Victorian recognition scenes often show a hero’s self- discovery as a retrospective identification with things. When, for example, in Henry James’s The Portrait of a Lady, Isabel Archer learns the truth about her marriage: “She saw, in the crude light of that revelation... the dry staring fact that she had been an applied handled hung-up tool, as senseless and convenient as mere shaped wood and iron.” The retrospective discovery of identity in Victorian novels is often figured as a catastrophic falling-apart of a stable self that is also an economic object or instrument: a bank check, a debt, a forgery, an inheritance, or an accumulated principal. Recognition scenes cannot be considered in the light of a timeless “master plot” or the classical poetics of Aristotelian anagnorisis, but need to be interpreted in terms of historical forms of social misrecognition (such as Marx’s analysis of fetishism). Unhappy Consciousness contends that, if we are going to talk about nineteenth century things, we will have to take into account the novelistic misrecognition of the self, insofar as the heroes misrecognize themselves in forms of commodity fetishism. The thing is so often the subject herself insofar as “barred,” dispersed among retrospective or delayed object identifications. I respond to the historical contextualization in Victorian cultural studies of “commodity culture,” insisting that the economic structure of the commodity is not only a topic for realist notation, but makes up the inner logic of the novel form. Unhappy Consciousness urges a return to questions of novel theory which were perhaps set aside during New Historicism, arguing for a particularly novelistic mode of “objectification” (the form of the hero’s activity) seen in interaction with the historical mode of objectification found in the capitalist value-form. I advance this argument through studies of several canonical Victorian works. Chapter One looks at the tension in Charles Dickens’s Little Dorrit between the ideological closure attained in the “family romance” plot of buried wills and restored parents, and the dead-end of interpretation and retrospection found in the plot of financial crisis and stock swindles. Chapter Two argues that, in Anthony Trollope’s The Last Chronicle of Barset, the tautological nature of interest rate is not confined to the urban financial plot but is displaced and affectively diffused over the provincial mystery plot. Chapter Three is a study of the Sherlock Holmes stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, in which I read the detective as an exaggerated portrait of the subjective effects of capitalist alienation, a monad whose only intervention in the world is to link predictive results with opaque processes, to “produce” recognition scenes (the solutions to each case) as a salable commodity. He is a machine for retrospection who has no personal past. In Chapter Four, I read Henry James’s The Portrait of a Lady as a critique of the fetishizing of autonomous consciousness, using Marx’s definition of fetishism as the misrecognition of a social form as the content of a thing. Isabel’s mistake is to misconstrue the structure of the male gaze that constitutes her “freedom” as the inherent property of her individuality—until it is unmasked as a trap. Just prior to narrating the discovery of his benefactor’s identity—and the attendant dashing of his most cherished self-deceptions—Pip anticipates: I pass on, unhindered, to the event that had impended over me for longer yet... In the Eastern story, the heavy slab that was to fall on the bed of state in the flush of conquest was slowly wrought out of the quarry, the tunnel for the rope to hold it in its place was slowly carried through the leagues of rock, the slab was slowly raised and fitted in the roof, the rope was rove to it and slowly taken through the miles of hollow to the great iron ring. All being made ready with much labor, and the hour come, the sultan was aroused in the dead of the night, and the sharpened axe that was to sever the rope from the great iron ring was put into his hand, and he struck with it, and the rope parted and rushed away, and the ceiling fell. So in my case; all the work, near and afar, that tended to the end, had been accomplished; and in an instant the blow was struck, and the roof of my stronghold dropped upon me.1 The recognition scene that follows discloses to Pip: an unlooked-for intimacy with another person—the convict Abel Magwitch, his benefactor and “second father”; the vanity of his aspirations in love; and his shameful, willful blindness to the meanings of the past. Hardly anything touching on Pip’s inner being is not overturned by Magwitch’s arrival: “All the truth of my position came flashing on me; and its disappointments, dangers, disgraces, consequences of all kinds, rushed in in such a multitude that I was borne down by them and had to struggle for every breath I drew.”2 And yet this knowledge, which penetrates to the core of Pip’s self, is described in terms of an impersonal, in fact a mechanical process: a matter of ropes and pulleys and stones. The “Eastern story” tells of enormous distances (“miles of hollow”) through which an inexorable, rigged 1 Charles Dickens, Great Expectations (London: Oxford University Press, 1953), 297. 2 Ibid., 303. 1 apparatus slams down the massive fact of the stone slab. The emotional and interpersonal knowledge to come is rendered as an external, objective inevitability, removed from any subjectivity, interpretation, or engagement with others. And where is Pip amidst so much hauling and quarrying? He is nowhere to be found in this picture, until finally the slab drops and obliterates him. But the recognition scene that is being described in this fable—Magwitch’s revelation—tells a different story, that Pip cannot be separated from the long ramifications of the past or taken out of the picture. He is, so to speak, dispersed or buried all along the way. When he sees, in the person of the weather-beaten and grimy sheep-farmer, the hitherto-concealed source of his own income and genteel position, he also sees himself as a thing, produced and bought behind his back. Magwitch, oblivious to Pip’s horrified reaction, exults in Pip as a particularly valuable commodity: “If I ain’t a gentleman, nor yet ain’t got no learning, I’m the owner of such.

SMYTHE♦ This article uses a behavioral economics approach to analyze the effects of the doctrine of impracticability on “relational” contracts – long- term contractual agreements that are typically adapted to changed circumstances and unforeseen contingencies as they arise. In contrast to conventional legal and economic theory, the article concludes that the impracticability doctrine has the potential to improve the efficiency and productivity of a wide range of long-term contractual agreements and offers normative guidelines as to how the doctrine should be applied to produce such an effect. The article also examines and rejects various philosophical objections to the impracticability doctrine, such as the arguments that it interferes with principles of economic liberty and voluntary exchange, interferes with the internal ethics of relational agreements, and clashes with principles of moral desert. INTRODUCTION The doctrine of impracticability is an affirmative defense to a complaint seeking specific performance or damages for an alleged breach of contract. It may be interpreted as a default rule that attaches an implied term to every contract that would excuse the parties from their obligations in the event that some unforeseen contingency makes their performances “impracticable.” Although its precise meaning is unclear, the term “impracticable” connotes severe – perhaps even catastrophic – consequences. In this respect, the doctrine is tantamount to an implied force majeure clause that applies whenever the impracticability is the result of circumstances that were in some sense unforeseen at the time the contract was formed. Although the criteria for establishing whether the circumstances were “unforeseen” are also unclear, they subsume, at the very least, the idea that the circumstances were not explicitly provided for under the contract.

Utilizing Scopus, a bibliographic database, the five most relevant and highly cited articles were selected and subsequently analyzed using the logical rules governing both predicate ascription and presupposition. Two main uses of language were isolated based on common sets of presuppositions: 1) A non-human ontology of agents, and 2) Agency as a property of antecedently given identities. Each use of language was found to comprise two further subcategories respectively: 1.1) Psychological agencies, 1.2) External agencies; and 2.1) Realist view of political identity, 2.2) Constructivist view of political identity. The results of the data analysis suggest that the two main uses of language are mutually reinforcing.

    Magwitch’s Revenge on Society in Great Expectations Kyoko Yamamoto Introduction By the light of torches, we saw the black Hulk lying out a little way from the mud of the shore, like a wicked Noah’s ark. Cribbed and barred and moored by massive rusty chains, the prison-ship seemed in my young eyes to be ironed like the prisoners (Chapter 5, p.34). The sight of the Hulk is one of the most impressive scenes in Great Expectations. Magwitch, a convict, who was destined to meet Pip at the churchyard, was dragged back by a surgeon and solders to the hulk floating on the Thames. Pip and Joe kept a close watch on it. Magwitch spent some days in his hulk and then was sent to New South Wales as a convict sentenced to life transportation. He decided to work hard and make Pip a gentleman in return for the kindness offered to him by this little boy. He devoted himself to hard work at New South Wales, and eventually made a fortune. Magwitch’s life is full of enigma. We do not know much about how he went through the hardships in the hulk and at NSW. What were his difficulties to make money? And again, could it be possible that a convict transported for life to Australia might succeed in life and come back to his homeland? To make the matter more complicated, he, with his money, wants to make Pip a gentleman, a mere apprentice to a blacksmith, partly as a kind of revenge on society which has continuously looked down upon a wretched convict.

One is by Pavlina Pampoudi (Patakis, 2016) and the other, is by Thanasis Zavalos (Minoas, 2017). Particular attention is paid to dialect translation and special emphasis is placed on the language used by one of the novel’s prominent characters, namely, Abel Magwitch. In particular, twenty instances of Abel Magwitch’s dialect are chosen in an effort to provide an in-depth analysis of the dialect-translation strategies employed as well as possible reasons governing such choices. It is argued that both translators favour standardisation in their target texts, thus eliminating any language variants present in the source text. The conclusion argues that societal factors as well as the commissioning policies of publishing houses influence to a great extent the translators’ behaviour, and consequently, the dialect-translation strategies adopted. Hence, greater emphasis on the extra-linguistic, sociological context is necessary for a thorough consideration of the complexities of English-Greek dialect translation of fiction.

    The Reification of Consciousness: Husserl’s Phenomenology in Lukács’s Identical Subject-Object Richard Westerman Georg Lukács’s History and Class Consciousness has suffered the pecu- liar indignity of being criticized by its admirers for the very theory they take from it. Like Karl Korsch’s Marxism and Philosophy, also published in 1923, Lukács’s book explored the proletariat’s stubborn refusal to rise in support of revolutionary regimes in Germany and Hungary; eschewing allegedly scien- tific analyses of the supposedly necessary collapse of capitalism, Korsch and Lukács focused on what happened in consciousness, not behind it, to under- stand society. Korsch’s dialectical account of the relationship between phi- losophy and society and Lukács’s attempt to ground the very structures of subjectivity of individuals in their society are now seen as the foundations of “Western” Marxism. Yet while many have adopted Lukács’s account of the reification of consciousness, few have accepted his argument that this very problem produces a revolutionary subjectivity in those most affected by it. Max Horkheimer and Theodor W.     The Purpose of Dialect in Charles Dickens’s Novel Great Expectations Minna Pukari Bachelor’s seminar and thesis (682285A) English philology, Faculty of Humanities University of Oulu Autumn, 2015 Abstract In this study, I was interested in finding out what purpose dialects serve in Charles Dickens’s novel Great Expectations. I used Susan Ferguson’s notions on ficto-linguistics and Peter Stockwell’s ideas on invented language to create the theoretical background for my study. The analysis focused on three characters of the novel, namely Joe Gargery, Abel Magwitch, and Pip. I examined what role dialect – in the case of Pip, the lack of one – plays in the character construction of these three characters. Additionally I analysed the dialects in relation to the major themes of the novel. The findings of this study suggest, that Dicken’s used dialect to both individualise characters and to bind them to a certain groups, which can mostly be defined by social status. The dialects also help make the themes of social mobility, gentility, social injustice, and expectations in relation to reality more tangible. 1 Contents 1.
