Finding Family...... 6 Dear Friends, From childhood, most of us have understood that it is good to be charitable. But what is charity, and why is it so important? Once a Refugee, Now a Citizen...... 8 The Catechism of the teaches us that “Charity is the theological virtue by which we love God above all things for his own sake, and our neighbor as ourselves for the love of God.” (CCC 1822) Charity is the cornerstone of Jesus’ two great commandments, and describes not only our relationship with other humans, but our relationship with God. Food for All Feeds the Hungry...... 9 Pope Francis recently stated, “Charity is at the heart of the Church, it is the reason for its action, the soul of its mission . . . I ask for the Church and for you the grace to find the Lord Jesus in the hungry brother, the thirsty, the stranger, the one stripped of clothing and dignity, the sick and imprisoned . . .” Leadership...... 10 For over 100 years, Catholic Charities has put charity, this heart of the Church’s mission, into action by serving the poor, protecting the vulnerable, and welcoming the stranger across eleven counties in southwestern . In 2017, this took the form of 4,724 volunteers and staff members serving more than 4.6 million meals, helping resettle 254 refugee families, and counseling 1,465 people in distress due to mental illness and other health challenges. Operating Highlights...... 11 Catholic Charities is more than a social services agency of the Church. With your help, Catholic Charities helps fulfill the mission of charity given to us by Jesus in the Gospel. Thank you for your support of, and participation in, this mission.
