College Partnership Program (CPP). The program goals are to increase the academic achievement of underachieving students and to increase the number of students, particularly first generation and minority students, who enroll and succeed in college. Through monthly school based meetings and numerous opportunities on the county level, CPP members are provided with opportunities to successfully navigate the home, school, and college continuum.

Students can apply online or with the paper application. The applications are due by March 13.

Here is the link to the online application: https://tinyurl.com/CPPapp201920 Students will need to log in to their G Suite account (FCPS Google Apps in Education) to complete the online application. If you would like a paper application, please see your counselor or Mrs. Veenstra in High School Student Services. All 8th grade and 11th grade applicants require a letter of recommendation from a counselor or teacher. Those completing a paper application are required to get a recommendation. It would be nice for teacher/counselor to have 3 weeks to write a recommendation so please do not delay your request.

If you have any questions about CPP, please contact Margaret Veenstra at [email protected] or (703)426-1033.

UVA Society of Women Engineers High School Visitation Program for Spring 2019 The Society of Women Engineers at the University of Virginia invites high school sophomores, juniors and seniors to apply to our High School Visitation program on Saturday, March 30th, 2019. The program gives young women a comprehensive look at the different engineering fields and UVA’s engineering curriculum through informative speakers, panels, lab tours, and hands-on design activities. The program is designed to benefit participants with all levels of engineering experience, but we particularly target those students who are not yet familiar with the field and may be interested in applying to engineering schools or pursuing a STEM career.

To apply, students should complete the HSV Spring 2019 Application which can be found on the UVA SWE Website (https://www.virginiaswe.org/hsv). This spring session particularly targets high school seniors and juniors, but sophomores can also apply. Students who have previously applied to HSV, are in the targeted grade level, and demonstrate a strong interest in engineering through their essay will receive priority acceptance and priority consideration for an overnight stay at UVA hosted by a SWE member.

Health and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp for High School Students - The goal of the Health and Biomedical Sciences Summer Camp is to provide a window into the scientific basis of human health. Through lectures and hands-on laboratory investigations in state-of-the-art laboratories, students will be introduced to the fundamentals of molecular biology, pharmacology, immunology, biochemistry and neuroscience. Students will learn how laboratory science can be translated into improved human health, and they will engage in investigative experiences that will allow them to apply their laboratory skills to real life problems. In addition, students will interact with practicing professionals in fields such as medicine, physical therapy, toxicology, nursing and biomedical laboratory research. The Health and Biomedical Sciences camp will provide a fun, challenging and engaging college environment in which students will develop a deeper understanding of what it means to be a biomedical scientist and health professional. For more information you can visit the Health and Biomedical Sciences website (http://www.lvc.edu/academics/summer-community-programming/health-biomedical-sciences-camp/) or contact Dr. Courtney Lappas at [email protected].

West Virginia University System to Discontinue Participation in the Academic Common Market (ACM) (Summer 2020) Beginning with the summer 2020 term, the West Virginia University System will discontinue participation in the Academic Common Market (ACM), a tuition savings program that allows qualified undergraduate students in certain majors to attend WVU for in-state tuition.

The following information is from a WVU email communication: “this change will not affect current WVU students or students who enter WVU in the summer 2019, fall 2019 and spring 2020 terms. We are communicating with these students (and their families) explaining that they will continue under the current ACM program as long as they meet all ACM requirements for continuance.

Leaving the ACM will provide greater flexibility. WVU will be able to offer more scholarship opportunities to high- performing students in ACM regions. And those students will be free to pursue their true passion and choose any major (or combination of majors) without fear of losing the ACM tuition discount.

For more information about our decision and how we will support students from ACM states in the future, please visit our updated at Academic Common Market information. Feel free to share this link with any students or parents who have questions.”
