WELCOME FROM THE DIRECTOR’S DESK www.GlencoeParkDistrict.com 847.835.3030 Dear Glencoe Friends and Neighbors: As we celebrate the Sesquicentennial of the Village of Glencoe, we’re taking time to reflect on our own history. Early Villagers valued a strong park system and formed the Glencoe Park District with a public mandate to protect the community’s gateway with a system of planned parks. Because of their forethought, ninety-seven percent of residents now live within a 10-minute walk to a park. Today, our strong park system is a model for other park and recreation agencies across the country. For the third year in row, Glencoe Park District was named a Gold Medal Award Finalist by the National Recreation and Park Association. The honor signifies that we are among the four best park systems in the nation for populations under 30,000. In September, we will travel to Baltimore for the National Recreation and Parks Association conference, where the winner will be announced. We hope to bring home the trophy as a 150th birthday present to Glencoe! One of the physical gateways to the Glencoe community is the Green Bay Trail. After sixty-three percent of residents reported they would bike, walk, or run more if roadway conditions were improved, a robust plan to connect five linear parks between Maple Hill Road and Park Avenue with a multi-use path was formed. When Connect Glencoe opens in 2020, the half-mile trail will link users to gardens, a playground, and fitness equipment, as well as downtown businesses, the lakefront, the train station, and a larger thirty-four mile trail system. We are still in the planning stages, but I invite you to learn more about the project at glencoeparkdistrict.com/special-projects/connect-glencoe. At the Takiff Center, our Early Childhood programming is growing. In 2018, we increased daycare classrooms by fifty percent. Today, we proudly teach 40% of youth from 6 weeks to age 5 through Children’s Circle Full Day Preschool, the Early Learning Center Preschool, and Glencoe Junior Kindergarten. Our Children’s Circle program operates 11 hours per day, 50 weeks per year. Needless to say, the Early Childhood playground at the Takiff Center is heavily used by students. This fall, we will begin construction on a new playground for the Early Childhood wing. The entire playground will be updated with new, age- appropriate equipment and play surfaces designed by our teaching staff. See page 13 for details. As Glencoe celebrates 150 years, we are proud to be the community’s gateway to recreation and fun. From beach campouts and music lessons, to coding classes and Frisbee golf, there’s something for everyone at the Glencoe Park District! Remember to play,

THE EARLY LEARNING CENTER DIFFERENCE Early Learning Center (ELC) has provided a strong foundation for Glencoe’s preschoolers for more than forty years. Our goal for children is not just school-readiness, but life-readiness. We are proud to follow the Illinois Early Learning Standards. The standards were developed with the support of hundreds of Early Childhood educators in order to provide developmentally appropriate benchmarks. Our Early Learning Center teachers use this resource to guide classroom experiences and activities, providing a solid foundation for developmental and experiential learning. OUR EDUCATIONAL TEAM We pride ourselves on our teacher’s ties to the community. The key component in accomplishing our mission is choosing individuals that can easily blend in with our Early Learning Center family. Our educators have academic degrees in Child Development, Early Childhood or a related discipline, as well as life experiences that encompass parenting and grandparenting. The Early Learning Center staff receives continuous development, support and training in and out of the classroom. All staff completes fifteen hours of continuing education each year to understand the latest trends in early childhood education and child development. Our high standards and knowledge base result in an exceptional preschool experience that encourages your child to trust, respect, and bond with their teachers. OUR PHILOSOPHY AND CURRICULUM The Early Learning Center philosophy is that children learn best through meaningful interactions with the world around them in a secure environment. Learning is an active process, whether it happens during a teacher-guided group experience or during free choice play. We emphasize cognitive, social and emotional learning, as well as large and small motor development through our play-based curriculum.

3939 KARATE

ALL AGES PRIDE DOJO Pride Dojo was founded in 1988 to teach and enhance the philosophies of Shotokan Karate. The Dojo strives to create a challenging, yet nurturing approach to training in the martial arts. The program is inclusive, and does not necessitate any background in the martial arts, nor is it relevant to the physical qualities that any individual brings to the program. The Glencoe Park District, together with Pride Dojo, offers classes to students age four and older. All students enroll as beginners, and as they attain physical, mental, and spiritual growth, they progress through different belt levels. Students interested in learning the positive aspects of the art of Japanese Shotokan Karate are welcome.

PRE-KARATE Students learn how to follow instruction, develop balance, coordination, strength, and concentration through appropriate game playing. They are taught listening skills and gain self-confidence through creative activities, while engaging in a fun and exciting environment. YOUTH KARATE Students improve coordination, concentration power, and balance while learning kata and sparring actions. They experience continued growth in self- esteem and confidence as students broaden their abilities and knowledge of the martial art. The skills obtained in this class will help enhance your child’s abilities in school, sports, and other outside activities. SPARRING This class is for students with a rank of yellow belt or higher. Sparring is a controlled fight with safety equipment, where students learn how to block and counter with a partner. In addition to practicing offensive and defensive techniques, students will learn footwork and how to hit targets. Students will be prepared to participate in tournaments if they choose. Students are required to purchase safety equipment. ADULT KARATE Training in karate offers many benefits to becoming a whole individual. Self-defense skills, physical fitness, mental as well as physical challenges, and a connection to others in this age group are principal goals at this level. Karate training is an excellent means to keeping your mind-body connection and keeping multi-tasking skills sharp and focused. It releases tension, improves balance and agility, and improves both health of mind and body. This class is designed for any age and any level of physical fitness.
