Please read this Guide carefully as it provides you with important information about Team BC, the 2017 Canada Summer Games, and the benefits and responsibilities that come with being part of this event.

PARTNERS

Team BC and the 2017 Canada Summer Games are the result of many organizations coming together to ensure this important opportunity exists for Canada’s up and coming athletes and coaches.

Team BC is a partnership of the Province of BC, the BC Games Society, Canadian Sport Institute Pacific, SportMedBC, and viaSport. Each organization contributes expertise and resources to ensure that BC athletes have the best training and experiences to lead to optimal performances.

The Canada Games Council sets the philosophy, objectives, and rules of the Games.

The Canada Games Technical Committee is responsible for sport selection, sport technical packages, and sport schedules and works in partnership with the host committee and the National Sport Organizations (NSOs) and Provincial Sport Organizations (PSOs). PSOs are responsible for selecting and preparing their athletes for this important competitive experience.

2 RESPONSIBILITIES, CODE OF CONDUCT, AND POLICIES All members of Team BC are expected to conduct themselves at all times in the spirit of fair play and in a responsible manner. Such conduct is expected of participants from the beginning of their selection camp preceding the Games until they return home from the Games. When you registered for the Games, you were required to sign the Team BC Waiver that states you read and understood the Athlete and Coach Responsibilities, and the Team BC Code of Conduct and Policies. These documents are posted on the website for your reference. It is your responsibility to review these important rules and ensure Team BC has joined with you are aware of the implications the BC Sport System to should an infraction occur. #EraseBullying in sport.

ELIGIBILITY All athletes must meet the eligibility requirements as outlined in the Technical Packages for each sport. The Team BC Chefs de Mission and coaching staff are responsible for ensuring all participants meet eligibility requirements. Failure to do so could result in an athlete being ineligible to compete. Team BC requires that all coaches and managers meet the minimum NCCP certification as outlined in the sport technical package. Team BC does have an exemption process for non-certified coaches to potentially still be eligible to participate.

COSTS As a member of Team BC, you will be provided with travel to and from the Games (from the designated departure locations), accommodation, transportation, and meals while at the Games. You will also receive a full Team BC ceremonial clothing package and pin set. All of this is provided by Team BC at no charge to the athletes, coaches, or mission staff. Some Provincial Sport Organizations may charge fees for training and competition uniforms. TEAMBC.ORG 3 TRAVEL

Team travel to and from the Canada Games is paid for by the Canada Games Council and Sport Canada. Team BC works with the Canada Games Council to coordinate the flights. It is the responsibility of the Provincial Sport Organization to arrange and pay for transportation of their athletes and coaches to and from the designated departure location. A mix of charter and commercial flights will leave from and return to the Main Terminal at the Vancouver International Airport. All participants are expected to arrive at the terminal two hours in advance of the scheduled departure time. Below are the flight times for each week of the Games. A specific itinerary will be sent to all coaches prior to the Games with details about which sports are on which flights. Check with your coach to ensure you have the correct information. Please note: These times are subject to changes.

Passengers 18 years and older must have government-issued photo ID to board the flights. 4 LUGGAGE All passengers are allowed one personal bag (backpack/shoulder bag), one carry-on bag (max 20 lbs) and one checked bag (max 50 lbs). Your coach has a copy of your approved sport specific equipment list allowed on the Team BC flight. Due to limited space on the flights, Team BC is not allowed to exceed the maximum weight and number of personal luggage and sport equipment items. There are no exceptions. Please be sure to label all luggage with your NAME, PROVINCE, and SPORT. Official Games’ baggage tags will be distributed to all sports prior to the Games, but it is important to label your luggage with your personal information as well.

TEAMBC.ORG 5 ALL ABOUT THE GAMES

ACCREDITATION All Games participants will be given an accreditation badge when they arrive that identifies who they are and what venues they can access. Accreditation badges MUST be worn at all times during the Games in order to access the competition venues, transportation, the Athlete Village (food, accommodation, etc.), and other Games venues. Your accreditation badge also gives you access to all Games sport venues to watch other competitions. If you misplace or lose your accreditation badge, please contact your coach or mission staff immediately. ATHLETE VILLAGE

The Athlete Village for all sports other than Rowing and Sailing is located at the University of . The Athlete Village includes the participant accommodations, food services, activity and entertainment area, transportation hub, polyclinic, equipment storage (for some sports), and an outdoor social interaction area.

Rowing and Sailing - for further information on Accommodations and Activities and Services specific to the Satellite Villages, please refer to pages 8 and 9. ACCOMMODATION

Athletes, coaches, and managers must reside in the Athlete Village. Team BC will be staying in the Arthur Mauro and Mary Speechly buildings. • Shared dorm style accommodations which include bunk beds and shared washrooms (range of 2-6 people per unit) • All linens are provided (including pillow, sheets, light blanket, 2 towels) • Towels can be exchanged halfway through the week • All rooms will be air conditioned • WiFi is available throughout the Athlete Village • Laundry machines are available in the accommodations Curfew 11:00pm is quiet time in the Athlete Village and 12:00am is curfew. All athletes, coaches, and managers must be in their designated rooms by 12:00am with the lights out. 6 Access Control and Security • Accommodation sites have security 24 hours a day • Only people with the appropriate accreditation can access the accommodation areas • Assigned residences (or floors within Arthur Mauro) are gender specific, and athletes will only have access to their assigned residence building or floor • Rooms will be locked with key cards or fobs issued to the athletes assigned to that room Damages Rooms will be inspected upon check-in and check-out for excessive wear and tear, dirtiness, and damages. Any costs associated with damage to the room will be charged back to the individual or Provincial Sport Organization involved.

ACTIVITIES and SERVICES

Entertainment All floors in the accommodation sites have a lounge that participants can socialize in during rest times. Please ensure teams respect posted quiet hours. There is also an outdoor entertainment area just outside of the Team BC Mission Office and the University Centre. Hours of operation will be approximately 3:00pm - 10:30pm.

Gym Access Athletes and coaches will have access to the Active Living Centre (located on campus - very close to the Village accommodations) by showing the gym staff your accreditation. The following are the hours of operation: • Monday - Friday 6:00am - 10:00pm • Saturday 8:00am - 7:00pm • Sunday 9:00am - 7:00pm • Closed on Monday, August 7 (Holiday)

TEAMBC.ORG 7 ATHLETE VILLAGE - SAILING

The Athlete Village for Sailing is at Gimli High School in Gimli, Manitoba. ACCOMMODATION • All participants will be staying in classrooms set up with bunk beds • There will be up to 6 beds in each room (coaches may be sharing with coaches from other provinces/territories) • Participants will have access to school lockers but must provide their own locks • All linens are provided (including pillow, sheets, light blanket, 2 towels) • Towels can be exchanged on August 1 at residency desk

VILLAGE SERVICES The Village will offer access to: • Athlete Info Centre located in the Village Operations Centre • Athlete Lounge / Computer Lab, containing the main computer lab, video game consoles, board/card games and comfortable seating • Secured and dedicated WiFi is available in the village, passwords and related information will be shared upon arrival • Laundry services available through local, on-call laundry and dry cleaning

VILLAGE ENTERTAINMENT There will not be an entertainment main stage, but transportation will be provided to off-site entertainment activities in Gimli: July 29 - 30: • Gimli Film Festival • Winnipeg Beach Boardwalk - Summer Festival • Movie on the Beach (10pm) July 31: Trivia Night - Ship and Plough

August 1- 3: • Karaoke at the Village • Gimli Walking Tours • New Iceland Heritage Museum • Movie Theatre • Beach 8 ATHLETE VILLAGE - ROWING

The Athlete Villages for Rowing are at the Beaver Brae School and St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Kenora, . ACCOMMODATION • All participants will be staying in classrooms set up with bunk beds • There will be up to 8 beds in each athlete room and up to 6 beds in each coach room (coaches may have to share with coaches from other provinces/territories) • Participants will have access to school lockers but must provide their own locks • All linens are provided (including pillow, sheets, light blanket, 2 towels) • Towels can be exchanged on August 1 at residency desk VILLAGE SERVICES The Villages will offer access to: • Athlete Info Centre located in the Village Operations Centres • Athlete Lounges / Computer Labs, containing the main computer lab, video game consoles, board/card games and comfortable seating • Secured and dedicated WiFi is available in all village locations, passwords and related information will be shared upon arrival • Laundry services available through local, on-call laundry and dry cleaning

MEDICAL SERVICES IN GIMLI AND KENORA

• Medical Services for Rowers and Sailors will be provided at the competition venue • At the villages, an on-call doctor or nurse will make initial assessment to determine the next course of action • In both Gimli and Kenora any diagnostic, urgent or emergency care will be through the respective hospital TEAMBC.ORG 9 FOOD SERVICES

The dining hall is located on the 2nd floor of the University Centre in the Main Village, and in the school cafeterias in the Satellite Villages. Access is restricted to athletes, coaches, and managers.

Hours of Operation: • Breakfast 6:00am - 10:00am • Lunch 11:00am - 3:00pm • Dinner 5:30pm - 9:00pm • Grazing is available in the dining halls between 6:00am and 11:00pm

Everyone is responsible for clearing their own table after eating. Boxed lunches will be available for those sports that are competing during meal times.

You will receive a water bottle as a gift from the host society when you arrive. Water stations will be available at all venues. It is recommended that you also bring your own water bottle.

If you have any dietary concerns or allergies, please ensure you have indicated this on the Medical Form when you registered. If you have any questions or concerns, contact the Team BC Medical Managers (see page 14).

EQUIPMENT and TRANSPORTATION

Equipment Storage Each sport will have different arrangements for equipment storage and technical space. Talk to your coach or mission staff to determine where your equipment can be stored. Only specifically approved equipment may be kept in the athlete accommodation. Transportation Bus service will be provided for all athletes, coaches, and managers to all scheduled competitions and practices. Bus service to all competition venues will run from the transportation hub just outside your residence. A shuttle bus service loop will also be available to access other Games venues. Details on transportation schedules will be provided to you at the Games. In addition, you will have access to the City of Winnipeg public transit system free of charge with your accreditation.

CHEER ON TEAM BC! If you have time in your schedule, you can visit other sport venues and cheer on your Team BC teammates. With your accreditation you can access the sport venues without purchasing tickets. There are some high profile events however, where tickets are required. Please talk to your mission staff for details.

Team Sales is the Official Clothing Supplier for Team BC. The Team BC ceremonial clothing package is for athletes, coaches, managers, and mission staff only. There will be Team BC merchandise available for purchase at the Games. Items will include Team BC hats, long sleeve shirts, and cotton and lightweight hoodies. Please note that there will be limited quantities available. These items will be available at the Cheer Squad Breakfasts as well as in the Team BC Mission Office. Please contact your mission staff for more details.

Team BC Dry-fit T-shirt

PINS Pin trading at the Canada Summer Games is a very popular activity. Some people might call it a sport of its own! Team BC will provide every athlete, coach, manager, and mission staff with a set of custom designed Team BC pins. You can collect and trade pins with athletes from other provinces, give pins to volunteers as a thank you or choose to keep your set as a keepsake of the Games.

TEAMBC.ORG 13 MEDICAL SERVICES

The Polyclinic is located within the Athlete Village on the 4th floor of the Helen Glass Centre for Nursing building at the University of Manitoba. Hours of Operation: 7:00am to 11:00pm (with on-call services after hours). The polyclinic is similar to a walk-in clinic and includes various services, such as physician examinations, nursing, athletic therapy, physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic, taping services, and a 24- hour infirmary. Services provided at the venues and at the Polyclinic are provided free of charge to Games participants with proper accreditation. The polyclinic will also dispense, at no charge, necessary pharmaceuticals to Games participants directly from the polyclinic. A pharmacist and physician will facilitate this process. To access any of the polyclinic services, athletes must be accompanied by a coach, manager, mission staff, or the Medical Manager on the initial visit. Athletes may return on their own for subsequent treatments of the same injury/illness. Ensure you have your Care Card and you will be required to show your accreditation. Athletes requiring pre-competition taping, must come to the Polyclinic. It is strongly recommended that teams and athletes make an appointment for taping at least 24 hours in advance. Taping at competition venues will be limited to reinforcement and acute injuries. Athletes who wish to be taped with Kinesiotape must bring their own supplies. Participant medical services will be provided at all competition venues, selected practice venues, Opening and Closing Ceremonies, and the Polyclinic. Medical services will be available on-site one hour before and after competition and host society certified medical staff will respond to injuries on the field of play. Athlete withdrawal from competition is the decision of the on-site Medical Staff. Removal or return to competition following further assessment is the decision of the Chief Medical Officer and is final. The Team BC Medical Manager will work closely with Games physicians to ensure they are aware of any Team BC participants with allergies or other medical issues. 14 PERFORMANCE SERVICES Two Mental Performance Consultants are part of the Performance Services team who will be at the Games to support the optimal performance of Team BC. Your sport may already be working with one of the Mental Performance Consultants, but they are available to all Team BC athletes, coaches, managers, and mission staff. If you feel you could benefit by talking with a Mental Performance Consultant, please talk to your coach or mission staff.
