One Minute Interview: Martin Covington, Head of Truck Tyre Marketing at Michelin 18 May 2010 in Commercial Motor magazine

The CV Operator Show will be the first time in two years that the whole transport industry has come together to showcase the latest innovations in vehicle technology. But it will also be a great networking event, giving operators chance to meet up with suppliers old and new.

To introduce some of the key people who will be running stands at the show, we are asking them to take part in an informal One Minute Interview. Martin Covington, UK Head of Marketing - Truck Michelin

"What are you most looking forward to seeing at the 2010 Commercial Vehicle Operator Show? - Visitors!

"What do you think visitors are going to be looking for at the 2010 Commercial Vehicle Operator Show? - Innovative new products which can ultimately save them money."

"Why do think it is important to have a presence at the 2010 Commercial Vehicle Operator Show? - Michelin has supported the original CV Show for many years and we have always seen it as an important way of meeting both existing and potential new customers in neutral surroundings. It provides a perfect environment for relaxed informal discussions."

"What do you hope to gain from the 2010 Commercial Vehicle Operator Show? - Plenty of visitors to our stand and, of course, new business opportunities!"

"What’s your biggest gripe about the road transport industry at the moment? - Despite continuously increasing costs, we still find many hauliers are not following basic tyre husbandry principles, such as running tyres at the recommended pressures. Simple adherence to this could save the industry hundreds of thousands of pounds, not to mention reduce the overall carbon footprint."

"What single piece of legislation would make your life easier and help your company work? - Anything that took the pressure off hauliers to constantly have to seek ways to cut costs – such as paying reduced fuel duty."

"What do you think has been the most important development in road transport in the last five years? - Improved fuel efficiency and reduced carbon emissions from the latest generation of Euro-4, Euro-5 and EEV trucks."

"How did you get into the industry? - I was recruited by Michelin in 1979. I’d previously trained as a cost and management accountant."

"Who do you admire in the road transport industry? - The resilience of the many fleet operators which have survived the various financial difficulties heaped on the haulage industry in recent years."

"How do you see the industry in the next five years? - Surviving, but leaner and meaner!"

"If you could have a 60-minute chat with anyone (dead or alive), who would it be? - Ian Botham or Alice Cooper or better still, both together."

"What motivates you? - Winning new business and retaining current customers, plus developing career opportunities for members of my team."

"What has been your most rewarding professional achievement to date? - Entering and winning the 2009 Motor Transport Innovation Award with the new Michelin X One MaxiTrailer tyre."

"Pundits say the road transport industry delivers the economy. Do you agree, and why? - Yes, most certainly. Trucks keep Britain rolling, and without them, the UK certainly couldn’t deliver efficiently or effectively."

"Can you imagine a world without vans, trucks and trailers? - No! Or at least, it will certainly not happen in my lifetime!" See www.covingtonhistory.co.uk/betterplace.htm for more detailed expose of my early life.(Last updated: 12/06/2018 15:46:03) Martin Herbert Covington 1 and Ian Martin Covington 2321 - 1991 Wycombe.jpg

He continued to be a prolific story teller about his experiences in the war. I should have tried to write his biography, which I'm sure would have been a best-seller.

Occupation Jan 1933 - Jan 1938, Daimler Motor Co, Coventry, Clerk, starting on 8s 9d per week. When he first started work, at 14, he did not even have a pair of long trousers. His mother bought a pair during his first week from Lines of Coventry for 1s 6d. Previous clothes, along with his brother Ernest, had been made by his mother out of cast offs from his older brothers.

Before war broke out he had moved to the General Electric Company, Jan 1938 - Oct 1939, G.E.C., Coventry, After the war he returned to the GEC, which is where he eventually met his wife to be, Dorothy. He worked as a Clerical Jan 1946 - Jun 1950, G.E.C., Coventry, Clerical. Jul 1950 - Dec 1983, Daimler Motor Co.& Jaguar Cars, Technical Specifications in Body Drawing Offices. Retired 8th December 1983, aged 65.

When first married initially lived with his parents at 138 Radford Rd, Coventry before lodging with his brother Sydney & his wife, Irene. Bought first house at 319 Burnaby Road in 1951 where they lived until 1978. Final address was 41 Smarts Road, Bedworth, Nuneaton which was where he passed away peacefully in 2003..

Although my father spent the whole of World War 2 serving his country, he was very much a man of peace, who would always seek the quiet life rather than deal with confrontation.

A keen exponent of DIY, the cars that he owned his pride and joy. He kept them immaculate inside and out. As a boy he kept birds in the family aviary but in later life had very few hobbies. He liked a good Cowboy film and enjoyed a couple of beers on a Friday evening & Sunday lunch, usually a pint of mixed (bitter 7 mild, preferably Ansells). GENERATION 4 ERNEST ALBERT COVINGTON. Ref: 294. Born: 19 Feb 1883 at Canning Town, Essex. Father: Covington, Charles James, Father Ref: 1013. Mother: Reynolds, Elizabeth, Mother Ref: 4390. Mar: 24 Apr 1905 at Rothwell, Northants to Wells, Lilian 4422. Died: 12 Aug 1974 at Coventry aged 91. Grandfather of the author of this publication. Born as Ernest Albert Reynolds on 19 February 1883 at the Royal Artillery Barracks, Bow, London, within the sounds of Bow Bells. But later adopted to become a Covington by Charles James following his marriage to Elizabeth. Christened: 23 May 1886 at Canterbury Barracks, Garrison Chapel, ceremony performed by George Mead, Chaplain. Born Height 5ft 5ins. Married at the Parish Church, Rothwell, Northants.

He left school aged 9, in 1892, and served his apprenticeship as a wheel-maker at Ball's Foundry, Rothwell, Northants. He supposedly also worked for an early period of his life for Lord Lonsdale (of boxing's Lonsdale belt fame) in the Stamford, Lincs area, repairing farm gates, horse drawn vehicles, carriages etc.

Appears in 1901 Census employed as a Wheelwright aged 18 living in Rothwell. After marriage worked as a coachbuilder for Mulliners of Northampton. Started work at Daimler Motors, Coventry in 1907 as a coach-builder, despite still living in Northampton. He cycled the 54 miles each way, 6 days a week, 51 weeks of the year for 7 years until he finally moved house to Coventry & never missed a days work. Not content with cycling over 600 miles a week, on a Friday night he would ride home via Nuneaton (not on the direct route to Northampton) and race 20 laps with friends on the local cycle track, before cycling home.

Some time between 1907 and start of 1st World War visited Duke of Bedford's home and King George V at Buckingham Palace to work on Royal Coaches and the 1st Royal Daimler cars. Involved in war work 1914-18 at Daimler on Airplanes and returned to coach-building after the war.

In 1911 Census lived at 74 Aldbourne Road Coventry, Coventry. In 1912 his parents and 2 siblings joined 2 of his other siblings in emigrating to Canada. He never saw his parents and a sister & brother again.

Hobbies in his youth included Boxing, Cycling & Swimming. He saw Buffalo Bill in show at The White City in London. In middle age his interests included Photography, Beekeeping and Tending to his allotments.

During 2nd World War was making Lanchester cars, Daimler buses & Armoured cars as experimental jig-maker, on prototype vehicles for Ministry of War. Was responsible for all local Air Raid Precaution equipment during 2nd World War and had his house in Radford Road, Coventry demolished by German bomb in Air Raid. Finally retired from Daimler after 46 years, in 1953, when aged 70. Founder member of Radford Social Working Men's Club, Radford Road, Coventry around 1915. Original committee meetings were held in his front room. In later life held member card number 2 for many years, even though there was now no number 1, thought if he became number 1 he'd "die".

He broke his collar bone when 85 years of age, having climbed up to break ice from the outside water tank, his ladder slipped on ice and he fell from 2nd floor window height. Said to have called to his wife while lying on the icy floor, but got no reply. He eventually hauled himself to his feet and went in to find her, having succeeded he said to her, "Lill, you'd better come and put this shoulder back in". Following this fall his sons insisted that he gave up riding his bicycle to his allotment. He had a habit in later life of combing his pure white hair with an old black comb, with many of the teeth missing, having used it he would throw it into the corner of the hearth, where it would stay until he wanted to use it again

He was a man of few words, mainly thanks to his wife's incessant talking, however during the months after her death, his sons learnt more about his life than in all the previous years put together. He died on 12th August 1974, aged 91, just 4 months and 8 days after his wife, to whom he had been married for 69 years. Mother: Austin, Mary Ann, Mother Ref: 42002. Mar: 24 Apr 1905 at Rothwell, Northants to Covington, Ernest Albert 294. Died: 4 Apr 1974 at Coventry aged 88. Author's grandmother. Public Records Office list birth as 11 November 1884 but birth certificate shows that it was 7 Nov 1885. Father shown as shoe finisher on marriage certificate.

She was the thirteenth child of thirteen, but never knew some of her siblings who had died before she was born.

During WW2 their house on Radford Road, Coventry was bombed by the Germans. Quite simply, the bomb went straight down the chimney pot and completely destroyed the house, leaving both terraced houses, either side, untouched. Fortunately my grandparents were in the local air raid shelter so were safe. Unfortunately, my Grandma had taken off her wedding ring & left it in the house, so it disappeared. The house was subsequently rebuilt & they moved back in. Some 40 years later my grandfather found the ring whilst gardening.

As a child, my father would take me every week to visit Grandma & Granddad. The routine would be that we would spend the first half hour at the house & then the men, me included, would go off to the local Social Club. I remember Grandma would spend the whole of my time with her, whisking the mix for the Yorkshire pudding. When we then returned to drop Granddad off home after his beer, she would insist that I had a piece of her now cooked Yorkshire. It was amazing. Only problem was that by the time we got home, I was too filled up with pudding to eat my mum's roast dinner, which most definitely didn't please her!!(Last updated: 26/06/2020 14:18:35)

Mar: 26 Sep 1925 at Kings Sutton, Oxon to Dancer, Amy Emily 50001. Died: 10 Jun 1976 at Coventry aged 75. Grandfather of the author of this publication. He was born before his mother married Albert Mawle and appears in the 1901 Census as being named Albert John M Nash, grandson of John Albert & Hannah Nash at their home in Paradise St, Kings Sutton, Northants.

Served in 1st World War as Private 5430038 with Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry having lied about his age to join up at 17. He was discharged 31 Mar 1923 having served 4 years and 1 month. Married at Baptist Chapel, Kings Sutton, Banbury. On certificate he was described as a Commercial Clerk. During the early years of their marriage they first lived with Amy's mother, Ada Reeves, in Kings Sutton, where first child, my mother, Dorothy was born. Around 1928 the family moved to Coventry and lived at 54 Sandy Lane, Radford, which was purchased by Ada Reeves & her father Richard Reeves.

Worked in the Ebonite Shop at the General Electric Company in Coventry. He was a keen card player & regular member at The Radford Workingmen's Club, Radford Rd, Coventry. He always cycled to work, loved gardening and kept an allotment for many years.

As a young child, like most, learning to talk involved some experimentation, assisted by my Grandad. I couldn't manage the name "Grandad", so he became "Yan Yan". I would call horses "Eh- oos" and Father Christmas was "Baba Dee Dee". About 100 yards from my grandparents house was a railway bridge which I loved to stand on and watch the steam trains go by, billowing their steam/smoke all over the bridge. So every time I visited I'd ask "Team Yan Yan, Team" as I informed him where I wanted him to take me.

It would be fair to say that my mother & her father didn't see eye to eye. She objected to his "man of the house" chauvinism, particularly in the way she felt he treated my Grandma & yes, he did make it clear as to who he believed should do what in the family home, after he had provided the money & food on the table. Other than that he did absolutely nothing in the home! On the other hand, he considered my mother to be a snob and extremely self opinionated, who thought herself standards way above others, so he constantly wound her up. Clashing was inevitable. In later life after Amy had passed away, he would spend more time at our home, particularly whenever he was taken ill and relationships between him & my Mum improved. On one occasion, I actually spent 10 days living with him at Sandy Lane while my parents were in Austria celebrating their Silver Wedding, I was 17 and my mother didn't trust me to stay in her house alone! We got along fine, although on the middle Friday night, I came home from the local pub, he'd been to his Working Men's Club, to find a police car outside & all the house lights on. Fearing the worst, I rushed in, to find my Grandad ripping in to a young PC demanding the police find out who had broken in to his house while we were out. Only a jar of loose change had been stolen & I was just happy to see him alive.

He passed away in his sleep at the house in Sandy Lane.(Last updated: 04/03/2020 08:16:15) Albert John Mawle 50000 - 1973 with grandchildren, Lynne, Alysom, Christine, Martin, Karen and Steven.jpg Albert John Mawle 50000 - 1948 GEC Coventry.jpg

Her father was a General Labourer at the time of her birth & then shown as being deceased at time of her wedding, having previously been employed as a Railway Signalman. She had 3 brothers Bob, Bert & Bill. She died at Whitley Hospital, Coventry.

My grandmother was a loevely, caring woman who would do anything for anyone. Perhaps her most selfless act was to take on the responsibility for bringing up her friends daughter Betty R Hood after her friends death. Betty had been born one day before her own daughter, Margaret & the 2 mothers had been close friends ever since. As Betty grew up, she spent more & more time at The Mawle household, due to her mother's ill health. The 3 girls, including my mother Dorothy, were brought up and treated as sisters.(Last updated: 09/03/2020 10:08:07) Amy Emily Mawle 50001 - 1949 Eastbourne.jpg

Appears in 1881 Census as being at Ipswich Royal Barracks aged 18, a driver in The Royal Artillery.

Joined Royal Artillery at Ipswich 12 Jun 1880,"C" Battery 1st Brigade. Number RA 14478, aged 18 years & 3 months. His initial medical took place at Huntingdon on 7 Jun 1880, followed by a second exam at Bedford on 10 Jun 1880.. Served in Egypt 11 Aug 1882 - 1 Nov 1882, (83 days), Awarded Egyptian Medal & Clasp for Tel- el-Kebir 1882. Egyptian Bronze Star, at Khedives. (Soldiers who fought in Egypt between 1882 and 1889, regardless of rank, were presented with the Egypt Medal and the Khedive's Star. The Egypt Medal is made from silver; the obverse (front) has Queen Victoria's head and the Latin inscription 'Victoria Regina et Imperatrix' [Victoria, Queen and Empress] and the reverse (back) has a Sphinx and the inscription 'Egypt.'). The clasp was given for The Battle of Tel El Kebir was fought between the Egyptian army led by Ahmed Urabi and the British military near Tell El Kebir.

A major feature of British strategic thinking was the Suez Canal, opened in 1869, which cut the sea journey between Britain and India by two thirds. A political crisis in Egypt, the Urabi Revolt, led Britain to intervene in 1882. Facing regular Egyptian troops in entrenchments, Wolseley used novel tactics of a night approach march in close column followed by a bayonet assault at dawn to crush the dissident force at the Battle of Tel el- Kebir. Britain restored the Khedive Tewfik Pasha and established control over much of Egypt's policy.. One Good Conduct Badge. His only education qualification was the Certificate of Education 4th Class 1 Apr 1881.

Returned to U.K. 2 Nov 1882 - 30 Sep 1883, (333 days including being based at Bow Barracks in London). Married at Parish Church of St Gabriels, Canning Town, Essex on 3 June 1883.(without leave from Army - note; wife shown as Elizabeth Taylor on one Military History Sheet, no idea why). Marriage witnessed by bride's father, Elias Reynolds & Emma Dickerson. The ceremony was conducted by Rev. D.C. Francis. (St Gabriel's Church, Canning Town was a Church of England church in Canning Town, East London. It originated as an undedicated iron church between the River Lea and the railway to the north of the Barking Road, on the site later used for the brick- built permanent church of St Gabriel's, consecrated in 1876. Initially a mission of All Saints Church, West Ham, it was given a parish of its own three years after the consecration, using parts of those of All Saints, St Mary's and St Andrew's. It was damaged in the London Blitz and demolished around 1955, with its parish split between St Matthias and St Luke's in 1961)

Whilst it is apparent Ernest Albert was actually born as a Reynolds & later adopted by Charles James, there remains some doubt over his true biological parentage of Lily Miriam as she would seem to have been conceived by Elizabeth whilst he was out of the U.K.

He then was posted to South Africa and left British shores on HMS Opoutes & HMS Tyne to reach C Battery in Natal, South Africa (33 days on ship), S.Africa 1 Oct 1883 - 4 Nov 1885, (2 yrs. 35 days), was at Cape Colony, Dec 1884.

The new colony in Natal adjoined the territory of the Zulu Empire. In 1879, following a demand for the Zulu armies to disband, the Anglo-Zulu War began. The early days of the war were marked by a disaster at Isandlwana, redeemed in the view of many by a famous defence at Rorke's Drift. The war ended with the defeat and subjugation of the Zulus. It would appear that during his time in Natal, The Royal Artillery were there in a peace keeping role. He had returned to the UK, well before the outbreak of The 2nd Boer War in 1899.

Tried 3rd - 8th Oct 1885 at Cape Town, South Africa and found guilty of Theft & Receiving when at Fort Napier, Natal, an offence committed with Driver Yates of same Company. Sentenced & imprisoned (56 days hard labour),which he served between 9 Oct 1885 - 3 Dec 1885. (Voucher Schedule 10, No.1 Report for Gunner Covington & Driver Yates). It would seem from the dates shown on his record that this sentence was carried out in the UK. Returned to pay list 21 Jan 1885. Lost good conduct pay which was later restored on 4 Dec 1886.

Returned to U.K. 5 Nov 1885 - 6 Jun 1892, (6 yrs. 215 days)(Sharncliffe Army Camp, Cheriton, Kent Jun 1887 - 2 children christened at Canterbury, 1 child born in Eaton Ford, Beds, another child born in Offord D'Arcy during this period of his military service).

He was discharged 6 Jun 1892 at Woolwich after total engagement of 12 years, Pension years of 7 yrs. and 303 days and 8 years qualification of good conduct pay. Conduct described as latterly good since Oct 1885. Intended residence given as Offord D'Arcy, Hunts on his discharge papers & appears living there in the 1891 Census described as a Groom. 2 further children born in Offord D'Arcy. (Offord D'Arcy is a village 4.2 miles north of St Neots and 3 miles south-west of Huntingdon. Offord D'Arcy is in Huntingdonshire which is now a non-metropolitan district of Cambs as well as a historic county of England. It is the twin village of Offord Cluny and together they are known as The Offords) Final child born in Rothwell in 1899 and then appears in 1901 Census living in 14 High Street, Rothwell aged 38 employed as a Groom & Coachman Domestic. Also appears in 1911 Census recorded as being in Kettering District (Rothwell).

Emigrated to Montreal, Canada in May 1912 on Teutronic, (see web page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMS_Teutonic) with his wife and youngest children Edith. 2 other children, Charles James & Arthur had already emigrated in 1907 & 1911 respectively. Son, George, followed soon after. Charles James' Census record completed in 1916 in Canada makes mention of the family emigrating in 1912. He was shown on that Census as being a Coach Cleaner, presumably with The Canadian Pacific Railway, living at 1544 Pacific Ave, 29, Winnipeg Centre, Manitoba, aged 54 (many other English & Irish immigrants lived in that street). He later became Superintendent on Canadian Pacific Railway & later still went on to work for Winnipeg State Parks (Birth Certificate)(1883-1900 Army Service Files)(Marriage Certificate)(Royal Artillery Pay Ledgers)(Courts Martial Ledger Page 186, WO86/34, 11/11/1885)(Census Roxton 1861, 1871). He is buried at Plot 80-0711-0, 3001 Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, MB R3H 1B8 Canada.(Last updated: 26/06/2020 14:18:35) Charles James Covington 1013 - Royal Artillery around 1881.jpg

Mar: around 1861 at Rothwell, Northants to Austin, Mary Ann 42002. Died: Apr-Jun 1918 at Rothwell, Northants aged 79. In 1861 Census shown living in Rothwell, Northants employed as a Shoemaker. In 1891 Census with family in Rothwell now shown as a Shoe Finisher. Wife not shown in 1901 Census and by 1911 Census he was still in Rothwell, a widower aged 72.

Northants has a long history of shoemaking dating back to the 15th Century, when assizes (decrees) regulated prices for cordwainers (the medieval name for shoemakers).

Northampton’s suitability for shoemaking was down to a good supply of material (a large cattle market!) and its central location for distribution. In 1642 a group of shoemakers won a contract to supply the army, and by 1841 the shoe industry had grown to nearly 2000 shoemakers, although the process of making shoes had differed little from earlier centuries.

Shoemakers usually had workshops in their homes, where wives and children helped out and often worked on Sundays to have more cash for the pub on Sunday nights. But they had to be highly literate, keeping records and conforming to measurements to ensure that shoes fitted correctly.

By the mid 19th century certain shoemakers were described as 'manufacturers', employing a large number of shoemakers, supplying them materials and selling the finished product to buyers. Businessmen recognised that mechanisation meant profit, which meant more factory hands and less shoemakers, leading to the mechanisation dispute of 1857-59.

In 1858, the Northampton Boot and Shoe-makers Mutual Protection Society was formed to oppose mechanisation, and in 1859 when the manufacturers of Northampton issued a statement confirming that machines to close shoe uppers were to be introduced, the Society called a strike urging shoemakers to seek work outside of Northampton. However, the strike failed as many shoemakers did not object to machines if they didn't threaten their jobs.

Just as business was returning to normal, the construction of Isaac, Campbell and Co’s factory in 1859 changed everything. The factory wanted all of its shoemakers to work inside the factory and tried to entice them with appeasements. However, the fixed wages and hours represented an end to the workers’ autonomy and it failed. But in 1861 the Turner Brothers took over, and four years later they were producing 100,000 pairs of shoes a week using steam engines. The shoe factory had arrived.(Last updated: 29/07/2020 09:12:33) Kettering Rd, Rothwell.jpg Mary Ann WELLS. Ref: 42002. Born: early 1842 at East Haddon, Northants. Mar: 15 Sep 1901 at Hendon, London to Mawle, Albert 50002. Died: Jul-Sep 1918 at Kensington, London aged 39. Baptised in Parish of Kings Sutton, County of Northants on 20 May 1880. At time of marriage she was living at 49 Pember Road, Kensal Rise, Willesden.

In 1860 the Hampstead Junction Railway was opened. Next year a new station appeared called Kensal Green & Harlesden. In 1873 it was moved half a mile to the east and renamed Kensal Green. There was Willesden Junction station nearby. Buses and later trams also connected Kensal Green to London.

Large scale housing construction followed, mainly two-storey cottages. Sanitation was poor, and many residents kept pigs. Indeed, the slaughtering and selling off of a pig at the Plough was one of the highlights of the week. Towards the end of the 19th century local landlords All Souls College, Oxford stepped up the urban development. Chamberlayne Road was built to connected Kensal with Willesden Green. The new area was called Kensal Rise. Kensal Green Station was renamed Kensal Rise in 1890.

Schools and churches opened between 1877 and 1913. Housing now stretched all the way to Harlesden. Of interest are the houses built by Charles Langler and Charles Pinkham, like those in Clifford Gardens (about 1897) with decorated facades.

Despite the proximity of respectable Queen's Park to the east, and gifts of land, libraries and clubs by Victorian philanthropists, Kensal had a reputation of being a near slum, although some better off people, like clerks, accounts and salesmen employed in the City lived here, too.(Last updated: 09/03/2020 10:18:40) Kings Sutton Parish Church.jpg ALBERT HARRISON DANCER. There is a pretty ring of bells, Besides a bowling alley. Wine and liquor in good store, Pretty maidens plenty. Can a man desire more? There ain’t such a town in twenty!

This is how a nursery rhyme published by Halliwell in 1760 described the village. Though many changes have taken place over the centuries it is as true today as it was over two hundred years ago.

King’s Sutton is the only village in the parish and has expanded over the years to include the hamlet of Astrop to the East. Other hamlets, such as Purston and Walton, have shrunk in size to little more than farms surrounded by a few houses. The name is given as “Svdtone” in the Domesday Book of 1086 when most of the village was recorded as belonging to the King. It is, however, another two hundred years before the royal connection appears, with the names “Suttun Regis” in 1252 and “Kinges Sutton” in 1294. Sutton means “South Farm”, possibly with reference to Purston in the North of the parish, though there are other suggestions relating to the village’s location in the South of the county.(Last updated: 28/07/2020 17:45:25) Kings Sutton circa 1900.jpg Ada Emily DANCER. The Roxton Congregational Chapel, where Jane married George is Grade II* listed, and originates from 1808, when meetings were held in a barn. The chapel was formerly established in 1822 and the barn converted into a thatched Cottage orné style chapel. In the 1830s two wings were added; one for the vestry and the other for the village school and Sunday School. The chapel is an independent Christian church affiliated to the Congregational Federation. The Church had a pastor until at least 1947 but nowadays external preachers come from a variety of denominations. Administration of the church is by three, annually elected, voluntary deacons. Excavations have shown evidence the locality was occupied in the Iron-Age, Roman and Saxon periods.

In Domesday of 1086 the Middle English orthography as to both modern 'th' digraph sounds was often in different forms particularly as to this county — the place is LaLega. By 1372 it is Thyrleye. In 1813, Thurleigh, or Thurley, is recorded as being in the Hundred of Willey and the Deanery of Eaton. The scribes were particularly ecclesiastical for the county as Lega is a very Latin-esque form of leigh.

There was a church here in Saxon times. The current church has some parts still dating from around 1150, and at about that same time a castle was built here.(Last updated: 30/06/2020 18:14:40) Therfield Church 3.jpg WILLIAM WELLS. In 1851 Census shown living in Wales St, Rothwell with family, employed as an Agricultural Labourer.

The ridge on which present day Rothwell stands, overlooking the gentle Ise Valley, has witnessed the comings and goings of successive generations. Four thousand years ago Bronze Age mourners buried their dead alongside offerings of food in vessels. The Romano-British people, two thousand years later, built a settlement in what is now Rothwell. Dark Age invaders came next and founded the Danish settlement of "Rodewell" or "place of the red well", presumably so-called because of the area's many freshwater springs coloured red by iron and other minerals.

By the early Middle Ages Rothwell, or "Rowell" as it is known locally, was already a town of some importance, dominating the then smaller settlement of Kettering (a state of affairs which persisted until the arrival in Kettering of the railway). A charter, granted by King John in AD 1204 permitting a weekly market and annual fair, confirmed the trade. Both a market and a fair are still extant. The market is held every Monday and the fair, called "Rowell Fair", takes place on Market Hill during the week following Trinity Sunday.

The town has a rich history and possesses a large parish church, the longest in the county and complete with bone-crypt, and the Market House built by Thomas Tresham in 1578. Rothwell was once one of the three largest towns in Northants, the other two being Northampton and Stamford (which is now in Lincolnshire). Rothwell is also on the pilgrimage route from the former Benedictine Abbey at Peterborough to Santiago de Compostella, a route still used today.(Last updated: 29/07/2020 09:19:18) Rothwell old map.jpg Mary WELLS. The oldest part of the Eydon Church of England parish church of Saint Nicholas is the Norman baptismal font. A north aisle of two bays was added to the nave early in the 13th century. The west tower was added early in the 14th century. The north windows and (now blocked) doorway of the north aisle and the south windows of the chancel are 14th century Decorated Gothic. The west window of the north aisle is late medieval, being late Perpendicular Gothic.

In 1864–5 the church was restored under the direction of the Gothic Revival architect R.C. Hussey. Hussey added a south aisle, extended the north aisle eastwards to four bays, added a northeast vestry, and moved to the vestry a recumbent effigy of a lady that dates from about 1340. The church's other notable monument is a wall-mounted tablet in grey and white marble to Rev. Francis Annesley, who died in 1811. It was carved by John Bacon the younger and it is now in the south aisle. In the windows of the ,north aisle are some stained glass heraldic shields made in about 1830.(Last updated: 29/07/2020 09:45:15) Eydon Church Clock.jpg Mary Ann DANCER. Ref: 45009. The Domesday Book of 1086 recorded that Eydon had "a mill". In medieval usage this usually meant a watermill.

The village has an unusual layout of two streets in parallel (High Street and Lime Avenue). Lime Avenue now has gaps and fields between some houses on its west side, but earthworks suggest that in earlier centuries cottages were continuous on both sides.

Traces of traditional ridge and furrow ploughing survive in much of the parish, many in the S- shaped pattern characteristic of ox-drawn ploughs. They are evidence of the open field system of farming that prevailed in the parish until 1760, when Parliament passed the Inclosure Act for Eydon.

Northwest of the village, west of Woodford Road and Manitoba Way, are 20 acres (8 ha) of shallow hollows and mounds. They are the remains of small pits and spoil heaps created by the quarrying of Northampton Sand, an iron-rich sandstone, probably in the Middle Ages.

In 1872 the Northampton and Banbury Junction Railway (from 1910 part of the Stratford-upon- Avon and Midland Junction Railway (SMJR)) was opened between Blisworth and Farthinghoe. It passed through the east of Eydon parish about 3⁄5-mile (1 km) northeast of the village. Its nearest stations were at Morton Pinkney and Byfield, each of which was about 2 1⁄4 miles (4 km) away.(Last updated: 29/07/2020 09:47:50) Eydon street view.jpg Mary Ann DANCER. Ref: 45010. Six years later, by the generosity of Earl Cowper of Panshanger and Mr. Robert Smith of Goldings, the tower was replaced. The architect was J. Mar: around 1816 at East Haddon, Northants to Elizabeth 42009. The village church is dedicated to St Mary the Virgin. There has almost certainly been a place of worship in East Haddon since the 11th century - the Domesday Book documents the existence of a priest.

The original church was built on this site in the latter part of the 12th century, the only remains of that building being the capitals of the pillars which support the chancel arch, and the stone font. The font bears the figure of a man holding two winged serpents under his arms. This is believed to be an early sculptor’s portrayal of Christ crushing the serpent’s heads, and in so doing securing the redemption of mankind.

The first church was completely rebuilt towards the middle of the 14th century on the lines of the present building, except that over the porch was a “pervaise” or priest’s chamber. The west door, the tower arch, and the three clerestory windows at the top of the south wall of the nave are typical of the 14th century gothic style.

In the north wall of the nave is a blocked up doorway, which probably owes its existence to there being one of the three medieval manor houses in the village situated to the north of the church. The door was probably in use up till the middle of the 19th century, but by 1877 it had been blocked up.(Last updated: 14/12/2020 20:43:19) East Haddon farmland.jpg Elizabeth AUSTIN. Ref: 42009. All Saints was restored under the direction of George Gilbert Scott in 1865. During the restoration notable stained-glass windows were added that were designed by the Pre-Raphaelite artists William Morris, Philip Webb, Edward Burne- Jones, Ford Madox Brown and Simeon Solomon and made by Morris & Co. There are also mosaics made by James Powell and Sons, one of which was designed by Henry Holiday. Derry, officially Londonderry is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fourth-largest city on the island of Ireland. The name Derry is an anglicisation of the Old Irish name Daire (modern Irish: Doire) meaning "oak grove". In 1613, the city was granted a royal charter by King James I and gained the "London" prefix to reflect the funding of its construction by the London guilds. While the city is more usually known colloquially as Derry, Londonderry is also commonly used and remains the legal name.

The old walled city lies on the west bank of the River Foyle, which is spanned by two road bridges and one footbridge. Derry is close to the border with County Donegal, with which it has had a close link for many centuries.

During the 18th and 19th centuries the port became an important embarkation point for Irish emigrants setting out for North America. Also during the 19th century, it became a destination for migrants fleeing areas more severely affected by the Great Famine.(Last updated: 29/07/2020 10:39:07) Middleton Cheney.jpg

Turvey is a village and civil parish on the River Great Ouse in Beds, England, about 6 miles (9.7 km) west of Bedford. The village is on the A428 road between Bedford and Northampton, close to the border with Bucks.

Turvey is recorded in Domesday Book of 1086 as a parish in the Hundred of Willey. There are eight separate entries for Turvey, including a total of 44 households. The Mordaunt family obtained the manor by marriage in 1197 and were ennobled as Barons of Turvey in the 16th century. The Mordaunt family house, Turvey Old Hall, was replaced by Turvey House in 1792, by which time the estate had passed to the Higgins family. It was extended in the 19th century and still stands. There is a second large house in the village called Turvey Abbey, which was historically a family house, but is now a Benedictine monastery.

The Church of England parish church of All Saints has Saxon origins but is almost certainly a post- Norman building. It is the largest church in the deanery of Sharnbrook and was in the Diocese of Lincoln until it was transferred to the Diocese of Ely in 1837. Since 1914 it has been in the Diocese of St Albans. It has a 13th-century door with its original ironwork, a Norman baptismal font, a wall painting of the crucifixion and some notable monuments, including monumental brasses. The Norman church was enlarged in the 14th and 15th centuries; sumptuous improvements were made by Sir Gilbert Scott.(Last updated: 01/04/2001) Keysoe Windmill.jpg

The earliest surviving parts of the Church of England parish church of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Weston on the Green are the Norman font and the ground stage of the west tower, which was built around 1200. By 1741 the medieval building was in ruins, and in 1743–44 all but the 13th century bell tower was rebuilt.

The replacement is a characteristically box-like Georgian church, with what were originally plain round-arched windows on the north and south sides. The Georgian building had an ornate plaster ceiling, but this collapsed in 1810. The surviving ornate Georgian surroundings of the south door are of a very high quality.

There is no east window. Instead the blank east wall is dominated by an altarpiece of the Ten Commandments thought to have been painted by the Italian master Pompeo Batoni (1708–87), although this has not been substantiated.(Last updated: 14/12/2020 23:39:08) Weston on the Green church inside.jpg

The name Therfield is a variation of Tharfield and anciently Þurreweld. It is a theophoric placename referring to Thunor, and either means 'Thunor's Field' or 'Thunor's High place", from the same Germanic root that gives 'veldt'. It was inhabited long before the Anglo Saxons came, as the Icknield Way runs through the village, and Neolithic barrows have been found on Therfield Heath.(Last updated: 01/04/2001) Therfield Church.jpg

Still to officially confirm link to father John, but it is logical to suggest Bedford/Edworth link and dates are close.

St Georges Church in Edworth is an early 13th- century church with a wealth of excellent carving, St George's belonged at one time to St Neot's Priory, which must account for the exceptional quality of the woodwork and carved stone decoration.

The church was begun about 1200, and the chancel and side aisles were added about a century later. Unusually, the aisles have porches at their western ends rather than the side of the aisle. The east window of the south aisle has a restored window from about 1330. In the 1830s the chancel was reduced in size due to subsidence. The church was restored in the late Victorian period under Revd Henry Buttershaw. The beautiful west window is dedicated to Buttershaw, who died in 1891. in the chancel is a window commemorating Flight Lt David Smyth DFC who was killed in World War II. On the south wall of the chancel is a window with fragments of medieval glass. There is a ring of three bells, the oldest of which dates to 1480.

One other interesting feature is the carved wooden choir stalls, dating to the 15th century. Many are decorated with carvings of animals. One carved finial resembles a dog, another looks like a bear and yet another like a headless lion. The octagonal font is 15th century and has different carvings on each traceried panel.

St George's is a pretty country church, with interesting Decorated and Perpendicular features worth seeing. The church is now in the care of the Churches Conservation Trust and is no longer in use for regular worship. It is normally open daily to visitors.(Last updated: 10/08/2011 09:04:10) St_George's_Chu rch, Edworth.jpg

Bedford was founded at a ford on the River Great Ouse, and is thought to have been the burial place of King Offa of Mercia, who is remembered for building Offa's Dyke on the Welsh border. Bedford Castle was built by Henry I, although it was destroyed in 1224. Bedford was granted borough status in 1165 and has been represented in Parliament since 1265. It is known for its large population of Italian descent.(Last updated: 10/08/2011 09:04:10) St Pauls graveyard.jpg Ann COVINGTON. Ref: 4018. Born: around 1616 at Bedford. Bedford's principal church is St Paul's, in the square of the same name at the historic centre of the town. It is the Civic Church of the Borough of Bedford and County of Beds and has a tall, iconic spire which is one of the dominant features of the town. There was an early Minster church on the site by 1066 and work on the present structure began in the early 13th century, but little remains from that period. John Bunyan and John Wesley both preached in the church. In 1865–1868 the tower and spire were completely rebuilt and the two transepts added and lesser alterations have been made since. From 1941 to the end of the Second World War the BBC's daily service was broadcast from St. Paul's.(Last updated: 10/08/2011 09:04:10) St-Pauls Bedford.jpg

GENERATION 15 GEORGE COVINGTON. Ref: 2617. Born: around 1552 at Bedford. Father: not known, Father Ref: 0. Mother: not known, Mother Ref: 0. Mar: 13 Mar 1576 at Bedford St Paul to Wilbow, Elizabeth 3994. Died: during 1613 at Bedford aged 61. The earliest known within my family tree which spans through 17 generations over nearly 470 years..

There are a number of sources online who believe that his father was John (ref 22445) which would provide us with 2 additional generations back to his father, Robert (ref 22443) but John's son George seems to have been born in 1868. For this to be our George, a marriage to Elizabeth Wilbow, definitely born in 1553, which is 15 years earlier than the George born 1568 is extremely unlikely, particularly in that era. What is more unlikely is the same source's suggestion that they were actually married in 1590 having had a child in 1580 & another in 1582, making George 12 years of age for the first birth & 14 at the second!! The marriage date shown here for our George & Elizabeth comes from actual Bedford St Paul's parish records.

From the 16th century Bedford and much of Beds became one of the main centres of England's lace industry, and lace continued to be an important industry in Bedford until the early 20th century.

St Paul's Church, in which George & Elizabeth were married and he, subsequently, was buried, is a Church of England parish church located on St Paul's Square in the town centre of the market and county town of Bedford, Beds, England. Formerly a medieval collegiate church, the large building of cathedral proportions with its later additions and iconic spire dominates the town. St Paul's is the largest Anglican church in Beds, and the church exercises a ministry of welcome to thousands of visitors and pilgrims from far and wide each year. St Paul's is officially recognised as a Major Parish Church and is a member of the Major Churches Network.

Originally constructed in the early 13th century, the present church building has undergone numerous alterations, extensions, rebuilds and restorations since this time. An Early English south porch does survive from the original 13th- century structure, however, and records trace the existence of a previous Collegiate church on this site as far back as 1066.

The Trinity Chapel of the church was first constructed in 1416, with maintenance of the chapel entrusted to the Holy Brotherhood of the Trinity. The church has long standing connections with Sir William Harpur and Dame Alice Harper, and the Trinity Chapel holds brasses of the couple. Sir William was the Lord Mayor of the City of London in 1562, and his Harpur Trust (which has a long history of operating independent schools in Bedford) has donated many of the stained glass windows in the church. Other improvements in the 15th century included Misericords in the Quire (or chancel) and two additional porches. The Trinity Chapel was used as an Archdeacon’s Court after the English Reformation.

George lived during a particular turbulent period of British history. The major highlights being: 1553 King Edward VI died and Lady Jane Grey becomes Queen for nine days, before Mary is crowned Queen of England. Mary daughter of Catherine of Aragon was the first woman to rule England as Queen in her own right. She was executed the following year. 1555 - 1558, under Queen Mary's rule, England returns to Roman Catholicism. Protestants are persecuted and about 300, including Cranmer, are burned at the stake. They become known as The Protestant Martyrs. 1558 Death of Queen Mary. Elizabeth is crowned Queen of England closely followed by the repeal of Catholic legislation in England. 1562 Witchcraft is made a capital offense in England 1564 William Shakespeare born in Stratford 1577 Francis Drake sets off to sail around the world 1584 Conspiracy against Elizabeth I involving Mary Queen of Scots 1586 Sir Walter Raleigh brings tobacco to England 1588 The Spanish Armada is defeated by the English fleet under Lord Howard of Effingham, Sir Francis Drake, and Sir John Hawkins 1601-1604 Shakespeare's Plays including Hamlet 12th Night Measure for 1603 Death of Queen Elizabeth. King James VI of Scotland, becomes James I, King of England, Ireland and Scotland. Scotland is no longer independent. 1604 King James I authorises the King James Bible. 1604-1608 Shakespeare writes Othello, King Lear, Macbeth, Anthony and Cleopatra and Coriolanus 1605 The Gunpowder Plot. A plot to blow up Parliament is devised by extremist Catholics but it is thwarted and the plotters hanged. 1608-1613 Shakespeare's last plays Tempest, Winter's Tale, Henry VIII & The Two Noble Kinsmen.(Last updated: 14/06/2020 19:17:15) St Pauls Churchyard Bedford.jpg

GENERATION 16 JOHN WILBOW. Ref: 48500. Born: during 1522 at Arlesey, Beds. Father: not known, Father Ref: 0. Mother: not known, Mother Ref: 0. Died: during 1620 at Arlesey, Beds aged 98. Arlesey is a small town and civil parish in Beds. It is near the border with Herts, about three miles north-west of Letchworth Garden City, four miles north of Hitchin and six miles south of Biggleswade

Around 1646 records show Sir Samuel Browne becoming principle landowner in the village having purchased Arlesey Manor (Etonbury) from John and Florence Farwell and it eventually passed to the Bedford Edwards family. The whole estate was split up and sold off in the late 1800's. This period also saw the economic growth of the village with the excavation of coprolite (phosphate rich fossilised dung which was processed into artificial fertiliser) and clay for brick making.(Last updated: 14/12/2020 11:09:51) arlesey map.png Agnes HINTON.
