“Formed in Tradition. Trained in Compassion. Prepared to Shepherd.” Our Lady of the Wayside3 Arlington Heights, Illinois

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM FR. ARTHUR MARAT I am excited to announce that we have hired a new Operations Director for Our Lady of the Wayside parish, Mrs. Ewelina Sokolowski. Mrs. Sokolowski has more than 10 years professional experience in management and finance at three different parishes within the Archdiocese of Chicago. She will collaborate with Our Lady of the Wayside School Principal David Wood, the Director of Vicariate Operations, Deacon Dennis Robak, and me to manage the financial and physical resources of our parish so that we can continue to thrive as a parish community. Welcome to our parish community and team, Mrs. Sokolowski!

OPERATIONS DIRECTOR - EWELINA SOKOLOWSKI I am very excited to join Our Lady of the Wayside community as the parish’s Operations Director and continue my work serving the Archdiocese of Chicago. I am filled with gratitude that things have fall- en into place and God has brought me to this parish as I close one of my life and begin the next. Given the current situation with Covid-19, I had many worries and concerns at the beginning of this year. However, God has taught me more than ever to let go and put my trust in Him and let His plan unfold in my life. My finance career began with a part-time job during high school when I worked as the bookkeeper for a small translation company. In this position, I was responsible for accounts payable and receivable as well as payroll and bank reconciliations. During my first year in college at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, I began to work part-time at St. James as a business manager. After graduating from college, I continued my job at St. James while al- so working for a video production company and then starting my own photography business. After my husband and I married and were blessed with our first son Ariel, I decided to sim- plify my career by putting my part-time photography business aside and working for the Archdiocese of Chicago full time as the Operations Director at St. James and St. Ferdinand Parish Church and School. Over the past 10 years, I have worked at three parishes in Vicariate IV and V. My experience at each of these parishes challenged me both personally and professionally and providentially led me to Our Lady of the Wayside. This past year, my husband and I welcomed our second son, Adrian, into the family. Our boys are 6 months and 2 years old, they are the joys of our life, and we are very excited to begin this new chapter in our lives as members of the Our Lady of the Wayside parish community! I look forward to meeting the members of Our Lady of the Wayside parish and school com- munities and serving you by assisting Fr. Arthur Marat; the Principal of Our Lady of the Wayside Parish School, David Wood; and the Director of Vicariate Operations, Deacon Dennis Robak, with the parish’s financial and operational endeavors. God Bless, Ewelina Sokolowski 4 25TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME - YEAR A Often times, my brothers and sisters, we are like the Israelites in today’s first reading; we see everything exclusively from a human perspective. We think of God and what happens in our lives only in a human way. We do not see how God loves each one of us infinitely and ar- ranges everything in our lives in order to bring us closer to Him. Through the prophet Isaiah, God tells us: “As high as the heavens are above the earth, so high are my ways above Father Arthur Marat your ways, and my thoughts above your thoughts.” Today’s Gospel about the landowner and his workers con- firms this passage. Because those who worked longer hours looked at their lives and the landowner from only a human point of view, they were resentful that they had worked a longer day and ungrateful for what they had received. They were like the Prodigal Son’s older brother who was angry that his brother was given a goat and thrown a party. Both the jealous workers and the older brother did not see that they had received additional privilege to be and live in the Father’s pres- ence for a longer amount of time. So often we look at our relationship with God not as a relationship, but as a trans- action: If I avoid sin, then God will make my life easy. If I do many things for God, then I will go to heaven. But this misses the point: life is not about meriting God’s grace or just avoiding sin. Life is about having a relationship with God and growing in a deeper knowledge of His Love. If the workers had looked at every- thing through the eyes of faith, then they would have discovered that God’s heart is unimaginably generous and full of love. God loves the sinner as much as the saint, and He is ready to pour out His love in whatever way necessary in order to begin and remain in a relationship with us. If our end goal in life is not a deep relationship with God, then we miss the point of being Catholic altogether. We do not understand or see how, regardless of how long or in what ways we work in God’s vineyard the Church, God has us here most of all because He wants a relationship with us. Everything else is secondary.

WELCOME BISHOP ELECT JEFFERY GROB Last week Francis appointed three new Auxiliary for the Archdio- cese of Chicago. One of these men, Fr. Jeffery Grob, will serve as the Episcopal Vicar of our Vicariate. I had the privilege to work under Bishop-Elect Grob when serving full-time at the Archdiocese’s Marriage Tribunal. He is a faithful and wise man and will be a good shepherd as our bishop. I would like to invite you to join me in welcoming and praying for Bishop Elect Grob, asking God to guide him as he takes on this new and important role in his life as God’s servant. 5 OLW CFM MEMBERS ENJOY WARM (AND DRY) AUTUMN WEATHER OLW’s Christian Family Movement (CFM) program, which includes about 90 parishioners this year (50 different couples and/or singles) takes advantage of the warm autumn evening weather (for awhile) for their monthly meetings. When the weather changes, meetings are held in OLW meeting rooms. Two of the groups were captured by a roving photographer during their meetings on the ground of OLW Friday, September 11. At least one other meeting was in progress. Four other groups meet electronically, using Zoom.

CFM’s next meetings are scheduled for Friday, October 2, and new members are always welcome. Further information is available from John and Kathy Loy, CFM chair people, at [email protected].

AT LONG LAST!! FIRST COMMUNION CELEBRATIONS ARE UNDERWAY! More than five months later than originally planned, some of Our Lady of the Wayside’s freshest faces advance a major step in their development as Catholics when they received the Holy Eucharist for the first time in their lives on Friday, September 11. First Communions had been scheduled for last Winter and Spring but the arrival of the Co- rona Virus and the shut-down and restrictions on activities at in OLW facilities, including the Church, forced major changes in the calendar. Confirmations and First Communions were re-scheduled until late Summer and early Autumn and attendance at all sacramental events was limited to a smaller group of students and limited family participation. As a result, instead of one Confirmation ceremony, there were five ceremonies, scheduled on four consecutive Fridays in July and August. Similarly, the sacrament of Holy Communion has be scheduled for four consecutive Fridays, which began Friday, September 4. Attendance is limited but, if the first of the First Communion ceremonies was any indica- tion, the First Communicants were nervous - but thrilled to be receiving the Body of Christ for the first time ever. 6 7

Saturday, September 26, 2020 If I work for two, I expect to get paid for two. What if we 5:00 pm Wally Schrage, Frank Griefenstein, Richard Shields, worked for a company that paid everyone the same amount Tim Hurley, Jr., Silvana Sette regardless of how long they worked? How would we feel (Public and live streamed Mass) going home with the same pay for working eight hours as Sunday, September 27, 2020 my co-worker did for working only two hours? Secular 9:30 am Anna & Orlando Matrangeli - Public Mass wisdom would have a huge problem with this and a visit to 11:30 am Jim Doherty - Public Mass the Labor Board would quickly pursue. But this is God’s wisdom and God’s ways. 6:00 pm For the Deceased Members of OLW - Public Mass We sometimes think that if we pray more, better, or more fervently and go over and above with the practice of our Readings for the week of September 20, 2020 faith, God will somehow reward us and present us with Sunday: Is 55:6-9/Ps 145:2-3, 8-9, 17-18 [18a]/Phil 1:20c- some kind of merit badge. We are so wrong. Spiritual 24, 27a/Mt 20:1-16a practices have only one true purpose: to deepen our love Monday: Eph 4:1-7, 11-13/Ps 19:2-3, 4-5 [5]/Mt 9:9-13 for God. In deepening our love for God, we also increase Tuesday: Prv 21:1-6, 10-13/Ps 119:1, 27, 30, 34. 35, 44 [35]/ our ability to see God’s presence around us, living life Lk 8:19-21 more purposefully and contemplatively. What if God Wednesday: Prv 30:5-9/Ps 119:29, 72, 89, 101, 104, 163 [105]/ chooses to treat someone who has come on the scene of Lk 9:1-6 faith later in life the same as someone who has devoted Thursday: Eccl 1:2-11/Ps 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14 and 17bc [1]/ their whole lives to it? Does it really matter? If we have Lk 9:7-9 the merit badge notion of faith, we can find ourselves feel- Friday: Eccl 3:1-11/Ps 144:1b and 2abc, 3-4 [1]/Lk 9:18- ing a little arrogant and even jealous of folks who have not 22 followed the same path that we have. We can even see our- Saturday: Eccl 11:9—12:8/Ps 90:3-4, 5-6, 12-13, 14 and 17 selves as the privileged few who have a corner on the faith [1]/Lk 9:43b-45 and fully possess it. Next Sunday: Ez 18:25-28/Ps 25:4-5, 6-7, 8-9 [6a]/Phil 2:1-11 or 2:1-5/Mt 21:28-32 That thinking doesn’t square with God. God is all about mercy in abundance and is ready to take anyone to himself regardless of when they come. He is only happy that they have come home and delights in their return. After all, if PRAY FOR THE SICK you really and truly love someone, does it matter what they Carol Blatnick Fr. John Topper will give you in return or what you receive as a benefit? If relationships were assessed based upon productivity, they Marie DeSanto Audra Tucker would lack authentic love. We invest too much self interest in our prayer and neglect to see it as an opportunity to pur- sue our Lover and deepen the intimate bond we have with God. When we breathe our last, all that is of consequence is un- ion with God. If my love for God is real, I am going to want to live the Gospel, abide by the commandments, In Loving Memory practice my faith, forgive and love my neighbor, and care for the environment, regardless of how much time it takes PRAY FOR THE DECEASED or benefits me. We want God to think and behave as we For the Deceased Members do, and in doing so, we set ourselves up for disappoint- ment. God has a totally different agenda and that’s okay. of Our Lady of the Wayside 11 12
