  • Addendum to School Places Strategy 2017-2022 – Explanation of the Differences Between Wiltshire Community Areas and Wiltshire School Planning Areas
Addendum to School Places Strategy 2017-2022 – Explanation of the differences between Wiltshire Community Areas and Wiltshire School Planning Areas This document should be read in conjunction with the School Places Strategy 2017 – 2022 and provides an explanation of the differences between the Wiltshire Community Areas served by the Area Boards and the School Planning Areas. The Strategy is primarily a school place planning tool which, by necessity, is written from the perspective of the School Planning Areas. A School Planning Area (SPA) is defined as the area(s) served by a Secondary School and therefore includes all primary schools in the towns and surrounding villages which feed into that secondary school. As these areas can differ from the community areas, this addendum is a reference tool to aid interested parties from the Community Area/Area Board to define which SPA includes the schools covered by their Community Area. It is therefore written from the Community Area standpoint. Amesbury The Amesbury Community Area and Area Board covers Amesbury town and surrounding parishes of Tilshead, Orcheston, Shrewton, Figheldean, Netheravon, Enford, Durrington (including Larkhill), Milston, Bulford, Cholderton, Wilsford & Lake, The Woodfords and Great Durnford. It encompasses the secondary schools The Stonehenge School in Amesbury and Avon Valley College in Durrington and includes primary schools which feed into secondary provision in the Community Areas of Durrington, Lavington and Salisbury. However, the School Planning Area (SPA) is based on the area(s) served by the Secondary Schools and covers schools in the towns and surrounding villages which feed into either The Stonehenge School in Amesbury or Avon Valley College in Durrington.

  • Aftermath of Kington Langley Revel
Aftermath of Kington Langley Revel Desperate Affray at Chippenham On Saturday the 7th instant, between eleven and twelve o’clock, a party of young men, about thirty in number, from Langley Burrell and Kington Langley, near Chippenham, entered that town, and with bludgeons and stones, assaulted and most dreadfully beat all the persons they met, without distinction of age or sex. Mr. Joseph Hull, saddler, who was called out of his bed by cries of murder, was taken up and carried home dead. Mr. Reynold, a brazier, was carried home bruised from head to foot. He was heard praying most piteously for his life. “Don’t kill me! Don’t kill me, Mountjoy, and I’ll give thee a guinea!” but no mercy was shewn him. He died on Tuesday evening. Mr. Moore, the high constable, and landlord of the Duke of Cumberland, lies in a most deplorable state, and upwards of twenty other persons are suffering under severe contusions. Nearly twenty of the assailants, including the two ringleaders, who are respectable farmers, are in custody. This shameful outrage is stated to have arisen at the last Kington Langley revel, where some offence was taken at the conduct of some young men of Chippenham, and a determination was formed to have revenge. A verdict of Wilful Murder and Riot has been brought in by the Coroner’s Inquest, which sat on the bodies of the unfortunate men who lost their lives on this occasion, against Henry Knight and John Matthew (two farmers), John Thomas, George Thomas, Thomas Pearce, Benjamin Salter, William Tanner, John ©Wiltshire OPC Project/2016/Maureen Withey Woodman, James Isaacs, and William Bryant, (all of whom, except Tanner, are in custody,) and against other persons unknown.

  • Maud Heaths Causeway
BREMHILL PARISH HISTORY TRAIL SITE Maud Heath’s Causeway 2 The gift of 1474 In 1474 a wealthy widow named Maud Heath gifted a number of properties in Chippenham into a trust fund so that the income from them could be used to create and maintain a causeway. This enabled folk from in and around Bremhill to travel to and from Chippenham by foot or packhorse without getting bogged down in the mud or wading through flooded fields. The pathway, some 4.5 miles long starts at the stone marker at the top of Wick Hill, descending to the river meadows at Kellaways before crossing through Langley Burrell and ending at Chippenham Clift. (An inscribed stone marks the end of it on the road, close to the roundabout by St Paul’s Church.) The first known public declaration of Maud Heath’s intentions were made by the trustees in 1698 when they set up a memorial pillar by Kellaways Bridge with an inscription that reads: ‘To the memory of the worthy MAUD HEATH of Langley Burrell Widow Who in the year of Grace 1474 for the good of Travellers did in Charity bestow land and houses about Eight Pounds a year forever to be laid out on the Highways and Causey leading from Wick Hill to Chippenham Clift. This Monument and Statue, Wick Hill, 1838 Piller was set up by the feoffees in 1698 Injure me not’ In memory of Maud Heath by the 3rd Marquis of Lansdowne, Rev. L. M. Bowles and Trustees Her pathway has been in constant use for more than five centuries during which time numerous trustees have been responsible for the financing and maintenance of it; overseeing the erecting of the monuments to celebrate the lady and her gift.

The Manor of Lackham Vol 3 : The Montagu family The Manor of Lackham – Volume 3 The Montagus of Lackham and their historical connections by Tony Pratt and Karen Repko Last update : March 23, 2019 Wiltshire College Lackham 2010 1 The Manor of Lackham Vol 3 : The Montagu family This investigation of the history of the manor of Lackham, close to Chippenham and next to Lacock in Wiltshire, started with the current author’s “The Bluets ; a baronial family and their historical connections 1066- 1400 1” and was continued in “The Baynards : a county family and their historical connections 1360 – 1650 2.” This work takes the story through the period of the Civil War and the Enlightenment to Canal Mania and on into the early part of the nineteenth century. For biographies of the authors see the Introduction to Vol. 1 “The Bluets”. Both of the previous volumes in this history, and others, are held by Wiltshire Libraries, the Wiltshire & Swindon History Centre in Chippenham and online at http://www.lackham.co.uk/history/documents.asp As always we owe enormous debts of gratitude to the people who helped by their willingness to give freely of their time, expertise and knowledge, and without whom this volume would not have been possible. Individual credits and thanks are given in the footnotes. Not credited specifically are the archivists and staff at all the record offices and libraries consulted and who were unfailingly helpful above and beyond that which might be expected. We are very lucky to have such dedicated and knowledgeable people around and we would express our very sincere gratitude to everyone who helped.

  • Excursion to Chippenham, Calne, Kellaways, and Corsham
EXCURSION TO CHIPPENHAM, ETC. 339 details of which were kindly given me by Mr. T. Hay Wilson, I should estimate the thickness of the London Clay at High Beach at rather more than 400 ft. Turning eastward from High Beach the party made their way to Loughton Camp. The other pre-historic camp of Epping Forest, known as Ambresbury Banks, has long been known to archseologists, but Lough ton-or, as it is sometimes called, after its discoverer, "Cowper's"·- Camp remained unknown till 1872, when it was accidentally discovered. It is about two miles south-west of Ambresbury Banks. Both camps have been carefully examined by the Essex Field Club, and an account of the exploration of the Loughton Camp may be seen in Trans. Essex Field Club, vol. iii, p. 214 (1884). Its position is one of much greater natural strength than that of Ambresbury Banks, and Mr. W. Cole, who had been a member of the exploration Committee, gave some account of it and of the interesting objects found. Many flint flakes, cores, and one implement were discovered, besides many fragments of rude, hand-made pottery, apparently of pre-Roman date. From the camp, looking south ward, the party enjoyed a fine view over the woodland, and then made their way to Loughton Railway Station. The Director has pleasure in acknowledging the services of Mr. W. Cole and of Mr. T. Hay Wilson' in connection with this Excursion. ~EFERENCES. Geological Survey Map. Sheet I, N.W. 1889.
