Painters: Our year started with a very pleasant and interesting stroll along the Yarra Flats, in the Eaglemont area of the Heidelberg Artists trail. Gary Edwards, who grew up in the area, planned our route and provided detailed notes of the Artists and their work at many locations. The artists, including , and Frederick McCubbin who started the Australian Impressionist movement in the late 19th and early 20th Century in this locality. Gary’s input was greatly appreciated. William Winford, our “resident Art Instructor”, spoke on the development of Australian by these Artists and others such as E Phillips Fox and Charles Conder which developed at Eaglemont and other localities around Melbourne and Victoria.

William’s extensive knowledge and experience gave William talking to the group on the Artist’s trail all of us a good understanding of the work of these Artists. Keith Weymouth Topping off the stroll, was Kay Edwards and her delightful afternoon tea and cake for the group among the memories of our impressionistic artists. Bowls 13 members of our Club met with the MCC Bowls section in the second of our season matches on 21st February and upheld the reputation of our Club in these matches, which also included a team from Melbourne Probus Club. Glenferrie Probus fielded 3 rinks, two of whom played against MCC, with a win by two shots for Miller Goodwin’s team and a draw for a team led by Stuart Balding. Peter McCausland led a team to defeat a team fielded by Melbourne Probus by 4 shots, our best rink, which included, Peter McCausland, David Tennent, David Harrison and Bill Grano. Mike’s Mash Well, two more sleeps before the Probus trip to Norfolk Island. Canberra and Port Stephens will be hard to top but the special place in our colonial history is an added swing factor. My in-laws Norm and Joan are coming too, so I will be on my best behaviour. Our new president David Tennent is the joint organiser with club stalwart, Keith Weymouth at his side. Like Bligh they will run a tight ship...I hope we have no Fletchers in the group. Last Tuesday we heard from Gemma Sisia, founder of the School of St Jude in Tanzania. Jock was very impressed with the school on his visit last year. It depends entirely on donations mainly from Australians like you and me. See you in paradise or at the March meeting.. Mike Macrow
