PROCEDURE

Date of exam … February 3, 2016

Participation in the 2016 scholarship program of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO is voluntary. Students desiring to take the examination should apply to their Guidance Office, Social Studies Teacher, or Principal by December 14, 2015. The school will then forward to the Massachusetts AFL-CIO, the number of senior students desiring to take the examination no later than December 16, 2015.

All participating schools will receive a master copy of the Labor History Study Guide and application to keep in the guidance department. Additional study guides and applications may be accessed/downloaded through our website at www.massaflcio.org. The exam and instruction sheet for supervising teachers will follow in January. Each exam should be complete and bear the signature of the Principal, Department Head, or Examination Coordinator, and returned to the Massachusetts AFL-CIO by February 10, 2016.

• Basis of awards: a competitive examination dealing with organized labor in America.

• Scope of examination: history and structure of the labor movement in America, legislation affecting American workers, child labor laws, minimum wages, civil rights, safety in the workplace, old age and health insurance, unemployment compensation, worker’s compensa- tion and past and current labor events.

• All high school seniors going onto some form of higher education are eligible for the Massachusetts AFL-CIO Scholarships. Students with union affiliation should contact their local union for eligibility requirements.

• Students that comply with the local union guidelines and rate highest on the exam shall be judged the winner of the local award. Students sponsored by a local union are eligible to receive no more than two scholarships.

• The winner of the John F. Kennedy Memorial Scholarship is encouraged to read his/her essay at the scholarship reception in May.

PLEASE NOTE: SECTION I Scholarships listed in this section require students to take the labor history exam in February.

MASSACHUSETTS AFL-CIO SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

JOHN F. KENNEDY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP … $5000 A memorial to John Fitzgerald Kennedy, 35th President of the United States, created by the 7th Annual Convention of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO Council, is awarded to the student who rates first statewide.

FRANCIS E. LAVIGNE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP … $4000 This award is given by the Massachusetts AFL-CIO in recognition of the dedication and devotion to the members of organized labor by the late Director of the Department of Education and Research of this Council. This scholarship is awarded to the student who rates second statewide.

MASSACHUSETTS AFL-CIO ARTHUR R. OSBORN SCHOLARSHIP … $3000 This award is given in recognition of Arthur Osborn’s dedicated service to the Massachusetts AFL-CIO. This scholarship is presented to the student who rates third statewide.

MASSACHUSETTS AFL-CIO JOSEPH C. FAHERTY AWARD … $2000 This award is given in recognition of Joseph Faherty’s dedicated service to the Massachusetts AFL-CIO. This scholarship is presented to the student who rates fourth statewide.

MASSACHUSETTS AFL-CIO SCHOLARSHIP AWARD … $1750 This scholarship is available to a student who rates fifth statewide. SALVATORE CAMELIO MEMORIAL AWARD … $1500 This scholarship is available to a student who rates sixth statewide in memory of Salvatore Camellio who contributed to the merger of the AFL-CIO in 1955 and later served as President of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO.

JAMES W. DEBOW MEMORIAL AWARD … $1250 This scholarship is given in memory of James DeBow who devoted many years to the causes of organized labor. This award is present- ed to a senior who rates seventh statewide.

HENRY AND JULIE KHOURY MEMORIAL AWARD … $1000 This scholarship is available to a high school senior who is the son/ daughter of a member of the Massachusetts AFL-CIO.

VOCATIONAL EDUCATIONAL AWARD … $1000 This scholarship is awarded to a student who is a Vocational Educational student and scores highest on the exam.

MASSACHUSETTS AFL-CIO’S JOINT ACTION IN COMMUNITY SERVICE, INC. CHARLES COLBY AWARD … $1000 This scholarship is available to a student who attends Job Corps of America.

GED SCHOLARSHIP…$1000 This scholarship is available to Massachusetts’ high school diploma recipients who were at least 18 years old when tested. Passed the GED test with a score of 2250 or better, completed the test in 2011, and were not enrolled in credit courses in a post secondary institu- tion when they took the GED test or at any time prior to taking the GED test. AMERICAN INCOME LIFE INSURANCE COMPANY … $500 This scholarship is available to a high school senior who rates tenth statewide.

FRANCIS E. LAVIGNE SCHOLARSHIP TRUST . . . $1000 The Francis E. Lavigne Scholarship Trust will award two $500 scholarships this year. These scholarships are available to a high school senior that lives in the Plymouth/Bristol area. The scholar- ship is awarded by the Francis E. Lavigne Scholarship Trust Fund.
