaluate the sacroiliac joint as a cause of pain. Some were very specific to the joint, others testing the structures around the sacroiliac joints. I’m not going to take you through them as if you have lower back pain you should get it assessed by a specialist anyway. Even in our small group we all found different aches and pains.

What we did find is that the functional tests gave us more information on the structures influencing the function of the pelvis. One of the most common causes of dysfunction was weakness in the glutes. A great functional strengthening exercise (see below), is using the opposite latisimus dorsi to get the glute firing. This is due to fascia connecting them.

To conclude

 Yes the sacroiliac joints can be a source of lower back pain  Yes the sacroiliac joints move, It’s just very small  The main influence on the sacroiliac joints are the soft tissues surrounding the joints  Most common cause is lack of force closure  Long term management should aim to functionally increase the stability by focusing on the specific muscle deficits. York Marathon (amended version)

Scarborough Athletic Club was well represented at the Yorkshire Marathon by eleven club members who joined 6,000 runners in a new marathon organised by the family of the late Jane Tomlinson. The event was set up by Jane Tomlinson’s ‘Run For All’ which the Leeds fundraiser’s family launched after she died of cancer in 2007.The marathon’s 26.2 mile route passed several famous landmarks in York, and went through villages in North Yorkshire and the East Riding. The race was expected to raise more than £1.3m for charities. The first Scarborough runner was ultra distance runner Richard Buckle who was running in his first ever road marathon. He was followed by Nikki Hanson who was also the first of the four club’s four women runners, and who was close to her personal best time which she achieved earlier this year at Manchester. Owen Willis who was running to raise funds for the Scarborough Ladies Football Team, made an excellent debut at the marathon distance when finishing third fastest, but has no plans to repeat the experience! Three other club members also competed in their first ever marathon. Guilia Wilkins, Jo Elwick and Johnathan Poulter all ran well and were pleased to have added the marathon distance to their athletic repertoire. There was some mixed fortune for another of the club’s ultra distance runners Nikki Carr, who was competing in her first ever road marathon. After a previous running injury flared up in the first half of the race, Nikki stayed in the race but was forced to slow down, but still achieved a most respectable finishing time. Iain Anderson achieved a personal best marathon time, even though he most sportingly stopped to assist a runner who was close to collapse in the race, and then had to dig deep to get back running afterwards. Geoff Cromack also ran a personal best time. Club Chairman Harry Forkin ran well to better his time at this year’s London Marathon. Complete Scarborough finish times. R. Buckle, 3.17. N. Bridlington Half Marathon and Fun Run Half Marathon Seven members of Scarborough athletic club competed in the Bridlington half marathon, which is a most popular local event which starts and finish are on the Promenade at Bridlington, and includes a scenic route towards Flamborough village, then Bempton and Sewerby Park. The first finisher for the club was 64 year old Pete Johnson who was 41st overall of the 639 finishers, and also the first over -60. He was followed by Neil Scruton who was 70th overall and the first over-65. Pete and Neil are now both ranked second in their age groups in the latest Yorkshire County Ranking Lists.. Phillip Markham followed well up the field in 170th in a time just outside his best achieved at Redcar earlier this year. Sue Louth achieved a personal best time for the distance as did Kerry Curtis and Sarah Coates who were both making their club debut. Craig Bridgewood made a good comeback to racing when competing in his first race for almost two years. Complete Scarborough finish times P. Johnson, 1.27.22. N. Scruton, 1.32.19. P. Markham, 1.40.57. S. Louth, 1.45.29. K. Curtis 1.53.34 C. Bridgewood, 1.59.35. S. Coates 2.00.49. Fun Run Kyle Richardson celebrated his recent 13th birthday with a most impressive runaway win in accompanying fun run, when finishing the approximately one mile course in six minutes and 13 seconds. Kyle was followed by Callum Bridgewood aged 13 who finished 14th of the 93 finishers in 8 minutes 11 seconds. Callum's 10 year old sister Ellie Bridgeman, was 23rd overall and the third girl in a splendid time of 8 minutes 35 seconds.

Sewerby Parkrun Six members of Scarborough Athletic Club competed in the latest weekly Sewerby Parkrun event. There was another impressive 1-2 finish by the Kraft family with James finishing first ahead of his father Ted who clocked a course record for an over-60 runner. James holds the record for the age 20-24 group. Graeme Adams was next home up in ninth of the 80 finishers and was the third over-40. He was followed by Neil and Dianne Roberts who were 32nd and 40th respectively. Dianne also achieved a personal best time for the event and was the first over-45 finisher and the 11th woman. Nicola Riley was the 12th woman and second over-45. Linda Hinchcliffe was the 26th woman and the 6th over-40. Complete Scarborough times. J. Kraft, 17.13. T. Kraft, 19.20, G. Adams, 23.20. N. Dresden Marathon Former Scarborough Athletic club member Edward Whittle competed in his first race for two years at the Dresden Marathon. The route consisted of a two lap scenic route which included the Dresden Royal Palace, Dresden Cathedral, the Academy of Arts, Frauenkirche and the Japanese Palace. Edward completed his comeback in four hours seven minutes, and hopes to continue racing and get back to his previous good form which included a 3 hour marathon, a full Ironman and the 56 mile Comrades Marathon.

Amsterdam Half Marathon Scarborough Athletic Club was represented at the Amsterdam Half Marathon by Liz Jones. The course consisted of a one loop through the attractive centre of Amsterdam, starting and finishing at the 80 year old Olympic Stadium. Liz finished the race close to a personal best time in 2 hours 31 minutes

Cabbage Patch 10 mile race Pete Barnard represented Scarborough Athletic Club at the famous Cabbage Patch 10 mile race, which is held at Twickenham. The race is so named after some unflattering comment about the nearby Rugby Stadium! In a large field of 1599 finishers, Pete achieved a personal best time of 75 minutes 43 seconds, when finishing up in 441st place.
