Dear Friends:

April begins with not only the breath-taking beauty of new growth after months of drab decay, but also the breath-taking beauty of Holy Week and Easter. I think that’s a fair reflection of our worship together in these days, a secret garden of solace & delight, in which to find new life in our world subject to decay. The heart of this story is that of Jesus’ Good Friday cry of abandonment, ‘My God, my God why have you forsaken me’. Those who feel forsaken and abandoned in these times are particularly close to the experience of Easter.

Our questioning in loss within our Easter morning garden of remembrance may yet find us awakened from our grief by word of Christ’s compassion ‘Why are you weeping’, and graced to hear the call to know new life in our encounter with the risen life of Christ John 20. A moment of breath-taking beauty to all graced to witness the same. It is a joy seen through tears, and experienced through pain as our Lenten collect has it:-

‘Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified; mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace;’

May our days of waiting find answer in that incomprehensible encounter with Christ, our ‘Peace.. which passes all understanding’. The constant proclamation through all the years which patiently waits for our eyes to open to that secret garden of solace & delight, the blessing of our worship together, our Spirit given union ‘one with.. saints in heaven and on earth.’

All grace and blessing to you this Easter;-

Brin. Parish Priest at Haughley with Wetherden and Stowupland. www.achurchnearyou.com

STOWMARKET GROUP OF CHURCHES APRIL NEWSLETTER

Jesus read from the scriptures…… “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.” (Isaiah 61:1…..Luke 4:18)

My music knowledge is very limited. I don’t listen to much modern music, even worse, I’m ashamed to admit, that I don’t listen to much music at all, but there are some song lyrics that stick in your mind. One from my past is, “It’s Good News week” by Hedgehoppers Anonymous, and the first verse goes, “It’s good news week, someone’s dropped a bomb somewhere contaminating atmosphere and blackening the sky.” Words from the 1960’s but we can wonder how much has changed. This year we have become more aware of the increasing hostility between India and Pakistan. Wars continue and today there are twenty-eight countries either involved in war or who are experiencing armed conflicts within their borders. In 2019 it is estimated that one country is dropping an explosive with a strength you can hardly comprehend once every 12 minutes.

If I turn on the news, or read the paper, there is usually bad news facing me from persecution to fleeing refugees, from knife crime to people suffering with cancer, and of course we can’t forget Brexit (writing this before March 29th I wonder what will happen). So much bad news. Little good news, but then we often appear to be happier to hear bad news than good. One commercial newspaper that started out to give us good news was scrapped because there was no demand for it!

However, despite what we may think there is good news out there. We can be thankful to our local free magazines such as ‘In Touch’ as they carry us good news about our community and its people. We can rejoice at the work Michelle does with our own Monday Community Brew with more and more people coming to share in a time together. We can hear good news from Tools with a Mission where they are enabling people to earn a living and support themselves and their families. We can hear good news from Christian Aid which works with local partners and communities to fight injustice, respond to humanitarian emergencies, campaign for change, and help people claim the services and rights they are entitled to. We can look close at home and all around the world and there is good work going on to ensure good news does exist.

At Stowmarket we have been following a Lent Course entitled “Daring to see God now” and the first session was “The Good News of God.” Jesus grew up in a land occupied by the brutal soldiers of the Roman Imperial Army. He had no illusions about what the world was like, he lived in the real world and experienced life as a real person. But he had a message of good news a message that was taken around the world. He didn’t ignore the bad news around him but worked to change things and offered a better way of life for all.

This Easter we remember how Jesus died for us and rose again for us. He brought good news to the world and those who hear his news and act on it have their lives changed forever.

May you all receive and share with others the good news of our Lord and Saviour this Easter time.

Anne ( Secretary to Stowmarket Group of Churches.)

WETHERDEN VILLAGE HALL

It’s a little known fact that March is International Mirth Month! Laughter is the best medicine, and the poet Joseph Addison has said that “mirth is like a flash of lightning that breaks through a gloom of clouds, and glitters for a moment!” There were quite a few glittering moments for us on Friday 8th March, as we had eight tables in play at our Monthly Whist Drive, and there seemed to be much mirth in the air! The evening would not have been complete without merrily spinning our lottery drum, with the following coming up trumps:-

1st Maureen Davis £35 2nd Stacey Hawes £20

3rd Kerry Bradley £12.50

PLEASE NOTE:- Our next Whist Drive will be held at Wetherden Village Hall on FRIDAY 12h April commencing at 7.30pm - admission price only £1, Why not merrily come along???? Whether you are a regular player, haven't played for years or have always wanted to play Whist, you will be made very welcome in a warm and friendly atmosphere!

PALMERS BAKERY To commemorate 150 years of Palmers Bakery we have released the recollections of one of our former employees who will be affectionately known to many, Joan Grimwood, Office Clerk to Palmers (Haughley) Ltd from 1939 to 2001; sixty two years. It was recorded in 1994 and has never been released until today.

. . When we got our first lorry we were overjoyed, a five ton Bedford CBJ 86, Frank Green was chuffed and it was painted yellow, we loved it. We got another one second-hand one but when Barker washed it in Dagworth ford one day the mud had held it together and it fell apart there and then. In the end we had three Lorries one with a hoist carrying 15 tonne.

The War was filled with restrictions and forms, forms everywhere for everything. The Governor (William E G Palmer) would come up from the big house to the Bakery and then the Mill every day to sit with me in the office and go through papers; the men would shout “look sharp pick up a broom, governors coming”!

At the big house, The Ark (The White House) Violet Pleasance was housekeeper for Mr and Mrs Palmer and Mrs Robinson was the Cook. A young girl in the village, Ida Hart (Witherley) one of twins, went for an interview and got a job as a live in maid and looked after him well after Mrs Palmer died; she was one of the few that could get round him to do things. War time saw Master Tom and Master Roy go off to war and their elder brother Ronnie, who was in the ARP and ran his own coal and insurance business, run the business in their absence. He was married to Dolly who with the manpower shortage helped on bread rounds; she made me feel so welcome but Ronnie and she lived near separate lives together even though she adored him. We then had Mr Paddy and “Cocky” Pleasance join us on the coal lorries. Unlike the Bakery, the Mill was a reserved occupation so this meant the men weren’t called up. Ronnie was a nice chap and organised lots of the village events like Jubilee and Coronation celebrations in the village but he wanted more control of the business. He was told that his brothers were fighting to keep him and his country safe and they would be treated equally on their return but he wouldn’t listen; when Tom and Roy returned it reached a head and in 1947 after a meeting with lots of swearing and a huge argument he was refused and walked out, he never spoke to his father again. He took all the company books with him and they used to send me down to his house when he was out to have a rummage and get them back. They all thought I was going to leave the firm to work with him, he tried to persuade me, but no I felt the firm was my home and as a thank you they paid for me to go on holiday to Rhyl. They also gave me permanent loan of car BRT785 and Frank Green and Ted Chapman gave me lessons.

By the time the war was over we moved on to sell feeds, fertilisers, sprays, pet food and poisons. We also used to sell lime and as part of it we would have the farmers land analysed. I then had Uncle Fred Palmer, the governor’s brother come to help and he took over the bread accounts. He was an accountant at Pauls in Ipswich and his office boy was Sir John Mills the actor whom he clipped many times around the ears. He was a gentleman and you could time your watch by him, but he didn’t like ladies though but gradually came round to talk to me. He used to disappear off to and Ipswich once or twice a month for his club, tobacco and haircut. The Governor would say “he could be dead and we’d never know where the hell he is he just buggers off down there!” The two brothers lived till 1968 and died within months of each other, I think that’s what finished off the old Governor. I used to sit with him towards the end at Tom Palmers house, Haughley House where he laid, and read him the stocks and shares once a week in secret as he reminisced and said how he missed his brother and began to fail. His generosity knew no bounds when he gave money to our URC to be rebuilt and other good causes quietly; he always had bread left for people even if they couldn’t afford it. However on one occasion, Mrs Francis came to him in tears saying her mother had died and she couldn’t afford a wreath so he gave her money for it, the next week someone else died and she couldn’t afford the train fare, this went on for a few months till he became wise and sent her on her way when the same relation had died three times in a row! Till the day he died I was always referred to as Miss Joan and still have his Christmas tip envelope “To Miss Joan”.

The bakery had a direct telephone line, we were all Haughley 2 then 28, to the Mill and I used to go down to see the infamous Aunt Maud. She was the children’s Nanny and ran the Shop, she looked like an angel and was lovely but she wasn’t all the time. She loved her boys and they loved her; their wives when they met them didn’t know they had a mother it was only Aunt Maud this, Aunt Maud that as their parents, Mr and Mrs Palmer, didn’t live with their children. You upset her at your peril everyone was scared of her, she ruled the roost and she used to live in the Bakehouse upstairs for the fifty odd years she was with Palmers. She’d go to bed at night and lock the doors and being deaf no one could get in! Cont’d …...

12

….. Cont’d We had a thriving tea, sugar and sweet trade which virtually ended because Aunt Maud would give out the tea, sugar and sweets to anyone with a kindly face and say “don’t worry about the coupons dear dratted things a waste of time here’s a quarter of tea” so… we never had any coupons to exchange for more; how the Governor shouted at her for that, ‘Oh don’t fuss Tute’ she’d say “rationing means nothing to me” and ignore him!...... To be continued

Notes from the Parish Council meeting held in March 2019

Elections: Elections will be held in May for all 7 places on the council, so please consider standing, and helping to shape the future of Wetherden. There are lots of changes which will affect the village, and a strong parish council can make a difference, being consulted on all local planning applications, and improving the facilities in the village for all. Nomination forms and further information can be obtained from me. The closing date for applications (which have to be handed in, not posted) is 4pm on Wednesday 4 April. To be eligible you have to live or work in Wetherden, or within 3 miles.

HAUGHLEY PARISH COUNCIL REPORT FROM A MEETING HELD WEDNESDAY, MARCH 20 2019

There is a lot going on at the moment, so apologies for this somewhat lengthy report.

The Chairman thanked Parish Councillors and the Clerk for their stirling work, which enabled the seamless continuity of Parish Council business during his 9-week absence. Perhaps he should go away more often … ( only kidding! ).

Public Forum. Suffolk Constabulary MUST, with limited resources, follow national policing priorities, which may not match local concerns. PC to send a written response.

Community Litter Pick March 1. 6 volunteers collected several bags of rubbish, an old car tyre and a discarded broken and rusty child’s bicycle, which was hanging from a tree adjacent to the Playing Field! The next litter pick is May 11 – who knows what we will collect then ….

County Councillor Andrew Stringer. Confirmed SCC’s 2019/20 budget and 3.99% council tax increase. Overspend is reducing, but concern was expressed about where £10.1m savings are being made. School transport is now an “opt-in” service: www.suffolkonboard.com/optin Anyone having difficulty with transport applications are urged to contact Councillor Stringer direct [email protected]

District Councillor Rachel Eburne. 2 extra PCSOs funded by MSDC. Locality Funding Awards update given: several projects have been supported in Haughley. MSDC has adopted Mendlesham and Debenham Neighbourhood Plans. The plans MUST now be considered, as a legal requirement, when MSDC considers any planning applications made in those parishes.

Planning 1) Applications reviewed: DC/19/00794: Alterations to Listed building Walnut Tree Manor: supported DC/19/00901: 15 Old Street: Householder Planning Application: no comment 2) Decisions by MSDC: DC/19/00174: 4 Denny Close, single storey extension for disabled use. GRANTED DC/19/00392: 10B Turner Lane, single storey rear extension GRANTED

Haughley Neighbourhood Plan Submission Version. Formal 6-week Consultation Update: 12 responses were received and considered by the Working Group. Their deliberations were reported to and unanimously supported by the PC. All documents have now been sent to the External Examiner. We have done all we can, so all we can do now is wait.

Community Led Housing Project. This project, if supported, would have to be channelled through a Charitable Trust. Community Led Housing has the potential to bring long -term benefits to the Parish, but much more work is needed. We will get back to you when we have more to say.

Gallowsfield Wood Committee. Ongoing work to maintain and improve the site will require volunteer help and will be publicised. The Locality Award funded earth water closet (toilet!) is now officially open for business (so to speak). Initially the facility will be open permanently and its usage will be kept under review. Cont’d ……..

The Cricket Committee. Volunteers continue the ongoing work to maintain and improve the site. All play equipment on the Cricket is to be added to the King George V Playing Field independent Play Equipment inspection schedule. See BBQ info below.

Tree report received from Councillor Edginton: his recommendations below were endorsed by the PC: Removal of diseased chestnut tree and stump from The Green. Removal of stump in front of Old Village House. 3 suitable new trees in Old Street to be planted. The Green to be left open for “Village Activities”.

Palmers Bakery: 150 years celebration. Planned for Saturday, June 29. A letter from Kenneth and Keiron Palmer gave context to the plans for a Mini Funday to help celebrate their special anniversary. Having read the letter it looks like there is going to be a lot going on with something for everyone and we are told that by sheer chance that on the same day in 1367 a Bakehouse was first mentioned in the market place of ‘Hagala’ (Haughley). How cool is that? The planned Funday and other outlined celebratory plans are supported unanimously by the PC, subject (of course) to all health and safety and legal requirements being met. Roll on June 29.

Health Walks: Councillor G Brown. An initiative to invite Parishioners to join together and enjoy short walks in and around the Parish is being planned with the support of One Life Suffolk. This is the central Suffolk organisation, which is promoting Health Walks and trains people to led them. Walks will typically be 1-3 miles, and will always be within the capabilities of the group who turn up on the day. Hopefully walks will begin in April. More information available soon, so get your walking shoes out and at the ready by the front door.
