CTIF Extra News October 2015 NEWS C T I F INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FIRE & RESCUE Extra Deadly Fire Roars through Romanian Nightclub killing at least 27 people From New York Times OCT. 30, 2015 “Fire tore through a nightclub in Romania on Friday night during a rock concert that promised a dazzling pyrotechnic show, killing at least 27 people and spreading confusion and panic throughout a central neighborhood of Bucharest, the capital, The Associated Press reported. At least 180 people were injured in the fire at the Colectiv nightclub, according to The Associated Press”. 1 CTIF Extra News October 2015 CTIF starts project to support the increase of safety in entertainment facilities “Information about the large fires always draws a lot of interest. This is especially true in the case when fire cause casualties what is unfortunately happening too often. According to available data, fire at Bucharest nightclub killed at least 27 people while another 180 were injured after pyrotechnic display sparked blaze during the rock concert. The media report that there were 300 to 400 people in the club when a fireworks display around the stage set nearby objects alights. It is difficult to judge what has really happened but as it seems there was a problem with evacuation routes, number of occupants and also people didn’t know whether the flame was a part of the scenario or not. Collected data and testimonials remind us on similar fires and events that happened previously. One of the first that came to the memory is the Station Night Club fire that happened 12 years ago. -
Comments on the Revised Draft NYC MS4 SPDES Permit
Post Office Box 265 The Bronx, New York 10464-0265 www.bceq.org April 10, 2015 Steve A. Watts NYSDEC Region 2 Headquarters 47-40 21st St Long Island City, NY 11101 [email protected] Re: NYC MS4, Application ID: 2-6500-00058/00001 under Permits(s) Applied for: 1 - Article 17 Titles 7 & 8 Industrial SPDES - Surface Discharge Dear Mr. Watts, We write to comment on the above stated changes recently proposed. The Bronx Council for Environmental Quality, is a non-profit 501(c)3 membership organization located in NYC’s only mainland borough — The Bronx. We are a diverse collection of individuals all seeking to leave a future with better air, land, and water quality than we have at present. Since 1971, BCEQ has sought “to establish — as an Inherent Human Right — a sound, forward-looking environmental policy regarding an aesthetic, unpolluted, environment protecting a natural and historic heritage.” We focus on the Bronx, Harlem, Hudson, Hutchinson and East Rivers, as well as the Westchester Creek, Long Island Sound, and Bronx Kill. While we appreciate your work on this permit and the changes from last year’s comments, it is still too little too late. 1. The Public. Do you have any idea of how difficult it is to discuss water quality with people and what they have to do to protect it? It is clear that everyone wants clean water. What is not clear is the administrative presentation (CSO, MS4, Stormwater, SWMP, Direct Discharge) and barriers agencies pose to protect their own jurisdiction. While that may be helpful for the agencies, it is not for the public. -

Bronx Bodega Partners Workgroup Don't Stress, Eat Fresh Marketing Campaign 1 the Don't Stress, Eat Fresh Bronx Bodegas Marke
Bronx Bodega Partners Workgroup Don’t Stress, Eat Fresh Marketing Campaign The Don’t Stress, Eat Fresh Bronx bodegas marketing campaign, created by the Bronx Bodega Partners Workgroup (BBW), was officially launched November 15, 2017 to encourage Bronx residents to purchase healthier foods and beverages at bodegas in the Bronx. With Bronx bodegas selling healthier options -- fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy sandwiches, low-fat dairy products, water and low sodium products -- thousands of Bronx residents now have greater access to healthy foods in their neighborhood bodegas, an important means of improving their health. Begun in 2016, the workgroup includes: the Institute for Family Health's Bronx Health REACH Coalition, Montefiore's Office of Community & Population Health, BronxWorks, Bronx Community Health Network, the Bodega Association of the United States, the Hispanic Information and Telecommunications Network, Inc., the American Dairy Association North East, WellCare Health Plans Inc, Urban Health Plan, City Harvest, the NYC Department of Health – Bronx Neighborhood Health Action Center, and BronxCare Health System. The Bronx Bodega Partners Workgroup together works with 53 stores. The marketing campaign was created by MESH Design and Development, a small design firm selected by the workgroup. The campaign design was informed by community focus groups that included youth from the Mary Mitchell Family and Youth Center and from the South Bronx Overall Economic Development Corporation both youths and adults. Participants provided ideas for content, color, and images. The campaign ran from October 2018 through January 2019 with signage in English and Spanish. The bodegas received posters, shelf signs and door clings. Posters were also distributed to neighboring businesses located near the bodegas. -
