On behalf of everyone connected with Whitley Bay football club. I would like to extend a warm welcome to the officials, players and supporters of Dunstable Town football club. I would also like to welcome the neutral supporters to Hillheads, I am sure you will see a great game of football and hopefully see you back at Hillheads in the future. Whitley Bay’s FA Vase record over the last three seasons has been remarkable. Three semi-finals, two winning appearances at Wembley in 2009 and 2010 to add to our first win at Villa Park in 2002. The first club to win back to back finals at the new Wembley; Paul Chow scoring the fastest goal at the new or old Wembley in 21 seconds; a 6-1 victory, the highest score in a Vase final; Only the second club along with Billericay to have won the FA Vase three times. We have now also equalled another record for the greatest number of consecutive games unbeaten in the FA Vase, twenty one in total. Let’s hope we can break that record today. With the prospect of promotion this may well be our last season in the FA Vase. Whatever the football future holds for Whitley Bay. I am sure all Whitley Bay fans will have many happy memories of our good times in the FA Vase competition. I must also mention the fantastic run of form shown by Whitley Bay reserves under the guidance of Mark Nash. They are second in the first division of the Northern Alliance with two games in hand and have not lost in the league this season so far. On Saturday past they reached the quarter finals of the minor cup. Our Women’s football team are also continuing thier fantastic progress after two promotions in three years and their County Cup Final win over Newcastle United last year. They are currently lying fourth in the league with games in hand on the teams above them. They also reached the second round of the Women’s FA Cup. The reserve team are unbeaten and top of their league with games in hand. I am also extremely pleased with the progress that Gavin Fell and his team coaches are making with our mini soccer and junior sections. A number of our mini soccer players are attending the Newcastle and Sunderland training academies. Gavin gets great support from the coaches of each team and the academy committee. Many of our teams are in challenging positions for honours this season. With 27 football teams at many different age groups Whitley Bay football club is making great progress in all areas of the football community. Finally I would like to thank the club sponsors, vice presidents and the Whitley Bay fans for their continual support for the club. Particular thanks should go to Dave Styles for his tremendous work on the pitch and to all the backroom staff and my fellow directors at the club without whose tireless efforts this match would not be possible. • Theory of the Beautiful Game: the Unification of European Football
Scottish Journal of Political Economy, Vol. 54, No. 3, July 2007 r 2007 The Author Journal compilation r 2007 Scottish Economic Society. Published by Blackwell Publishing Ltd, 9600 Garsington Road, Oxford, OX4 2DQ, UK and 350 Main St, Malden, MA, 02148, USA THEORY OF THE BEAUTIFUL GAME: THE UNIFICATION OF EUROPEAN FOOTBALL John Vroomann Abstract European football is in a spiral of intra-league and inter-league polarization of talent and wealth. The invariance proposition is revisited with adaptations for win- maximizing sportsman owners facing an uncertain Champions League prize. Sportsman and champion effects have driven European football clubs to the edge of insolvency and polarized competition throughout Europe. Revenue revolutions and financial crises of the Big Five leagues are examined and estimates of competitive balance are compared. The European Super League completes the open-market solution after Bosman. A 30-team Super League is proposed based on the National Football League. In football everything is complicated by the presence of the opposite team. FSartre I Introduction The beauty of the world’s game of football lies in the dynamic balance of symbiotic competition. Since the English Premier League (EPL) broke away from the Football League in 1992, the EPL has effectively lost its competitive balance. The rebellion of the EPL coincided with a deeper media revolution as digital and pay-per-view technologies were delivered by satellite platform into the commercial television vacuum created by public television monopolies throughout Europe. EPL broadcast revenues have exploded 40-fold from h22 million in 1992 to h862 million in 2005 (33% CAGR).

Matches – 23 January 2010 – Tottenham H 2 Leeds United 2 FA Cup fourth round – White Hart Lane – 35,750 Scorers: Beckford 2 (52 mins, 90 mins pen) Tottenham Hotspur: Gomes, Hutton, Dawson, Bassong, Bale, Rose (Palacios 57), Kranjcar (Keane 71), Modric, Jenas, Defoe, Crouch (Pavlyuchenko 71) Leeds United: Ankergren, Crowe, Bromby, Kisnorbo, Hughes, Howson, Doyle (Becchio 81), Kilkenny, Johnson (White 88), Snodgrass, Beckford In January 2010 the glory, glory days were back in an emphatic way for Leeds United: no sooner had the League One leaders pulled off an extraordinary FA Cup third round victory against Manchester United at Old Trafford, than they learned that they had been paired with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane in the competition‟s next stage. Tottenham had been one of the main beneficiaries of Leeds United‟s financial collapse of the previous decade, signing a number of former Elland Roaders during the fire sales that had been necessary to ensure the club‟s survival: Paul Robinson, Robbie Keane, Aaron Lennon and teenage starlet Danny Rose. Jonathan Woodgate had also arrived in North London after stays in Newcastle, Madrid and Middlesbrough. The pairing of the two clubs brought memories and inevitable thoughts of „what might have been‟ for United fans, and Leeds manager Simon Grayson acknowledged as much in the days leading up to the clash. “I think, regardless of what‟s in the opposition squad, there‟s a sadness of what‟s happened to the club and the decline... Not so long ago this club was in Europe and they were in the top six and wanting to improve to get to where they were 30 years ago under the likes of Don Revie, Billy Leeds manager Simon Grayson during the intense Cup-tie Bremner and Johnny Giles.

  • My Autobiography
F SOLID GOLD MY AUTOBIOGRAPHY The Ultimate Rags to Riches Tale Forward by Robin Pilley David Gold, Chairman of Ann Summers, Gold Group International and West Ham United, is a man who has risen from humble and poverty stricken beginnings and achieved a status in life beyond what even he could have ever envisaged. Born an East End Jewish cockney lad, he was at the very bottom of life’s social strata. After a childhood characterised by war, poverty and disease he set out to change his life, and in the process he also changed the lives of everyone close to him. He understands and embraces the importance of change. He also changed the fortunes of his beloved football club, developed an iconic brand in Ann Summers and was influential in liberating the sexual behavior of the great British public. Now, Gold brings his unparalleled ability for change to his inspirational autobiography. This completely reworked edition, ‘The Ultimate Rags to Riches Tale’, focuses more on his personality, his remarkable business achievements, his life- affirming story and his reflections and recollections on a world that changed beyond recognition within his own lifetime. And most importantly, he speaks candidly about how he softened the British stiff upper lip and almost single-handedly brought sex onto the UK’s high streets and changed our sex lives for the better. No one has done more to prove that dreams can come true and now you can read his exceptional autobiography exclusively written to show just 2 what one man can achieve from the most humble beginnings.
