For Immediate Release: August 26, 2014 BROADWAY COMPOSERS BENJ PASEK & JUSTIN PAUL HOLD CONCERT & MASTERCLASSES AT CAROUSEL THEATRE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE Vancouver BC- Carousel Theatre for Young People (CTYP) is delighted to announce Tony-nominated songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will visit Vancouver from December 7-9, 2014, in conjunction with the opening of their new, anticipated musical – James and the Giant Peach. In addition to attending CTYP’s Gala Opening for the beloved production, Pasek and Paul will perform an intimate concert on Monday, December 8 @ The Waterfront Theatre, featuring their music from Edges, DogFight, James and the Giant Peach, A Christmas Story, The Musical and more. While in the city, the duo will also teach a series of coveted daytime masterclasses for musical theatre performers – the perfect ‘early’ Christmas gift for the theatregoer in your family. Tickets for An Evening with Pasek and Paul will go on sale Wednesday, September 10 through the CTYP Box Office at (604) 685-6217 or online at www.carouseltheatre.ca. VIP tickets, which will include a private reception following the performance, coupled with a chance to meet Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are $150 (includes tax receipt for the amount allowable under the CRA). Regular Tickets: $50. A limited number of tickets for students currently enrolled in full-time theatre programs at Capilano University, Studio 58, UBC and SFU will be available for $25, in person only at CTYP, on a first-come, first-serve basis. Pasek and Paul’s masterclasses will take place on Monday, December 8 and Tuesday, December 9. This will give performers an opportunity to work, one-on-one, with the talented duo on the specialized craft of musical theatre performance. Pasek and Paul’s popular classes have been held in London, Vienna, Adelaide, New York, Hamburg and Oslo. ABOUT BENJ PASEK AND JUSTIN PAUL: Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are the Tony-nominated songwriters of the Broadway musical, A Christmas Story, The Musical, which opened in November 2012 and enjoyed a critically acclaimed, record-breaking run at the Lunt- Fontanne Theatre. In addition to the Best Original Score Written for the Theatre nomination, A Christmas Story, The Musical also received Tony nominations for Best Book of a Musical and Best Musical. The holiday musical was named one of the Top 10 Plays and Musicals of 2012 by TIME magazine, shared recognition as the Best Musical of 2012 in USA TODAY, and received a Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Musical and an Outer Critics Circle nomination for Outstanding New Broadway Musical. Pasek and Paul’s score for A Christmas Story, The Musical also received a Drama Desk nomination for Outstanding Music. Pasek and Paul are also the composers of the off-Broadway musical Dogfight, which premiered in July 2012 at Second Stage Theatre. The show received a nomination from the Drama League for Outstanding Production of a Broadway or Off-Broadway Musical, was the winner of the Lucille Lortel Outstanding Musical Award and received Outer Critics Circle nominations for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Musical and Outstanding New Score. As television songwriters, their original songs were featured on season two of NBC’s Smash and rose to the top 25 on the iTunes Pop Charts. The duo made their debut as songwriters with their widely acclaimed musical Edges. Other theatrical works include James and the Giant Peach, Duck for President and If You Give a Pig a Pancake. Pasek and Paul are the recipients of the 2011 Richard Rodgers Award for Musical Theatre from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, a 2011 Sundance Institute Fellowship, the 2011 ASCAP Foundation’s Richard Rodgers New Horizons Award, the 2011 ASCAP Songwriters Fellowship Award and a 2007-2008 fellowship from The Dramatists Guild. They are the youngest recipients of the Jonathan Larson Grant (2007) in the foundation’s history. They have participated in ASCAP’s Johnny Mercer Foundation Songwriters Project and were named one of The Dramatist magazine’s “50 to Watch” in contemporary theatre.     Playing Every Day on Sesame Street Global Learnings from a Play-Based Pilot Intervention in India, Mexico, and South Africa • Kim Foulds and Abby Bucuvalas Research has shown that playful learning helps foster the development of young children. Adult guidance of this play in meaningful ways can unlock the transformative power of education. Lack of knowledge about guided play, however, often leads to children growing up without opportunities to learn through play. Considering this, the authors analyze findings from the pilot phases of Play Every Day, an intervention based in urban communities in India, Mexico, and South Africa. This program is designed to shift the perceptions of care givers about play and its relationship to child development and to allow them to guide children in learning through play. The authors describe the program’s intent to contribute to global knowledge of best practices for promoting playful learning. They discuss developing a global framework and contextualizing its delivery to empower care givers as ambassadors of learning through play in young children’s lives. Key words: guided play; Play Every Day project; play in India; play in Mexico; play in South Africa; scaffolding play; Sesame Workshop It is well established that play is an integral component of early- childhood development . Research has shown that playful learning helps foster the development of young children and lay the foundations for them to become creative, engaged, lifelong learners. Thus, play constitutes an important part of a child’s daily routine, an often underused space in which valuable teaching and learning can take place (Brooker 2013, Kelly-Vance 2008).

    A Bronx Tale Synopsis A Bronx Tale, a new musical set in the early 1960s, is based on the autobiographical play written by Chazz Palminteri. It tells the coming-of-age story of Calogero Anello, a young boy from a working class family who finds himself caught between his loving father and a charismatic mob boss. In Act One, Calogero witnesses Sonny, the mob boss, murdering someone right in front of his house on Belmont Avenue; Calogero covers for Sonny when questioned by the NYPD. Calogero’s father, Lorenzo, who is an MTA bus driver, wants to instill a strong sense of right and wrong in his son, but Calogero goes against his father’s wishes. After Sonny is released by the police with no charges against him, he takes Calogero under his wing and helps him get involved with the “glamorous” world of organized crime. Sometime later, Calogero is all grown up and a full prodigy of Sonny, but his father has no idea he has continued to see Sonny. Calogero has also developed a group of Italian- American friends that Sonny thinks is a bad influence over him and encourages Calogero to stick to his schoolwork. Calogero meets an African-American girl, Jane, on Webster Avenue which is a very different side of the Bronx than where Calogero lives. He asks his father for advice on what he should do when he and Jane go on a date. Calogero’s father doesn’t exactly approve of him going out with Jane because he is concerned for his son’s safety, considering the high racial tensions on the time period, but Lorenzo still gives him advice.

Wilkommen John Kander (1927 – Present) From Cabaret Based off of the 1951 play by queer playwright John Van Druten, Cabaret was written and premiered in 1966 by John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Joe Masteroff. The play by Van Druten, titled I Am a Camera, was inspired by the 1939 novel by Christopher Isherwood, Goodbye to Berlin. This novel is important in the inception of Cabaret as well as I Am a Camera, as it gives the plot, the conflict, and the characters used throughout the play and the musical.

    A WORD FROM THE PRODUCERS Michael Holzer Jacque Carnahan One year ago, we came together at the Gershwin Theatre for the very first Arts for Autism concert. Dozens of Broadway actors joined more than 150 young performers to take part in a show that inspired, educated and entertained us. It was uplifting to see so many passionate artists collaborate to raise awareness, encourage acceptance and to celebrate the power of the arts. We also witnessed the Broadway debut of Gina Hitsos, a young singer with autism who found her voice through the magic of music. There was an infectious feeling of love, excitement and optimism as everyone left the theatre that night. After a year of planning and projects we are back! We have many new and exciting developments since last June. After debuting a special arrangement of “Defying Gravity” in last year’s concert, we released a music video to share the beautiful message with an even wider audience. In February, we ventured out to the Ice Plant Recording studios in Queens with three former Broadway Elphabas from Wicked to reimagine the song we know and love. You can find the video on our website at ArtsForAutism.net. In May, we joined Autism Speaks at MetLife Stadium for the Northern New Jersey Walk. We were thrilled to be there and show our support. Jacque and our talented musicians serenaded and entertained the walkers; it was wonderful to see firsthand the positive impact that music can have. Now it’s June, and here we are again at the Gershwin Theatre.
