A BRANCH OF THE LIGHT AIRCRAFT ASSOCIATION PROMOTING RECREATIONAL AVIATION IN THE SOUTHWEST www.devonstrut.co.uk DEVON STRUT NEWS – November 2010 Co-ordinator’s Comments by Steve Robson The leaves are falling and we’ve had our first taste of frost this autumn. Darker days, water logged fields and numb fingers from working in cold hangars, doing all those little jobs we said we’ve leave until after the season are things to look forward to, but enough gloom! We can also look forward to bright cold days with gin clear visibility; Strut Scrambles and monthly meetings when we can get together socially. We hope to have some new destinations for Scrambles this year, so winter isn’t all bad! I’m starting to get to grips with my new mount, an RV4 but I still have a great deal to learn and I’m certainly enjoying that process. Starting out with a new aircraft feels like walking out with you shoes on the wrong feet. It’s all there, but doesn’t feel quite right, certainly compared to my dear comfortable and familiar Condor. The prospect of meeting the ground at 140kts is something I want to avoid, so safety is fundamental to my approach as I learn some new skills and relearn others. This has caused me to re- examine the way I do things and as I’m going back over procedures and checklists, I have discovered that familiarity can breed contempt. So, what’s the point of all this? For me it was to realise that taking things for granted and getting stuck in old habits without stepping back and thinking about them from time to time, may have serious consequences.

  • The Royal Automobile Club Awards Segrave Trophy to Motorcycle Road Racer John Mcguinness
For Immediate Release: The Royal Automobile Club awards Segrave Trophy to motorcycle road racer John McGuinness Thursday 31 March 2016: The Royal Automobile Club, today, awarded the Segrave Trophy to motorcycle road racer John McGuinness. Acknowledging the Lancashire man’s success, the citation read; ‘An outstanding contribution to motorcycle road and circuit racing, including setting the outright lap record at the 2015 Isle of Man TT. He is the greatest living exponent of the TT, with 23 victories to his name.’ Speaking at the awards Tom Purves, Chairman of the Royal Automobile Club, said, ‘It is our honour to salute John’s career and his remarkable success, particularly at the Isle of Man TT where he became the first rider to achieve an average speed of over 130 mph and, in 2015, set a new outright lap record of 132.701 mph. ‘Lady Segrave commissioned the Trophy in 1930, soon after her husband, Sir Henry Segrave died after breaking the water speed record on Lake Windermere. It was her wish that the Trophy would celebrate and encourage those individuals who demonstrated outstanding skill and courage, whether on land, sea or in the air. As one of Britain’s greatest motorcycle racers of his generation, John’s bravery and sheer speed are the exact qualities Lady Segrave wished to celebrate.’ Upon receiving the trophy, McGuinness said: ‘I’m absolutely honoured to receive this prestigious award. It’s something a little different and I’m definitely in good company when you look back at the motorcycling greats who have previously received this, with the likes of Geoff Duke, Barry Sheene and Joey Dunlop.

Environmental issues, electric cars, venue loss, ageing membership are just some of the issues. However as a hobby we have too many self inflicted wounds. The recent consultation on the motorsport use of forests generated 1680 email responses, 633 of which related to Rallying and 982 from motor cycle Enduro and Trials followers. That figure from all those involved in rallying is pathetic! A typical BTRDA rally with 100 entries will have 200 folk in cars, another 200 service and 200 marshals etc.

  • John Surtees Cbe 1934 – 2017 an Appreciation
JOHN SURTEES CBE 1934 – 2017 AN APPRECIATION The death of John Surtees a month after his 83rd birthday marks the passing of one of the most outstanding British motor sport competitors of the second half of the 20th century. Not for nothing was he bestowed the title Il Grande John, which best translates as John the Great, by the tifosi in his years racing for the MV Agusta team in the 1950s for, whether on two wheels or four, he was and will surely always be remembered as one of the all-time greats on bikes and in cars. John’s father Jack was a successful grass track racer of motor cycle sidecars before World War Two, sometimes with John’s mother Dorothy as the passenger until John was old enough to take her place. Jack had a modest motor cycle business in Croydon and so John grew up in a world of motor cycles and racing. From his first grass track solo race in 1949 and his first tarmac race win a year later at Aberdare on his Vincent Grey Flash, the wins soon mounted up. In 1952 John finished sixth in his first world championship race, the Ulster Grand Prix at the Clady road circuit. In 1955 riding the 250 NSU Sportmax he won the Ulster Grand Prix, now at Dundrod, to take the first of his 38 victories in motor cycle world championship races. The first of six Isle of Man TT victories came in the 1956 Senior event on the 500 MV Agusta followed by both the 350 and 500 races in 1958 and 1959 and the Senior race in 1960, the last with a new lap record at 104.8 mph.

  • Royal Automobile Club Awards Segrave Medals to Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Tom Kristensen and Loïc Duval
Friday 19 April 2014: For Immediate Release Royal Automobile Club awards Segrave medals to Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Tom Kristensen and Loïc Duval The Royal Automobile Club has presented Segrave Medals to Dr Wolfgang Ullrich, Audi’s Head of Motorsport, as well as team drivers Tom Kristensen and Loïc Duval. The award was made at Silverstone on Friday 19th April. Their presentation coincides with the opening round of the FIA World Endurance Championship; the six Hours of Silverstone, and the Club’s Tourist Trophy. It also comes three days after Scotsman Allan McNish received the Segrave Trophy itself from the Royal Automobile Club. McNish, now an Audi Sport ambassador, partnered Kristensen and Duval last season. ‘The Segrave Medal is not necessarily an annual award,’ explained Ben Cussons, Chairman of the Club’s Motoring Committee; ‘It is given at the Club’s discretion, in recognition of those whose work has played a fundamental role in helping the Segrave Trophy winner to achieve their goal.’ Dr Ullrich ushered in one of the most dramatic winning streaks that the German Uber-marque has known since the German manufacturer began its sports-prototype programme in 1999. As well as the DTM, he oversees Audi’s LMP programme and witnessed McNish, Kristensen and Duval score Audi’s 12th Le Mans 24 Hour race triumph last June. The trio also won last year’s coveted Tourist Trophy at Silverstone in 2013. ‘We were very aware of the team contribution to Allan’s achievement,’ added Cussons; ‘and as such wanted to recognise the wider accomplishment.’ Allan himself was also very eager to congratulate his team-mates; ‘I’ve enjoyed many seasons racing with Tom and last year with Loïc.
