Coacb Haskins: In his sixth season at the helm, Head Coach Clem lWkins has been the chief architect behind the resurgence of the Golden Gopher basketball program. After two rebuilding seasons, he directed the program to national prominence with back-to back storybook runs through the NCAA Tournament in 1989 (Sweet Sixteen) and 1990 (Elite Eight). Known u "Clem the Gem," he wu a consensus All-America choice, and is still recognized u one of the most dominant players to ever play in the Ohio Valley C~ncc. after clwting a standout collegiate caMel' at Western Kentuclcy. The third player selected in the NBA draft. he went on 10 play nine outstanding seasons in the professional ranks. Coach Haskins has recorded an 88-86 overall record at Minnesota, including a 69-49 mart over the put four seasons. He has a 189-159 overall record in 12 seasons. Tbe Scoutiag Report: Purdue scored a 61-51 victory over Wisconsin at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette on Saturday to raise its recool to 14-13 overall and 6-9 in the Big Ten. The Boilermakers will be idle until Saturday's game against the Golden Gophers. Wisconsin fell to 13-14 overall and 4-10 in the Big Ten with the defeat. Recognized u one of the finest young players in the Big Ten, Tracy Webster will lead the Badgm into Williams Arena on Wednesday. The 5-11 sophomore guard leads the ream both in scoring (18.0) and in assists (5.3). He is shooting a blistering 50.8 percent (62 of 122) from three-point range. In his lOth season at Wisconsin, Head Coach Steve Yoder has announced his resignation effective at the end of the season. The third winningest coacb (128-161) in Wisconsin baslcetball history, he has directed the Badgers into the NIT twice in the past three yean. Like We~. Purdue's Woody Austin is a sharpshooter from the outside. The 6-2 guard is averaging 17.5 points, 4.4 rebounds and 2.6 assists a game, while shooting a sparkling 50 percent (32 of 64) from three-point range in league play. In his 121h season at Purdue, Head Coach Gene Keady has registered an impressive 246-118 record going into Saturday's game apinst the GoldeD Gophers. Priar to taking the job at Purdue, he wu the head coach at Western Kcntuclcy for two seasons,leadinglhe Hilltoppers to the Ohio Valley Conference co-championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament in his fmal season in 1979-80. Clem Ha*ins was an assistant coach on those squads at his alma mater, befa-e ralcing over the reins of the program when Keady departed few Purdue. A Look Back: The Golden Gophers battled back from a 44-34 defiCit with 5:51 remaining to score a 49-48 victory over Wisconsin baclc on Jan. 15 at the Wisconsin Fieldhouse. Junior Daaa Jackson (Cbicago) rebounded a missed shot and kissed the game winner off the glass with 4.2 seconds left on the clock. Voshon Lenard led the Golden Gophers with 12 points. After being held scoreless through the fii'St 33:18 of the contest, he caught rue and hit four big tluee-poinrers down the stretch ro fuel the comeback. In fact, the Golden Gophers have won 20 of the put 21 meetings with the Badgers at Williams Arena dating back to 1971. The lone Wisconsin victory during that stretch wu a 70-64 win in 1986. The Golden Gophers have won three straight over Purdue in Williams Arena, but the Boilermakers still have a 73-63 edge in the all-time series going into Saturday's game. Williams Arena: Tbe 79-64 loss at home to Iowa marked the f1tst time this season that the Golden Gophers have come up on the short end of a Big Tea game at Williams Arena. The Golden Gophers are now 10-2 overall and 5-1 in the Big Ten in home games this season. The Golden Gophers have registeled an impressive 46-13 record (.780) over the put four seasons within the hallowed halls of the fabled arena.
