Pray for us that we may be courageous and compassionate, strong and faithful followers of her Son, Jesus. By your intercession, obtain for us the unification of our parish, and the fruitfulness of our mission to make disciples. Blessed be God in his angels and in his saints, through Christ, our Lord. MASS AT ARCHANGEL GABRIEL Amen. READINGS FOR THE THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME MASS AT ARCHANGEL GABRIEL ENTRANCE ANTIPHON Let the heart of those who seek the Lord rejoice; seek the Lord and be strengthened; seek his face evermore. FIRST READING — Exodus 22:20-26 Thus says the LORD: “You shall not molest or oppress an alien, for you were once aliens yourselves in the land of Egypt. You shall not wrong any widow or orphan. If ever you wrong them and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry. My wrath will flare up, and I will kill you with the sword; then your own wives will be widows, and your children orphans.“If you lend money to one of your poor neighbors among my people, you shall not act like an extortioner toward him by demanding interest from him. If you take your neighbor’s cloak as a pledge, you shall return it to him before sunset; for this cloak of his is the only covering he has for his body. What else has he to sleep in? If he cries out to me, I will hear him; for I am compassionate.” RESPONSORIAL PSALM — 18 R. I love you, I love you, Lord, my strength I love you, LORD, my strength, O LORD, my rock, my fortress, my savior. R. I love you, I love you, Lord, my strength My God, my rock where I take refuge, my shield, my saving strength, my stronghold! I cry out, “Praised be the LORD!” and see, I am saved from my foes. R. I love you, I love you, Lord, my strength The LORD lives and blessed be my rock! May the God of my salvation be exalted. The Lord gives great victories to his king and shows merciful love to his anointed. R. I love you, I love you, Lord, my strength SECOND READING — Thessalonians 1:5c-10 Brothers and sisters: You know what sort of people we were among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, receiving the word in great affliction, with joy from the Holy Spirit, so that you became a model for all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth not only in Macedonia and in Achaia, but in every place your faith in God has gone forth, so that we have no need to say anything. For they themselves openly declare about us what sort of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God and to await his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus, who delivers us from the coming wrath. GOSPEL — Matthew 22:34-40 When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, and one of them, a scholar of the law tested him by asking, “Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest?” He said to him, “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. The whole law and the prophets depend on these two commandments.” COMMUNION ANTIPHON We shall rejoice in your salvation; and in the name of the Lord our God we shall place our pride. MOTHER OF SORROWS Fr. David Poecking (Pastor) On Thursday, October 15, Archangel Gabriel Parish sold properties associated with the former Mother of Sorrows Church to RCH Realty for $200,000. The sale included the former church, school, social hall, parking lots, and numerous undeveloped lots around the Norwood neighborhood. RCH Realty reports that the buildings will be used to warehouse a large art collection. The sale contract includes covenants that the property may never be used for retail alcohol sales, sexually themed business, “medical” procedures in conflict with Church teaching, or other sordid purposes. The stones of the altar have been interred at St. Mary Cemetery. Some statuary has already been repurposed, and a rededication of the large, outdoor sculpture of the Holy Family has already been scheduled for October 27 at Archangel Gabriel School. Other items, including a marvelous stained-glass set of saints and a set of wooden reliefs of saints, have been warehoused for future re-use here or at other churches in the Diocese. We owe thanks to Ken Zern, Linda Gomulka, Mary Weibel, Jim Manion, Wayne Madden, Deacon Tim, and many others for their efforts at cleaning up the property for sale. Fr. Joe Codori worked some small miracles, arranging for Rome Monuments and Poli, Incorporated, to arrange for the de-installation and transfer of the sacred artifacts. The sale will greatly reduce our maintenance costs and yields a modest infusion of funds. Please remember to say a prayer of thanksgiving especially for the generations of the faithful, many now deceased, who sacrificed to build up the former church and parish in Norwood. God grant that they receive their full reward on the day when all things are restored in Christ! • Elsewhere in this bulletin you’ll find pages on the upcoming general election, reprinted from materials prepared by the Pennsylvania Catholic Conference, the social-legal-political arm of the bishops of the Commonwealth.
