Somerset Elementary School PTSA Auction

March 25, 2017 Hilton Bellevue

Dear Somerset Elementary Friends and Supporters,

Thank you for attending and participating in our 2017 PTSA auction. The biennial auction is one of our major fundraisers, and the strength of our school benefits all of us – especially our children. The night will be filled with fun and excitement. We hope you will have fun participating with like-minded parents, families, colleagues, and community members while supporting Somerset students. Your volunteer time and financial support make a positive impact on your children and your children's classmates every day.

This year, your financial support from the 2017 auction will pay for multiple Instructional Aides, curriculum enhancements (field trips, etc.), STEM Week, classroom supplies, teacher training, Festival of Cultures, and many more programs.

We acknowledge and thank all of the businesses and families who donated items and provided sponsorships to make this night possible. We can best express our appreciation for their contributions to our school by patronage of their businesses throughout the year. Please support them as they have supported all of our children through their donations and sponsorships.

Tonight, you will witness many examples of how your support for our school makes a tremendous difference. Our auction chairs, Emilie Castle and Hu Dong, their committee and team of dedicated volunteers have been working diligently all year to make this a great night for Somerset and your children's future.

We recognize that strong education is the best way to prepare our children for the future and create a community of leaders. Education is a partnership, so let's work together to ensure a strong future for our children.

Please enjoy your evening and make "Color My World" a successful reality for our Somerset Superstars. Thank you for coming, and have fun!

Emilie Castle, Somerset PTSA President

8 Dessert Dash at the Auction

It's your chance to choose the dessert you want most. Be sure to check out the drool-worthy desserts available on the night of the auction. There is a bid sheet for the Dessert Dash on your table. Please use your bid number to indicate how much you would like to bid for dessert, then ask your tablemates to do the same. We will collect these bid sheets and calculate total the amount for each table. At dessert time, the tables will be called, from highest total bid amount to lowest, to make a ‘dash’ for their choice from the dessert table. The chosen representative of the table will choose the table’s dessert. Part of the fun is laying claim to the most prized dessert before anyone else. Choose wisely and quickly as other tables will continue to be called. No other dessert will be served. 'Rainbow Turtle' is inspired by a special stuffed animal sea turtle named Crush in Mrs. Shriver's class. Each child gets the opportunity to bring Crush home for one weekend, and then tell about their adventures the next Monday. The kids put their fingerprints on the paper with gold ink and then used droppers filled with watercolor paint to create patterns over the finger prints. The colorful paper was then cut into the shape of a turtle shell. Thanks to: Mrs. Shriver's Kindergarten Class Value: Priceless!

“Our Colorful School” Ms. Brodhead’s 3rd Grade Class

Each child was provided with a paper salmon and was asked to decorate it with whatever colored beads they desired. The end result was amazing! Every child has their own depiction of what beauty is as reflected in their salmon. This artwork represents a genuine reflection of themselves. Although beautiful individually, when all the salmon are grouped together it creates a spectacular array of artistry. Each salmon, like each child, is different. When arranged together, despite all their differences, they form a cohesive and colorful school. The background was created by mixing iridescent acrylic paint with a pouring medium. Additional acrylic paint was added and swirled to give the illusion of a flowing river bed. Additional beads were added to depict the gravel bottom of a stream. In this project, each student chose his/her favorite place on the campus of our beloved school, Somerset Elementary School. The special place makes the student feel happiest and at home, where he/she would like to spend lots of time. The students went through stages of brainstorming, drafting, working on the final paper, coloring with chalk pastel, and touching-up. Then all the students’ work were gathered and sent to the store for framing. Both the homeroom teacher and volunteer parents helped to put together such a wonderful artwork. This artwork is a depiction of our beautiful school, which enjoys not only modern facilities but also natural forests. It is also a snapshot of the students’ childhood being second graders. We hope that you like this artwork. It took 22 students to create it. Although all of them follow the same daily school schedule, interestingly their hearts led them to different places. Raise the Paddle This is our opportunity to raise our hands together, united for a cause, to give what we can to support our school community. In the past, we have built a bigger playground for our growing school and funded a literacy facilitator to support struggling readers. Four years ago, we started funding a classified staff member to enable teachers to provide differentiated instruction for every student. This year, we are aiming for funding 5 Instructional Aides (IAs) for the next two years. The IAs help in every grade level and every class, thus impacting every student in our school. Grade level teams work together to determine how best to share their assistance. With growing class sizes and our staff's dedication to teaching each student at the appropriate level, the support of the IAs has helped tremendously. They provide additional small group instruction, facilitate literacy groups, work with individual students and provide behavior management to help teachers maximize their time in support of student learning. Every one of us at Somerset has a shared commitment that every student deserves to receive an exemplary instructional experience. Video for Instructional Aides ------Dessert Dash

“The Barnacle Reef” Mrs. O’Hare’s 3rd Grade Class

Mrs. O'Hare's 3rd grade class created a contemporary sculpture resembling clusters of barnacle shells from the ocean. We learned how to make paper clay by hand from toilet paper, Elmer's glue, flour and joint compound. The class molded the clay around balloons to create each unique shape. After our paper crustaceans dried, our class painted the insides multiple colors of blue and teal. Then we dipped the tips in white paint to create drips/lines. There are two sections of barnacle clusters mounted to wood strips with wires. These organic sculptures can be hung offset either vertically or horizontally to accommodate any blank wall in your home. Thanks to: Mrs. O'Hare's 3rd Grade Class Value: Priceless!

“Faces of Somerset” Ms. Maxwell's 1st Grade Class Faces of Somerset shows the diversity of our school community. Our classroom is filled with students of different cultural heritages. We have students from China, Japan, Turkey, Vietnam, Taiwan, France, India, Germany and Korea - all building bridges between the cultures. Technique used: Styrofoam printmaking. The students drew self- portraits with pencil on paper. Then they laid the paper on top of a styrofoam sheet and transferred the self-portrait onto the styrofoam by tracing it with a blunt utensil. Once the outline was visible on the styrofoam sheet, they edged the drawing further into the sheet. This way, they created the matrix for the print. In the next step, the students picked their favorite color and transferred the color with a brayer onto the matrix. Pressing the matrix on paper, the print of the self-portrait was created. Thanks to: Ms. Maxwell's 1st Grade Class Value: Priceless!
