Annual Report | FY 2020 ® Communities In Schools (CIS™) is a national organization operating in more than 2,900 schools nationwide that ensures every student – regardless of race, zip code, Charlotte-Mecklenburg or socioeconomic background – has what they need to realize their potential in school and beyond. CIS connects students to caring adults and community resources that help them see, confront, and overcome the barriers that stand between them and a brighter future. Our Mission Communities In Schools surrounds students Communities In Schools of Charlotte-Mecklenburg (CIS-Charlotte) is an affiliate of the with a community of support, empowering them national organization, working locally inside 50+ Charlotte-Mecklenburg (CMS) schools. Despite the significant impact of the pandemic during the last three months of the 2019-20 school year, including the immediate priority to support students’ and families’ critical needs, we were able to achieve the following outcomes for 2019-20, which compare very favorably to outcomes of previous years: We Believe We believe that transformative relationships are key to unlocking a student’s potential. At CMS, we understand the value that “CIS brings. Meaningful connections The challenges spurred by a global pandemic, racial reckoning, and economic with a trusted and caring adult is critical, uncertainties tested everyone’s optimism and resiliency. The Communities In and this is exactly what CIS continues Schools team and our amazing students faced both hurdles and opportunities to do for our kids. CIS gives students brought on by our school district’s swift transition to remote instruction. While many a sense of hope – it is something of our students struggled to stay engaged, the CIS team doubled-down to increase our levels of support. we all need now, more than ever.” In the midst of these challenges, I had the distinct pleasure of joining CIS. Since my arrival in October, I have been inspired by the team’s tireless drive to provide services and supports to our students and their families. This – Earnest J. Winston Superintendent difficult year has evoked a renewed sense of innovation and determination for our agency. We are more committed Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools than ever to help address learning loss and create equitable learning environments that benefitall students.

Due to the uniqueness of 2020, this year’s annual report will focus on CIS’ response to the pandemic. We will illuminate the ways that we have pivoted and adapted our services to meet the critical needs of our students and families. The report will also highlight the community stakeholders who have embraced our students during these trying times. We are immensely grateful for the generosity of congregations, foundations, businesses, individuals and partners who invested time and treasure to ensure that our team could continue to nourish the talents and dreams of our students.

With numerous vaccine rollouts and schools reopening, I am optimistic about what the future holds. My optimism is tempered, however, by a grave concern about what it will take for our students to recover after being away from in-person learning for nearly a year. At CIS, we are not trying to “save” or “rescue” our students. We stand ready to support our scholars and help break down any barriers they face. Our resilient students have inherent abilities and talents. CIS’ role is to help them uncover those talents, aim high, stay strong and dream big.

Thank you for joining us in this important work. I ask that you continue to support our efforts to empower our kids to stay in school and achieve in life.

13 Volunteering presents new “opportunities to connect with the community and build bridges across difference. I love volunteering with CIS because it allows me to connect with students from different backgrounds and perspectives. You also have the opportunity to create a lasting impact in the lives of students who are disproportionately experiencing the effects of systemic barriers.”

15 We love partnering with CIS “at Merry Oaks Academy. Our Site Coordinator offers guidance with project ideas and helps us with all the logistics. Our projects have become an important and joyful part of our church life. This partnership is especially rewarding because it helps all of us – the members of our congregation and the families we help – feel more connected to each other, as well as to the larger community.”

20 Dine Out For Kids®

With everything that transpired in 2020, we found it necessary to cancel one of our signature events, Dine Out For Kids®. This was the first time in the event’s 20+ year history that we were unable to host the celebration. Special thanks to Bank of America, our Title Sponsor, who supported our team’s decision to cancel the event. Their decision to remain our Title Sponsor is indicative of their commitment to CIS and our kids. TITLE SPONSOR We are excited for the day when we can come together again for this important cause – supporting local students and our local restaurants! Stay tuned – Dine Out For Kids® will be back!

The pandemic was no match for a record-breaking year for the School Tools Campaign! School supplies and financial donations increased substantially to collect over 3,315,000 items for students across the 22-county region. CIS is proud to partner with WSOC-TV and Classroom Central to host School Tools annually. We are especially grateful for the community’s ongoing generosity.
