Letter from the President 2019 – No. 8

As Winter draws to a close and we enter Spring, a warm welcome to you and especially first-time readers of the BUZZ. I’m sure you will find plenty of interesting reading in this edition.

I recently attended my first City of Greater Bendigo Positive Ageing Advisory Committee meeting where the committee’s role and terms of reference were explained as providing feedback to Council from our community on matters affecting older adults in the Bendigo region. Representatives on the committee are asked to seek and report on issues, concerns and challenges confronting older people while also offering feedback to our community groups. Of particular interest was a presentation covering the profile of older adults in the region. Almost 24 per cent of residents living the in City of Greater Bendigo are aged 60 or over and this is expected to increase significantly in coming years. Other matters discussed included Seniors Week, the Lodden Mallee Move It project and Council’s All Ages All Abilities community plan. While I am not specifically representing U3A Bendigo on the committee, I see this as a valuable way of raising the profile of U3A within Council and in promoting U3A to other groups focussed on the wellbeing of older adults. I am delighted that fellow U3A Bendigo member Ruth Hosking is also on the committee and has been a representative since its formation in 2011. Please let Ruth or I know if you would like to have a matter raised with the Positive Ageing Advisory Committee.

The Australian Government has awarded the Loddon Mallee Region Move It project $1.2 million to support inactive people aged 65 years and over to be more active, enhance their understanding of the benefits of regular physical activity and increase the capacity of organisations to deliver activities for older people. Macedon Ranges Shire Council is the lead agency for the project and is responsible for awarding grants to eligible organisations who have been invited to apply for funding that will provide new or modified physical activity programs and promote the benefits of physical activity to older people. The Lodden Mallee Move It project held an information session on 11 July, which I attended on behalf of U3A. While U3A is not seeking a grant, the session provided useful information on organisations involved in helping older adults engage in physical activity.

Our Executive Officer, Jill McArthur, and I met with representatives from the Garra Wanyarra Wellness Centre (the new Kangaroo Flat swimming pool) to discuss ways to develop a relationship. The discussion proved most rewarding with the centre offering to draft a proposal that would include a range of activities for U3A members at an affordable cost. While these discussions are ongoing, it is likely we may be able to offer U3A members an extended program that may include water aerobics or other activities to improve physical wellbeing in modern facilities with professional trainers. If you are interested in participating in activities at the Wellness Centre please contact Jill at the Office on 5447 1812 or 0427 493 294 to lodge your expression of interest. Of note, the centre submitted a proposal to the Move It initiative and if successful, there may be further opportunities for U3A members as the proposal needs to focus on improving physical activity for older people.

The July Social Gathering saw over 70 members hear from guest speaker Georgina Paterson share details about the Smith Family’s Learning Club program operating in eight local schools. Georgina is based at Eaglehawk Secondary College and oversees the after-school program which relies on volunteers. Willing U3A members are encouraged to offer up to two hours of their time each week to help out at one of the Learning Clubs. The sessions are fully supervised with a ratio of one helper to five students. Please contact Georgina on 0402 245 236 if you are interested in participating. My thanks to Georgina for her presentation; to U3A member Cheryl Scully, who is also the President of the Bendigo View Club which supports the Smith Family, for introducing Georgina; and to the choir for providing entertainment and afternoon tea. A collection of $125 was raised and donated to support the work of the Learning Clubs here in Bendigo. Thanks also to the Trading Table team for running the raffle while selling a great range of goods, which combined with the raffle raised over $300. Special thanks to Marion Richardson for donating the all Bendigo produce hamper won by Cheryl!

The August Committee of Management meeting adopted a proposal to amend the title of Course Co- ordinator to Activities Co-ordinator to better reflect our growing activity-based programs. The committee confirmed the nomination of Lyn Goodall as our new Activity Co-ordinator. On behalf of the committee, my thanks to Lyn for taking on this important role along with her other role as Document Co-ordinator. To reduce the workload of the Activities Co-ordinator, the committee agreed the Short Course program be managed separately. My thanks to Wilf Savage for offering to lead a small team that will manage all aspects of this popular program.

The Loddon Mallee Regional Workshop is being held on 9 and 10 September at the Kangaroo Flat Club. The Workshop will provide a fantastic opportunity for U3A Bendigo members to meet other U3A members from across the Loddon Mallee Region and Western Metro Region while learning or improving skills in physical activity as well as exploring ways to enhance programs, understand the importance of good governance and build community engagement. All U3A members are welcome, even if you can only attend one day or one session. A highlight of the Workshop is an optional dinner where everyone is invited to come along and enjoy great food, fun and friendship. If you are interested in taking part, please let Jill or I know as soon as possible.

The Victorian Seniors Festival is a Victorian Government initiative that supports and celebrates the contribution of Victoria’s one million seniors. Now in its 37th year, the Festival will showcase social, cultural and educational activities throughout the month of October across Victoria. Festival events, hosted by the Victorian Government, local councils, community groups and commercial partners, are free or low-cost, and free state-wide public transport will be available for Seniors Card holders from Sunday 6 to Sunday 13 October. For more information about events and activities, visit www.seniorsonline.vic.gov.au/festival or pick up a free Victorian Seniors Festival program at any Coles store, local library, council office or our office at St Mary’s. You can also call 1300 797 210 to have a program sent directly to you. Page As part of Senior’s Week, we are hosting our annual Open Day on Tuesday, 8 October from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at St Mary’s Hall. There will be an opportunity for members and visitors to try out some activities. Members are encouraged to bring along a friend to introduce them to the wonderful world of U3A.

Page 3 ACTIVITIES COORDINATOR REPORT

Introduction Your Committee of Management (CoM), at its August meeting, approved the role of "Activities Coordinator" and I have officially taken on this portfolio. The role is a modified version of the old Course Coordinator role.

The Activities Coordinator Role & Support Team U3A Bendigo is growing and so are the jobs that need doing. This role needs a good support team and I believe we have it. The newly defined role has several facets to it and: Wilf has agreed to become our "Tuesday Talks Coordinator", picking up from Mary Goodall Touhey. Many thanks to Mary for all the work she did whilst in the role. Wilf will be building on this work to ensure that we continue to offer members a varied range of Tuesday morning short sessions, with quality speakers. Please contact Wilf direct if you wish to present a Tuesday Talk. Ph: 5442 1437 Email: [email protected]  Helen has agreed to retain the role of "Activities Timetable Coordinator" producing Timetables for Rooms 1 and 2 and other venues. Helen produced a "list" of vacancies in Room 1 and 2 for the coming month and we can see we still have spare capacity. It's important that we maximise the resources we have and this is one way to do it; the work also links directly to our Strategic Plan, highlighting spare capacity.  Lex has agreed to retain the role of "Attendance Administrator". Lex and I know this role will change significantly once we are using UMAS to the fullest capacity. The Attendance Module in UMAS relies solely on our Activities and participation. The sooner we complete the upload of participants to our Activities, the sooner we can use this function. An email has been sent out to all Convenors to let me have their participants' names.  Lyn has agreed to take on the overarching role and coordinate the work of the team. There are a number of challenges ahead, not least our change of system to UMAS, to not only manage our membership, but also our 60+ activities and introduce our members to online and offline booking processes Ph: 0418 587 102 Email: [email protected] From a systems perspective we have not been here before. It's unchartered waters yet exciting at the same time. Implementing UMAS is a journey we're taking with the CoM, our Admin staff in the office, our BUZZ Editors, our Convenors and Members across the board. We also recognise that some of our members will not want / be able to use our online services and we will support them too. I wanted the role to be renamed Activities Coordinator to reflect the changes we are going through and the shift in focus. We are continually being advised as we age to get more active and that is another reason for my wish to change the name of the role.

Prospectus The Prospectus will continue to have minor changes made to it. I will check it again before printing for the Open Day on Tuesday 8th October. All changes to the doc are being changed on UMAS as well as in the Word versions until the end of the year. All Activities have been successfully loaded into UMAS, together with data on Convenors who are running the Activities and also their contact details.

I will continue to develop the Prospectus for 2020. This will be the last Prospectus in it's current format. From then on all changes will be made solely in UMAS, either by Convenors or with help from the office.

UMAS Development (Activities & Tables) I am currently finalising configurations in UMAS. In particular Enrolments in Courses. The feedback from members after our UMAS training sessions on August 6th and 13th, was very positive and Coordinators and those members participating are just waiting for UMAS to Go Live.

CRYPTIC CROSSWORDS #2

In cryptic crosswords there are two types of hints built into the structure of each clue. The straightforward clue, known as the definition, is usually found at the beginning or end of the clue. You then look at the less obvious parts of the clue to give you hints about letters and words that you must combine in order to arrive at the answer. Your answer must agree with the definition.

Working out which is the definition and which is the cryptic part of the clue is one of the biggest challenges in solv- ing cryptic crosswords. When you get the answer right, you get a great sense of achievement, which contributes to your wellbeing.

One of the conventions of cryptic crosswords is the use of acronyms, abbreviations and symbols, e.g. “doctor” can be written as “dr”, the acronym for the United Nations is “UN”.

Q: Can you solve these cryptic clues? No arms wasted to buy freedom (6 letters) ______

Puts down carbon copy of scenery (9 letters) ______

Wandering pleasure-seeker, O but a dag, drunk (8 letters) ______

GARDENING AND GROWING THINGS

U3A Garden Group: July Meetings

On Friday 12th July the Garden Group met at St Marys hall to hear a very entertaining and informative talk given by one of our members, Sally Van Gent. Sally told us of her organic, heritage apple orchard; showing slides of pictures she had drawn, which illustrated many aspects of her life on the orchard. At times she read excerpts from the book she wrote about her many ups and down in her time as an orchardist. The many questions the members had at the end of her talk were testament to how interested they were in what she had to say.

On Friday 26th July the Garden Group were joined by members of the BRV garden group in the Bamboo Rom of the Bendigo Retirement Village. We heard another entertaining and informative talk, this time given by Lee McDonald of McDonalds Nursery in Retreat Road. He told us what was required to care for our winters gardens. Throughout the talk he fielded the many and varied question from the listeners. The chatter during our cuppa was testament to how inspired the we all were by the talk.

Thanks to the Sally and Lee; to the BRV group for their input; and especially to Barb for trusting us with the group whilst she was holidaying in warmer climes.

If You Have a Clay Soil A clay soil is defined as one with 50 percent or more clay content. While this isn't an ideal soil formulation, it does have some advantages.

Firstly, a heavy clay soil is resistant to erosion and provides a good base for anchoring tall plants. It's also less affected by air temperature, meaning it offers plant roots some protection against seasonal extremes.

Perhaps most importantly, the tiny particles of a clay soil are good at holding on to nutrients, keeping them available for your plants' roots. This means clay soils are usually extremely fertile.

What's more, clay soil retains water easily, helping to compensate for dry spells and reducing the need for regular watering.

However, this water retention can cause problems. Clay soil is easy to waterlog, and very slow to dry out after rain. And as wet clay soil becomes sticky under pressure, it can quickly become compacted when dug over or stepped on.

Even worse, once compacted clay soil finally dries, it sets into a concrete-like texture. This is very difficult to work with, almost impossible for plants to break through, and liable to surface flooding during the next rainfall.

Improving Clay Soils Although clay soil offers several benefits, the further away from loam it goes the worse the drawbacks become. For a quick fix, mix in coarse horticultural sand or gypsum to lighten the soil's texture and increase its drainage.

However, for large areas, this is sometimes unrealistic as it can take a lot of added material to make a significant difference. Also, working a clay soil hard enough to blend in the sand risks compacting the lower layers, making drainage even worse than before.

Instead, adding plenty of organic matter will redress the balance over time, while also feeding your soil and increasing microbial activity.

Any organic matter will help, such as leaf mould, compost, manure, seaweed, and so on. However, make sure it's already well-rotted to a fine texture, as decomposition in a clay soil can be a slow process.

The best way to incorporate organic matter into a clay soil is to take a leaf out of the 'no dig' movement's book, and apply a thick mulch as often as necessary. Worms, weather, and wildlife will do the work of mixing it into the soil without the risk of compaction.

It may take a few growing seasons for the full benefits to be seen, but it's a more natural process that will leave your soil in better long-term health.

ANSWERS TO CRYPTIC CLUES (page 8)

RANSOM. This clue asks you to solve an anagram of “no arms”. The hint in the clue is the word “wasted”, which tells you to mix up the letters. The straight definition, which gives you the answer, is “to buy freedom”.

LANDSCAPE. This answer is made up of smaller words that put together from the elements in the clue. LANDS = puts down (like an aeroplane), C = the chemical symbol for carbon, APE = to copy. The straight definition is “scenery”.

GADABOUT. This clue uses the term “drunk” as a way of telling you to make an anagram out of the words “O but a dag”. The straight definition is “wandering pleasure-seeker”, and in this example is located at the start of the clue.
