Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries - Oregon Geologic Digital Compilation i RULES FOR GEOLOGY MERGE INFORMATION ENTRY Geology Merge Label Explanation/Abbreviations

The geology merge unit contains 7 parts, separated by periods: General category.AGE.stratigraphic name.Lithology

Geology Merge Unit label (Geol_Mrg_U fi eld in GIS polygon fi le): General category.AGE.stratigraphic name.Lithology

General category - in lower case, restricted to a single principal overall lithology, and generally three characters (this fi rst term is an abbreviation of the simplest general word most descriptive of the rock unit)

.AGE - in upper case, refl ects a single age (Eocene) or a maximum and minimum (Pleistocene/Pliocene), generally limited to four characters. Ages listed from oldest to youngest.

.Stratigraphic name - in lower case, all the elements of the stratigraphic nomenclature are contained in four separate fi elds: Terrane/Group, Formation, Member, Unit, and will not be limited as to the number of characters. In cases where no stratigraphy was available for a unit, like Qal, then the geologic process can go in this space instead of the stratigraphy, or the space can be left as “nd”

.Lithology - in lower case, if a unit has a primary rock type, then the abbreviation for that type is listed. If a unit has a number of rock types, it can be listed as “mix”, “undivided”, the space can be left blank

srx.Tr.of.fc.nd.nd.fi ne = sedimentary rocks.Triassic.Olds Ferry Terrane/Fields Creek Formation. fi ne-grained

NOTE: All of the terms in the different parts of the three merge labels are chosen by the DOGAMI staff and other geologists most familiar with the pertinent area’s formations and lithologies. They refl ect the present general understanding within the geologic community of the accepted stratigraphy and lithologies in that part of the state. Thus, the merge units usually reclassify the unit from the map author’s original stratigraphic scheme. The stratigraphic and the lithologic nomenclature cannot be referenced to a single publication’s defi nition of terms. Instead, they represent the general consensus among geologists, working in a particular area of the state or in a particular fi eld of geology, of a term’s defi nition at the time of the merge units’ formulation and for that version of the Oregon Geologic Framework Layer.
