When discussing anything with players, always tells them “the why”. Explains “why” we are doing the drill, why you need to come off the bench.

Day 1, he gets Memphis job. He approaches and tells him he needs to come off the bench to still be a productive player, and Zach bought in.

Fizdale is a big believer in “Growth Mindset” research done by Carol Dweck.

Offensively goal is to shoot the 3, Defensively to guard the 3.

Transition Offense Rules: (See PDF) 1. If a post rim runs = get him the ball. Get a post touch and reward the big for running the floor. Pass ahead to wing or make a direct entry. If the post cannot get a post touch, the post goes to the backside to open up driving lanes for guards (dribble drive look). The trail spot automatically sets a drag screen for the ball handler to start the action. 2. If both bigs are trailing the guards, the rule is find the closest sideline. 3 options a. Bigs are same side = double drag screen for PG if nothing happens on initial fast break b. Bigs are opposite sideline = double ball screen for PG, a horns look. c. Guards are on the same side of the floor = double side ball screen for PG. d. All double ball screens end up with goal of high low with roll man and pop man. 3. No rim run, and PG hits a post in transition near the elbow or top of key, this starts an automatic action. PG hits trail man, and option 1 is a big / PG handoff, the 2nd big sets an automatic pin down, and 3rd option is the big dribble handoff with other guard. Memphis Grizzly player development - all players develop what we do IN THE GAME.

Defensive breakdown drill: Offense plays defense 5 on 4. Offense has no dribbles for 7 seconds, and can’t move. They must pass the ball and find the open team mate. Defense must talk, scramble, and close out.

They play 7 seconds on offense no dribble, then sprint into transition defense on the shot. They keep score by stops. Offense goes to defense. They have 3 teams. Coaching U Live Vegas 2017 Clinic Notes - Nate Hill 5

NBA Closeouts - Goal is to get the shooter off the line.

Transition defense: “Back on the release” If you are in the paint on the shot, you go crash. Everyone else must get back. If you are an offensive player on the 3 line on the wing, you should “RUN THROUGH THE ELBOW” on the way back on defense.

In practice, to keep things fresh, they have 2 on 2 tournaments in the gym. 6 baskets, with different rules. 2 dribbles from the elbow, 3 from top of key, etc…

“5” Action set: See PDF

Jerry Stackhouse, Toronto D League Head Coach, former NBA player of 15 years. “NO MIDDLE DEFENSE”

Retired as a player, and began coaching his son’s AAU team because he didn’t like any of the AAU coaches. He was offered the job as D League coach and took it because his goal is to be a head coach in the NBA, he did not want to wait to be an assistant.

His philosophy come straight from at North Carolina, and his system is based on what he didn’t like to see as a player.
