Today, humans communicate with IoT de- vices through visual, voice or tactile interfaces. More natural and organic interaction requires more sophisticated communication methods. This thesis explores seamless interfaces between human and IoT devices. In particular, I focus on using biological signals as the interface to directly connect with the smart surroundings. The work is partitioned in two parts. First, I present a wearable sensing system to estimate the thermal comfort level of the user by monitoring skin temperature, blood volume pressure and skin conductivity. This effort is a first step towards connecting room occupants and smart A/C devices, which can enable real-time adjustments of indoor conditions. In the second part of the thesis, brain signals are used as the interface to navigate in a Virtual Reality (VR) environment. We develop Sublime, a new concept of Steady-State Visually Evoked Potentials (SSVEP) based Brain-Computer Interface (BCI). In this technology, brain-computer communication is triggered by imperceptible visual stimuli integrated in the virtual scene and subliminal informa- tion is seamlessly'conveyed to a computer. By monitoring the elicited SSVEPs, the system is able to identify the gaze target of the user, thus enabling a hands-free menu navigation tool. In 2012, it was reported to have claimed more than 694,000 lives worldwide [1], [2]. When diagnosed early, survival from cancerous polyps can increase up to 90% [1]. Current reports estimate that one in 12 Australian males will develop colorectal cancer within their lifetime, one of the highest rates in the world [1]. Among screening methods, optical colonoscopy is widely used to diagnose and remove cancerous polyps. Although optical colonoscopy is an effective procedure for diagnosing colorectal cancer, there are many factors that affect the quality of this intervention [3]. Inspecting the whole colon surface in order to detect polyps and other lesions is challenging because haustral folds can hide lesions, the organ might deform, visibility can be reduced due to dirty lens, and also because challenges in operating the colonoscope could result in not visualising all the colon surface. An undesirable consequence is missing cancerous lesions, up to 33% according to recent publications [4], [5]. The aim of this research project is to enhance the quality of colon inspection by improving the quality and extent of the visual inspection of the internal colon surface.

An exciting possibility for compensating for loss of sensory function is to augment deficient senses by conveying missing information through an intact sense. Here we present an overview of techniques that have been developed for sensory substitution (SS) for the blind, through both touch and audition, with special emphasis on the importance of training for the use of such devices, while highlighting potential pitfalls in their design. One example of a pitfall is how conveying extra information about the environment risks sensory overload. Related to this, the limits of attentional capacity make it important to focus on key information and avoid redundancies. Also, differences in processing characteristics and bandwidth between sensory systems severely constrain the information that can be conveyed. Furthermore, perception is a continuous process and does not involve a snapshot of the environment. Design of sensory substitution devices therefore requires assessment of the nature of spatiotemporal continuity for the different senses. Basic psychophysical and neuroscientific research into representations of the environment and the most effective ways of conveying information should lead to better design of sensory substitution systems.
