Dear Prayer Partners and supporters wo months ago, Vijay an IEM missionary informed me that his house owner and the police came to his home and demanded that Vijay and his family Tvacate the house and leave the village immediately. After a heated argument, the people left after instructing Vijay to apologize before leaving the village the next morning. Our missionaries are often confronted with such situations. A few years ago, when IEM was ready to begin a Community health programme in a strategic town in western India with a doctor, a full-fledged clinic, paramedics and community health workers, the entire plan crumbled overnight because a massive crowd had gathered and asked them to leave. We the prisoners of Christ are always eager to proclaim the Good News. However, unexpected catastrophes may strike us and the entire plan may be destroyed. We should be encouraged by the fact that the early missionaries had similar experiences. When I read Acts 5:19,20 I was encouraged.”But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors of the jail and brought them out. ‘Go stand in the temple courts,’ he said, ‘and tell the people the full message of this new life.’ “What an encouraging message to a persecuted church! We may derive the following non-negotiable principles for Gospel work from this passage: Persecution is inevitable in spite of our obedience The apostles surrendered themselves to God’s commission by investing themselves in the lives of the people. Nevertheless, more and more men and women believed in the Lord and were added to their number. As a result, people brought the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and mats. However, difficulties struck the disciples because of the jealousy of the officers and authorities. Misunderstandings are inevitable in relationships especially when a person is very zealous for God, while the other person has no clue about their call and vision. A child of God may struggle with this and may ask, “Why Lord?” The opposition does not stop there. Prisoners of Christ will be imprisoned. We will be forced into a state of immobility, disillusionment and depression. However we will not give up but obey God. The providence of God is irreplaceable against all odds Our God moves 24/7. God always acts and He is alive. Circumstances may appear gloomy and discouraging but deliverance comes from the Lord. He sends angels to rescue those who are constant in their commitment.

4 July 2011 Our God performs miraculous deeds, exceeding our imagination. What God does will bring confusion to those who do not belong to Him. The prisoners of Christ were set free with an order, “Go, stand and speak.” God proves that His promises are true. When commissioning us, Jesus said, “All authority in heaven and on earth is given to me. Therefore go.” The unchanging God has given His unchanging mandate to go and speak of Him. God is with us even in the prison cell. Proclamation is irrefutable and should continue amidst persecution “Tell the people the full message of this new life,” is the clear reason why God has delivered His people. Continual obedience on the part of Jesus’ followers is another non-negotiable expectation. No excuse will be entertained or allowed. We are freed not to enjoy ourselves but to declare the good news of the glory of God. “Lord, out there are persecutions, stoning, harassment and imprisonment. Please remove them all.” “No, my child. Go tell the people the full message of this new life amidst all circumstances.” The irrefutable principle of a prisoner of Christ is, “I must obey God rather than any human authority.” (Acts 5:29). The purposes of God are indisputable, beyond any human authority “For if their purpose or activity is of human origin, it will fail, but if it is of God, you will not be able to stop these men. You will only find yourselves fighting against God.” (Acts 5: 38,39). This was said by Gamabiel a teacher of the law who was honored by all the people and the members of the Sanhedrin. Every prisoner of Christ receives his appointment to be God’s servant directly from Jesus. “Dear brothers and sisters, I want you to understand that the gospel message I preach is not based on human reasoning. I received my message from no human source and no-one taught me. Instead, I received it through direct revelation from Jesus Christ” (Galatians 1: 11, 12). Therefore evangelism is purposed by God and no power on earth can stop the plan of God. Wise Conference: The first IEM Women’s Conference took place at OTI, from May 14- 18. omen Empowerment cannot be equated with Women’s Liberation. Sadly this is preached in some Christian circles. Women are called upon to W“fight” for their rights under the banner of empowerment! What a travesty of truth! Women who profess to be Christians are already liberated. They need to be encouraged to realize their true potential and use their God-given abilities to the maximum. In a country like India, this is the need of the hour. From the inception, IEM has always encouraged her women workers to show case their strengths for the glory of God. We have able church planters, Bible translators, literacy workers, medically qualified personnel, counselors, administrators, Bible teachers and so on. They have made and continue to make a mark for themselves in the present besides leaving a legacy for others to follow in their footsteps. I am sure you would have heard of the first IEM WISE conference at Outreach Training Institute from May 15-18, 2011. WISE stands for “Women of Insight for Service and Evangelism.” What an experience it was for IEM’s women workers to leave their families and unite with their fellow sisters in the ministry. God spoke to many. Commitments and recommitments were made, in response to the ministry of the Word. Women from mission fields, church ministries and departments forgot their responsibilities for a season and simply enjoyed themselves. The photographs speak for themselves; the reports unveil the story! We feature a report replete with photographs of what really happened. Thank you for praying and contributing towards the expenses of this conference. We live in a global village in more ways than one. One country depends on another for survival and sustenance. In the same way, missions is a global phenomenon, a faith endeavor, sustained primarily by prayer and followed up by financial support. In response to a growing desire from Indians living abroad, westerners who worked in India and returned to their native land and of course people who had a genuine interest in missionary work in India, the Mission began to extend approval for the formation of “Friends of IEM” groups in other countries. In gratitude to God, we feature the ministry of some “Friends of IEM” groups from around the world. We are workers together in God’s grand agenda for the world – to reach the unreached. The formation of new Worship Groups is the aim of the Mission. Some take years to evolve while others are formed quickly. Read about one group which took 11 months to come into being. Friends, please don’t forget to pray for us daily using the Praise and prayer Calendar. We count on you! Timothy Austin

Church Dedication: Church amidst Persecution

The inaugural worship service for the new church at Pachpoornahatti, Chitradurga was held on 12th June, 2011. It was a wonderful time of rejoicing for all the believers.

The missionaries and believers wanted to celebrate it on a grand scale, but were unable to do so because of opposition from some hostile groups. This church was built after many difficulties over land issues and many such struggles, and so it was an added reason to rejoice at its final completion.

25 July 2011 From Thailand God ‘s Work through us

e just attended the Congress on Evangelism at Thamasat University, Bangkok. Each participant solemnly expressed their willingness to Wbring at least 2 Thais to the Lord this year. Pray that God will use each one of them to have a burden and vision to reach out millions of Thais who still do not know the Living God. Praise God that 12 young people openly confessed their faith in the Lord April 17 at Phayao camp. We had a very good Children’s camp with students’ missions team from Asian Theological Seminary, Manila. God provides Bibles for each of the kids. Pray that these kids will grow in the Lord and for God’s protection from the evil one as most of them are facing persecution from their families and their loved ones. We had very fruitful trip to India, teaching at North East Centre for Training And Research (NECTAR-India), Shillong where missionary candidates underwent a 4- month intensive orientation course before they proceed to the fields. There were 20 men and women who are enthusiastic and ready to go to mission fields. Ching attended the First Women’s Conference of Indian Evangelical Mission from May 14-19 at Outreach Training Institute near Bangalore. Thank you so much for your love and prayers. Let’s continue to pray that millions of Thais will come to know the Living God that they can be shining lights for Jesus to the surrounding nations.

Thang & Ching Ngaihte Overseas Missionary Fellowship, Thailand Continued from previous page A word from Peter & Margaret Snell “Our interest in IEM is long standing. When we were in Manali, IEM missionaries PS Thomas and TV Thomas worked with us for many years in the hospital and on long treks to the villages. They were wonderful evangelists. We had to return to UK for the children’s education, but after retirement we were invited back to teach for brief spells at OTI and to visit some villages. We still have contact with Ebe Rajakumar, and Naresh Lal, both of whom we taught at OTI. So IEM is much on our hearts. Peter & Margaret Snell

In a recent visit to the UAE, our Church Ministries missionary, Rev. A Dayavaran was overwhelmed by the keen desire of churches, prayer groups and families to intercede for the work of IEM. During his 17-day stay there, he ministered at 11 meetings ranging from all-night prayers to church meetings and family fellowships. Rev. Dayavaran, who worked as a lab technician in the UAE for a number of years left his lucrative opportunity and returned to India along with his wife to serve in India. Reflecting on the changes in the UAE since he left, one can literally hear the thrill in Rev. Dayavaran’s voice. “Three missionaries were sent by the church since I left!” Among the many supporters doing their bit to create an awareness, Rev. Dayavaran takes note of brother Ashok Charles’s contribution. Continue on next page 27 July 2011 24th AP State Women Missionaries’ Prayer Conference - 2011 Ongole

lory to God! Because you prayed, God ministered to the few women who attended the conference. Rev John Mark worked hard, travelling from GSecunderabad to Ongole. Later, Mr. Augustine Mark joined him to help in the convention. The Steering Committee also did a wonderful job in arranging the accommodation, meeting venue, choir and other physical arrangements. Join me in praising God for Though the number of delegates were few, I believe we got the right persons. There was a tremendous response during the altar call. God has used the speakers mightily. Many have decided to pray, support and open their homes for missionary work. I observed a long queue of youngsters who waited patiently to be counseled by Dr. Theodore Srinivasagam on the final day. Many Christian families from Ongole welcomed our missionaries, delegates and speakers to stay in their homes. The church committee extended their heartfelt cooperation in sparing the meeting hall and other avenues that are available in the premises. His protection from the severe heat. Would you kindly pray That more young Area Secretaries who have a burden for the lost souls will join us. More supporters and prayer partners will stand with us and start prayer cells, inviting two or three families to pray for missionary work. We may get good result after the follow-up. Please pray for Mrs & Mr. Augustine Mark family as they are going to minister there in the days to come. Thank you for sending Dr. Theodore Srinivasagam. He has been a great blessing through the ministry of the Word of God. Yours in His Service, Gideon Vijay Kumar State Secretary, Andhra Pradesh

He Invested Beyond His Time Mr. C.A. Cornelius, a longstanding and ardent supporter of IEM went to be with his precious Saviour, our Lord Jesus Christ on June 21, 2011 in the home of his son John Cornelius in Bangalore. He was 97. Mr. C.A. Cornelius, though involved in secular work had a heart for missions. He used to enquiry regularly about our ministry, pray consistently and as the Lord led supported the ministry financially as well. In 2005, he requested the Mission to begin an endowment fund so that even after his time, his investment would continue to provide for the ministry. He contributed a sizable amount to this fund. Leading by example, “Uncle Cornelius” left a legacy even in his secular work. In his final assignment as Chairman and Managing Director of Indian Telephone Industries (ITI) he created an impression which even today is remembered by his contemporaries. The Indian Evangelical Mission family, led by our General Secretary, Rev. P. John Wesley convey our deepest condolences to his family – four daughters and two sons, one of whom – John Cornelius works in our head office.

30 July 2011 Overpowering Peer Pressure

ts back to school and college after a well earned holiday! What’s going to happen now? Are you scared? Do you have fears, questions, anxieties and Idoubts? If you are a Christian, you may have a different kind of challenge to face! All young people face this- from Old Testament folks to you – Peer Pressure! In other words, “What will my friends think? This is NOT a new problem; it is an important one. All of us want people to like us, and Satan plays havoc by using this desire. In this way the old devil gets them to think more about what people think than about what God says in His Word. Daniel faced serious problems when he was chosen to be one of the king’s special young men. In this position he could eat the rich food that the king ate and drink the same top class wine, the king drank BUT in his heart Daniel knew that these were wrong for a child of God. He also knew that the king and his assistant would never understand his feelings. Should he go along with his peers so they wouldn’t laugh at him or think him strange? Or should he obey the Lord by keeping his body strong and healthy and his mind clear and active for God’s use? Daniel 1:8 tells of the young man’s decision and what happened then. Christians need to carefully consider God’s will and leading more than what the crowd may think. They might tell you to smoke. They might say, “Come on yaar, a drink or 2 won’t hurt you. ‘Dancing with the opposite sex is not wrong.’ The unsaved person might say that sex before marriage is the in thing. Should you obey them? Will you go for it? You can’t run away from peer pressure. It’s been around for years and it is here to stay. How should you respond to it? Six Tips to Victory • When your heart says there is something questionable about the thing ‘they’ want you to do, remember that you are the temple of the Holy Spirit. (I Corinthians 3:16). • Remember God bought you with a price. (I Corinthians 6:20) since you are His you have to consult Him about everything – body soul and spirit. 31 July 2011 • Remember God has a plan in taking you to the college you have just joined. He wants you to be a witness that you are a child of God. • In the light of eternity, it really does not matter what your peers think. It is much more important to honor God in your life. • Ask some questions: What will Jesus do if He is in my place? Will Jesus be happy if I do this or go with this friend? Will God be glorified through my actions? • Will it help you grow spiritually and please Jesus? May the Lord give you courage to live for Him as you begin a new year! Jenny Christopher, Secretary for Youth Ministries Community Lay-leaders Health Training Certificate(CLHTC) The objective of the course is to equip Christian workers serving in rural India with basic primary healthcare knowledge and skills so that they could extend holistic care to the community they serve and to their own families. I praise God that CMC, Vellore has launched a Community Lay –Leaders Health Training Certificate course for missionaries/Christian workers based in remote parts of our country. The first contact programme for all those enrolled for the course was held at RUHSA near Vellore from May 23- June 11, 2011. Five of our field missionaries attended this session along with 9 others from other Missions. The topics covered in the session were Health and sickness, promotion, prevention and principles of communication, belief and cultural practices, using medicines, making puppets and flash cards. The focus is to offer preventive and curative care to the communities they have dedicated themselves to serve. All the participants enjoyed learning many lessons on health and sickness and it was a blessing to all. We plan to send at least two missionaries from each field for the CLHTC course to equip them in primary healthcare knowledge and skills and thus give holistic care to the communities. Amiyanand Nag Secretary for Community Health and Development
