Sherbow E-mail: [email protected] Office Hours: Tu 1:30-2 Loree 108 Course Description: This course will explore Hindu texts on the subjects of dharma, knowledge, yoga, ritual worship, and general morality. Several Upaniṣads, select chapters of the Bhagavad-gītā, teachings and allegorical stories from the Bhāgavata Purāṇa, and procedure for ritual pūjā from the Hari-bhakti-vilāsa provide our primary textual material. Class discussion will focus on essential philosophical and religious truths contained in the readings. Course Requirements: adequate preparation of assigned primary texts and supplementary readings, demonstrated by thoughtful contributions to class discussion and short response papers as assigned; three comprehensive, in-class quizzes based on assigned readings and class lectures; a final 5-6 page paper due the last day of class. Regular participation in classroom discussion is expected. This course fulfills the following SAS core curriculum requirements: Social and Historical Analysis Understand the bases and development and human and societal endeavors across time and place. Explain and be able to assess the relationship among assumptions, method, evidence, arguments, and theory in social and historical analysis. Historical Analysis (HSt) Explain the development of some aspect of a society or culture over time, including the history of ideas or history of science. Employ historical reasoning to study human endeavors. Grading: Grades will be based on three quizzes and a final exam in the exam period following the end of term (60%), an 8-page paper (20%) and classroom participation, including occasional, short response papers (20%). -

Venkateswaran 1 Devi: An Exploration of Hindu Goddess Iconography Evyn Venkateswaran ‘Devi’ is a collection of illustrations that emphasize the unifying feminine power in Hinduism, commonly known as shakti. Portrayed within are several deities that have unique stories and corporeal forms, re-contextualized through a modern lens. The ways in which I have achieved this is through my depiction of each of the goddesses, featuring a separate culture or ethnicity found within the Indian Subcontinent. This challenges the current market of Hindu illustrations where all goddesses share the same facial-features, skin-tone, and clothing. In addition, each of the artworks contain compositions that are unique and break away from the typical forward-facing, subject gazing directly at the audience compositions found in the aforementioned illustrations. Lastly, when creating my illustrations, I strove to capture a story or a meaning that would distinguish the identity of that specific deity. Initially, the technique in which I completed this project was through using either oil pastels or nupastels, later adding a layer of digital paint with Photoshop. However, due to different situational changes, I have finished my last images utilizing Procreate on my iPad Pro. With both situations, I focused on impressionistic mark-making, using several colors to create an iridescent quality in each of the pieces. Within my color palettes, I used golden-yellow in each of the pieces to draw significance between the goddesses, for example using the most amount of gold in Durga to emphasize how she’s the ultimate form of shakti. My intent of displaying these images is through posters that can either be used as iconography within worship or hung up as decoration. -

The time span of the period is uncertain. Philological and linguistic evidence indicates that the Rigveda, the oldest of the Vedas, was com- posed roughly between 1700 and 1100 BCE, also referred to as the early Vedic period. The end of the period is commonly estimated to have occurred about 500 BCE, and 150 BCE has been suggested as a terminus ante quem for all Vedic Sanskrit literature. Transmission of texts in the Vedic period was by oral tradition alone, and a literary tradition set in only in post-Vedic times. Despite the difficulties in dating the period, the Vedas can safely be assumed to be several thousands of years old. The associated culture, sometimes referred to as Vedic civilization, was probably centred early on in the northern and northwestern parts of the Indian subcontinent, but has now spread and constitutes the basis of contemporary Indian culture. Hinduism Around the World Numbering approximately 1 billion in global followers, Hinduism is the third-largest religion in the world. Though more than 90 percent of Hindus live on the Indian subcontinent (India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan), the Hindu diaspora’s impact can still be felt today. Hindus live on every continent, and there are three Hindu majority countries in the world: India, Nepal, and Mauritius. Hindu Diaspora Over Centuries Hinduism began in the Indian subcontinent and gradually spread east to what is now contemporary Southeast Asia. Ancient Hindu cultures thrived as far as Cambodia, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Some of the architectural works (including the famous Angkor Wat temple in Cambodia) still remain as vestiges of Hindu contact. Hinduism in Southeast Asia co-worshipped with Buddhism for centuries. However, over time, Buddhism (and later Islam in countries such as Indonesia) gradually grew more prominent. By the 10th century, the practice of Hinduism in the region had waned, though its influence continued to be strong. To date, Southeast Asia has the two highest populations of native, non-Indic Hindus: the Balinese Hindus of Indonesia and the Cham people of Vietnam. The next major migration took place during the Colonial Period, when Hindus were often taken as indentured laborers to British and Dutch colonies. Pre- cursors of this Vedic faith may include some aspects of the Dravidians, advanced cultures of the Indus Valley, and the Harappans. A hotly contested scholarly reconstruction concludes that those called Aryans who were nomadic invaders from outside India eventually overran these highly organized cultures. Others though maintain that this religion is not foreign-born. Indian religion and philosophy have influenced many other religions and cultures. The country could be considered the birthplace of Eastern thought and practice. By pointing out to students that Hinduism provides ample opportunity to begin comparing and contrasting Eastern and Western forms of religious ways, they may better appreciate why it is the first global religion presented in the book. Indian religion combines the material and the spiritual in creative ways. There is something for everyone -- from the advocate of a strictly trained body to the quite philosophical thinker. India has room for all. The tolerance found in this culture of competing gods is refreshing, especially in today s world of tension and conflict when lives are lost over religious differences. Please provide an update since IND31339 on whether members of the TDP have recently been attacked in India, and in Andhra Pradesh in particular, and, if so, whether they have been attacked by members of the Congress Party or of the Reddy caste or ethnicity. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) is based in Andhra Pradesh. Telegu Desam means Telugu Nation. It is currently in opposition to the Indian National Congress in the state government of Andhra Pradesh. Telugu Desam (Telugu Nation) was reported to have disbanded in March 1992, but a revitalized party, led by former film star Nandmuri Tarak (N. T.) Rama RAO, swept into power in the 1994 state election. Subsequent intraparty divisions ultimately saw the reform- minded Chandrababu Naidu replace Rao as chief minister in September 1995. The leadership of the Rao faction passed, after Rao’s death in January 1996, to his widow, Lakshmi Parvathi.1 In the 1996 general election to the Lok Sabha (lower house) the TDP-Naidu (or TDP-Babu) won 16 lower house seats as a member of the United Front. In 1998 the Parvathi faction, having organized separately as the NTR Telugu Desam Party, won no seats, while the Naidu faction slipped from 16 seats to 12. In March 1999 the TDP leadership voted to leave the United Front, in part because the alliance’s central committee had decided to support a Congress Party candidate for speaker of the Lok Sabha.2 Under Naidu the TDP achieved major gains in 1999 for the general election to the Lokh Sabha, winning 29 Lok Sabha seats and extending its support to the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government – a coalition of 24 parties under the leadership of the fundamentalist Bharatiya Janata Party, without, however, joining the Council of Ministers. -

Sources Political and cultural history of the period from C 600 to 300 BCE is known for the first time by a possibility of comparing evidence from different kinds of literary sources. Buddhist and Jaina texts form an authentic source of the political history of ancient India. The first four books of Sutta pitaka -- the Digha, Majjhima, Samyutta and Anguttara nikayas -- and the entire Vinaya pitaka were composed between the 5th and 3rd centuries BCE. The Sutta nipata also belongs to this period. The Jaina texts Bhagavati sutra and Parisisthaparvan represent the tradition that can be used as historical source material for this period. The Puranas also provide useful information on dynastic history. A comparison of Buddhist, Puranic and Jaina texts on the details of dynastic history reveals more disagreement. This may be due to the fact that they were compiled at different times. Apart from indigenous literary sources, there are number of Greek and Latin narratives of Alexander’s military achievements. They describe the political situation prevailing in northwest on the eve of Alexander’s invasion.
