ABC News discredits Davis television ad New York magazine also calls millionaire politician into question

The ABC News blog, which first broke the story of the scandal, has discredited millionaire politician Jack Davis’s television commercial, reporting that his ad “is not supported by the facts.” Another major media outlet, New York magazine, also disputes Davis’s claim that his ad was in response to television commercials being aired by Congressman Tom Reynolds.

“Here it is, straight from the source that broke the Mark Foley scandal – Jack Davis is lying,” said New York Republican State Committee Chairman Steve Minarik. “Davis’s viscous, personal attack on Congressman Reynolds should come off the air immediately.”

According to ABC News’ David Chalian, “Jack Davis, the wealthy Democratic challenger to NRCC Chairman Tom Reynolds in upstate New York, is launching a television ad today slamming Reynolds for not doing enough to stop Mark Foley. The opening claim that ‘Tom Reynolds knew that Congressman Mark Foley was a predator - going after a 16 year old boy,’ is not supported by the facts since Reynolds says he only learned of the ‘over friendly’ email to the former Page in the Spring 2006 and brought it to Speaker Hastert's attention.”

Minarik also noted that Davis was producing his now-discredited ad before Reynolds ever aired a spot. Davis had told the media otherwise.

“New York Magazine’s website first reported on October 9 that Davis’s commercial was in the works before Reynolds’ ad ever aired,” Minarik said. “Once again, Jack Davis has been caught in a lie. It’s not surprising, though, since he’s lied about his military record, lied about profiting from outsourcing, lied about his own foreign trade and lied about the activities of his political party. Jack Davis can’t seem to tell the truth about anything.”

New York magazine’s on-line edition reported on Monday: “Last week (Davis’s media guru Hank) Sheinkopf, was shouting into his cell phone to his clients upstate about the new anti- Reynolds commercials he's producing.” The article concludes “Davis's campaign will roll out an ad this week that will address the scandal.”

NEW YORK REPUBLICAN STATE COMMITTEE STEPHEN MINARIK Chairman

“Reynolds’ ad didn’t begin airing until Friday, which means that Jack Davis was producing his attack ad well in advance,” Minarik said. “The only thing Jack Davis was responding to was political opportunism.”

In addition to ABC News and the New York magazine story, Minarik released his own line-by-line analysis of Davis’s ad, which he concludes Davis’s commercial “is not only completely false, but a crass and over-the-top cheap, personal attack.”

“Jack Davis doesn’t want anyone to know that the only issue he’s taken a real position on is increasing taxes by 20 percent or more on Western New York families,” Minarik said. “This is cheap political theater at its worst. Jack Davis lied, but voters shouldn’t be fooled.”
