Establishing routes to Chartership in

A working group convened by the SGCP has been establishing training routes in coaching psychology with the support and guidance of the Workforce, Training, and Standards team at the BPS. The SGCP believes that the BPS should be the leading, authoritative voice in the education, training, practice and development of the coaching psychology profession in the UK, and the aim of our work is to formalise educational standards for coaching psychology, and support a more robust BPS coaching psychology register. In doing so, we will also be seeking re-designation of the Special Group in Coaching Psychology to the Division of Coaching Psychology. I’m pleased to be able to provide an update of our progress and information regarding next steps.

It is proposed (subject to approval) that the criteria for full membership of the newly established Division of Coaching Psychology will be as follows: https://mailchi.mp/e6025a4b8632/catch-up-with-the-latest-sgcp-news-october 1/7 18/01/2021 Catch up with the latest SGCP news, October GBC + completion of an accredited MSc in Coaching Psychology followed by Stage 2 training (supervised experience/Society Qualification), or; GBC + assessment of a portfolio of professional practice against Standards for Chartership in Coaching Psychology, or; Completion of a non-accredited research PhD identifiable as being based in Coaching Psychology post GBC.

It is also expected that there will be ‘in training’ membership for in training who hold Graduate Basis for Chartered Membership and are working towards Chartered status. We continue to welcome members who are not currently eligible for the above grades, but have an interest in coaching psychology and it is our intention to retain a general membership tier for those who fall into this category.

In pursuit of this, we have written two sets of standards; Standards for the Accreditation of Masters Programmes in Coaching Psychology, and Standards for Chartership in Coaching Psychology.

These have now been approved by the Partnership and Accreditation Committee and we hope that these will be formally approved by the Board of Trustees in December 2020.

The next phase of work consists of:

Holding a general meeting of the SGCP and asking members to vote on the proposed re-designation of the special group to a Division of the BPS; Mapping the standards for Chartership and designing assessment criteria and portfolio components; Building a business case for a society qualification in coaching psychology or supervised practice route, and developing that route; Reviewing and redesigning the Register of Coaching Psychologists* to include tiered registration, and apply for accreditation of the register through the Professional Standards Authority; Establishing an Education and Training Committee and training and establishing a bank of supervisors and assessors/reviewers.

*Our ambition is that the Register of Coaching Psychologists will have 3 tiers/levels which will provide all members (Chartered, in-training and general) to have an opportunity to access the register at a level that appropriately reflects their level of training in coaching psychology.

Call to action

These are exciting times, but we still have a lot of work ahead of us. We are, of course, interested to hear from any members of SGCP who have thoughts or contributions to make, particularly if you feel that you could usefully contribute to the next phase of work.

Members are signing up to the new Peer Practice Groups

Since the last newsletter, the number of members attending PPGs continues to grow with around 100 SGCP members currently enrolled. We have eight virtual groups, and five face to face groups (although temporarily virtual).

https://mailchi.mp/e6025a4b8632/catch-up-with-the-latest-sgcp-news-october 4/7 18/01/2021 Catch up with the latest SGCP news, October Those attending enjoy regular (usually 1-2 monthly) exchanges with their small and trusted coaching peer group with whom they share knowledge, practice methods and peer supervision. It’s a great access point for discovery, learning, support and continuous professional development.

One of the benefits of these virtual times is we can offer places to any and all SGCP members who wish to join one. We have members all across the UK and in further-flung overseas places notably Australia, Austria, Denmark, Greece, Singapore and South Africa.

Right now, we are looking for members to join two new Peer Practice Groups that are starting up virtually (in the Merseyside/Wirral and Norfolk/Cambridge areas) that as soon as it’s safe will begin to meet face to face.

PPGS are for all of us because we all have lots to learn from one another. That’s why, during the coming year, we are involving a growing proportion of SGCP members and we’re also inviting psychologists and coaches who have not yet joined SGCP. In this way, we’re sharing and exchanging across all sorts of coaching backgrounds and approaches, from young new entrants to seasoned professionals.

You can express interest in joining a Peer Practice Group online, or send me an email.
