Ely College Newsletter July 2018

From the Principal This edition of the newsletter will be sent home on the 190th (final) school day of the academic year 2017/18. ‘Making every day count’ is a slightly tired cliché, but it has certainly been on my mind recently. A successful school is restless in its pursuit of experiences and progress, and I truly hope that parents and students feel that this year has been one of growth and opportunity. Once again, the Ely College wins huge array of recent activities covered in this newsletter should serve as a clear example of what we mean when we talk about ‘extending the boundaries of learning’. If you feel your child hasn’t taken ‘Secondary School of hold of enough of these opportunities, the summer is a good time to have that discussion about the Year 2018’ award seizing every opportunity for experience that life has to offer. Yr 10 Work Experience

Our Yr 10 students took part in one week’s work experience from 2-6 July.

The students outdid themselves this year and performed outstandingly and were a credit to themselves and the college. The response from students and employers has been extremely positive. Students found that they were able to use the skills they already have and learnt some new ones along the way. Employers have commented on their willingness to learn and participate. Some employers have said they would not hesitate to employ the students in the future.

Spanish Trip

A key focus for learning a foreign language is to provide students with a life skill they can use forever. During our recent six-day trip to San Lorenzo del

Escorial (Madrid), we shared a hostel, meals and activities with 60 Spanish young people - this made students realise just how important it is to get to know a different culture, and provided the motivation for them to keep learning the language. High rope adventures, summer swimming pools, evening karaoke, a 5 km walk in the mountains, an escape room or Real

Madrid stadium tour were just some of the elements for the perfect experience, and the farewell tears proved us right!

We are already working on next year’s trip…

News and achievements from Etheldreda House

The end of the year is upon us and I am proud to look back over the last year and the achievements our students have made. There have been more achievements this term to celebrate.

A number of our Etheldreda students have competed in the junior maths challenge this term achieving either bronze, silver or gold. Tymek Nieodniczansk and Erin Vanhoutte have qualified for an extra challenge, extremely well done to all involved and keep up the hard work!

I want to briefly tell you about one of our students, Eloise Holgate (year 7), who I feel lives up to the Etheldreda ethos of ‘being the best version of yourself, to always try hard and to have a positive attitude’.

Last year, Eloise auditioned for full-time ballet schools for a place in year 7 and was unsuccessful (missing out by the skin of her teeth!), instead of giving up she decided that she had to work harder, to get better so she could go and live her dream. Not only does she dance every night, but she gets up early every morning to do core conditioning and strengthening work.

In September, her ballet teacher suggested she also did the lessons of the grade above, so she was doing more ballet and hopefully increase the rate of improvement. So she began studying both syllabus simultaneously. In January, she took her grade 4 ballet exam and in February she did the grade 5 (alongside students in years 9 and 10). Not only did she get distinctions in both exams she achieved the highest scores in both classes.

In April, she successfully auditioned for an associate programme, which delivers intensive vocational training every other weekend out of Rambert’s studios in Twickenham, London. So she’ll be doing 7+ hours on Sunday’s next year on top of the 15 hours a week she currently does.

As if this wasn’t enough, she has successfully auditioned for a space in The National Youth Ballet 2018 season. This is a 10 day, residential summer programme, cumulating in performances in both Birmingham and Sadlers Wells, London. We wish Eloise every success this summer and in her future development in ballet.

NEW HOUSE LEADERS A huge congratulations to Abbie Staines and Wesley Jordan who have been successful in being chosen to be the new Etheldreda house leaders for September 2018-July 2019. They delivered an excellent speech at the presentation awards held at Ely Cathedral on Thursday 5th July about their experiences within the house over the last year.

In addition, I took a number of student volunteers to the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough School Games Summer Festival where they led a range of activities including, rounders, cricket and Change4Life. Some of this was working with primary school children, as well as umpiring competitive games between qualifiers for rounders. The students were fantastic, showing great enthusiasm and leadership skills making a positive contribution to the overall running of the games.

Etheldreda students involved were:  Maisie Grey  Makenzie Hanslip  Phoebe Wind  Ellie Watson  Ellouisa Bennet  Kieran Meacham  Jordan Blunt  Lucas Gibbs  Edward Suswain  Jack Winters  Abbie Staines  Jess Staines  Emily McLeish  Livy Wilber

I want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support over this academic year, it is so critical that we all work together as a team to ensure that each student is able to fulfil their potential. From all of us in Etheldreda house, we wish you all a lovely summer break and look forward to welcoming you back in September.

Welcome to the Franklin House Page

Looking back over the past academic year, I am again struck by how much Franklin have given me to be happy about and how far our students have come - though perhaps a few have added to the growing collection of grey hairs! Ellie B, Harry B, Jodie B, Katherine C, Zak D, Ella D, Nathaniel H, Haydon H, Charlotte J, Naomi K, Jonathan K, Sam L, Emma L, Hannah M, Megan M, Callum N, Anna O, Henry O, Jessie P, Lauren R, Jacob S, Hanna S, Anna S, Charlie T, Stevie T, Hayley W, Daniele Z, Katelyn W, Sharif Z.

Huge congratulations to you all, it is no mean feat to make it to Presentation Evening. You should feel very proud of yourselves.

However, I want all Franklin students and parents to know that whether or not your name is on that list, I am proud of you all. Everyone has made progress in one way or another this year and that makes me very proud to be your Senior Tutor. Looking through progress reports, thinking back to meetings with parents and 1-1 chats we’ve had – you are a fantastic bunch of students and parents. I’m glad to work with you all.

It feels that if I blink it is transition time again. We had a lovely two days getting to know our new recruits, they all made lovely first impressions. In the list below we have a wonderful variety of personalities. We have students who are sporty, funny, excellent writers, determined, polite, charming, creative, focused and hardworking individuals. These aren’t my words; they are the words of the Year 6 teachers that Mrs Haworth met. We look forward to getting to know you all in September, welcome to you all…

With Sports Day cancelled the question of who will win the House cup hangs in the air even more than it did a week ago. I don’t know who will win, but I certainly feel like a winner looking back over everything we have achieved: from raising money at charities day to having the most PLEDGE points for Participation and Excellence across all the houses. House Cup or not, Franklin will always be the winning house for me! Wishing you all a wonderful Summer.

Welcome to the Scott House Page

Has it really been a year? Doesn’t time fly when you are doing so much! There are simply too many things to mention but a sample of the wonderful things we have achieved is below. My highlight, though, was welcoming the year 6 students to college during transition week. A big ‘thank you’ to all the staff and students for making them feel so welcome.

Dorset Walk – I’d like to make a special mention to all of our students who went on the Dorset Walk, raising money and awareness for Bowel Cancer Research. What an amazing event, organized brilliantly by the staff. I am a little sore and sunburnt myself but I loved every minute of it (well not every minute…). The students who took part across the college were incredible. Scott House staff attending included myself, Catherine Seymour and Nikki Pritchett. I’d also like to thank the Principal, Richard Spencer, who recognizes the value and impact of events like this and sees the huge benefits they bring to our college. Without that support it simply won’t take place or be in any way as impactful as it has been.

CMAT Outdoor Challenge - The inaugural CMAT Outdoor Challenge involved 3 members of the Scott House team. Heather Fleming (S-EWA), Ella Simper (S-CSM), Lucas Gibbs, Henry Olley and Mr Waters (Senior Tutor) who organized the event. It was a fantastic event that we are looking to expand going forward next year to incorporate more teams and involve other Houses. Our students were an absolute credit to the college and their efforts throughout were immense. The students were involved in an array of camp craft activities, canoeing, orienteering and cooking in the outdoors. Ely finished in 3rd place and we will be hoping to do even better next year.

Arthur Rank Hospice visit – Monday 9th July From Left – Jessica Gillett-Woodley (S-KAG), Nikki Pritchett (SSA Scott House), Caitlin McCrone (S-JCG), Heather Fleming (S-EWA), Ella Simper (S-CSM), Lennon Wrighton (S-KAG), Neve Moll (S-IBU), Alfie Bennett (S-EWA), Mr J Waters (Senior Tutor – Scott House)

Students from Scott House visited the Arthur Rank Hospice to donate the money we raised from our charities day. Thanks goes to Bec Beattie, Community Fundraiser for Arthur Rank, who gave us a tour of the Hospice. Students were able to understand the importance of the Hospice and how our money will go to helping the families of those suffering from a terminal illness. It was a really powerful visit and one which will be remembered. Here is a link to the full report on the Arthur Rank Hospice website: http://www.arhc.org.uk/news-item.asp?$=1300&o

Best of Luck to all our Year 11’s - A special message from Scott House to all of our Year 11’s who have finished their GCSE exams. For so many of you, the hard work of the past few weeks will surely pay off. I would also like to thank the staff who have given up time during the holidays and weekends to run revision sessions for Year 11.

Scott House – PLEDGE awards - A number of students in Scott House have completed their awards at Bronze and Silver Pledge Awards.

Everyone in Scott House is incredibly proud of their achievements.

To those students in Year 10 from Scott House who took part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award. Our next trip is in September and students will be close to completing the award.

Melody Burton (Year 7) was one of nine skaters representing Cambridgeshire Artistic Roller Skating Club at the Retroskate Rookie Gala in Great Yarmouth on 8th July, skating in both solo and duo events Stuart Buzer S-ZCH achieving a Gold Award for UK Mathematical Trust Adam Brumby S-ZCH for continued excellence at Cambridge United Academy Lewis Simper S-ENO for being selected for Cambridge United Oscar Barter S-BTH for organizing and taking part in a 100mile bike ride for St John Ambulance Charlotte Nash S-BTH “I would just like to tell you that I have been given a place at Cambridge United Women's FC, where we will be playing against teams such as Tottenham and West Ham. We have to train 3 days a week for 2 hours, this includes training in the gym and on the pitch; friendlies against other teams, match and pitch analysis and nutrition and body conditioning advice. I am very proud and excited about playing for CUWFC, however, I will never stop working hard until I reach England but even then, I will fight to be the best women's player in the world.”

Please do inform your child’s Tutor if your son/daughter has done something that deserves to be mentioned.

Message to staff - We have some goodbyes to staff this summer. I would like to thank them personally for all their hard work and dedication over the course of the year and their time at the college. They have worked incredibly hard as tutors to ensure that each student is at the center of everything they do.

Iain Mann – We all wish you well in your new role in Scotland. I hope it is another memorable chapter in your adventure. All the best! Jennifer Coggins – Not disappearing totally but you will be missed in Scott House. Best of luck in 6th form, it won’t be the same. Thank you for all your efforts!

Ella Watkins – Congratulations for the impending arrival of baby! We will miss you lots and lots when you are not here. Such a fabulous tutor, I know S-EWA will be very sad come September when you are not there.

I would also like to mention Debbie Olaifa, who covers for S-ZCH. She has been a fantastic addition to the team.

Scott House staff have been amazing at organizing and running events in the college and those people also deserve a mention. Rob Hancock organizing another memorable Battlefields trip, so important to our understanding of the sacrifice made by so many for our freedoms. Emily Hill and Ian Burke for another successful Geography trip to Italy, an amazing experience for all those students as well as the Year 10 trips to Hunstanton. Catherine Seymour and Kolade Agboke for their running of the Shakespeare schools festival as well. Also, a big thankyou to Bethea Thompson for taking students on a wonderful trip to The Neasden Temple, an example of how we can show the importance of understanding other cultures and traditions.

A special mention goes to Nikki Pritchett for her continued hard work as the House SSA on top of the amazing work she has done organising work experience for year 10 students. It was such an incredible experience for the students and I would like to thank all those staff who went to visit their students on placement.

Have a wonderful Summer!

Welcome to the Turing House Page

Although a cliché, it really is hard to believe that the academic year ends this week. In assembly last week, we listened to ‘Circle of Life’ and reflected that there is a big change for every student at the end of an academic year and the start of another.

Most obviously that change came for year 11 as they wrapped up exams and then enjoyed their prom which saw them arrive in splendid style and glorious sunshine. There were many fine cars and some rather unusual modes of transport too. It was interesting that the more unusual ones mirrored the students’ interests outside of college.

All year 11 students should be able to have a relaxing summer. They will be streaming in on 23rd August to collect their results and get advice about the implications for their college choices if they need it. We wish them all well.

The other obvious change is going to be for the year 6 students coming up. We had a great 2-day induction programme for them which included time in their (vertical) tutor groups. As always, Turing students rose to the occasion by making them extremely welcome and earning themselves some Pledge Points in the process! Every year students say that their biggest worry is that they will get lost; we haven’t lost one yet! On another evening parents came to meet staff and attend a presentation whilst year 6 and 7 students attended a disco. Much fun was had and, to their credit, not one piece of litter was left on the floor. We love tidy students!

With those two big changes, it would be easy to minimise the change for the other years but, actually, it is a big change for all years. Year 8s have chosen their paths for next year and become Key Stage 4 students. In English and maths they will be set for the first time and may meet up with new students and new teachers. Very exciting and, for some, a little nerve wracking. We are mindful of this and will be supporting.

Year 9s always begin to realise how near to GCSEs they are when they reach year 10 - the work is so focused and they have mock exams in an exam environment. It is a time when they can show maturity within their form groups and around the college by showing exemplar behaviour. It feels very much like a change of gear.

Year 10s who are becoming Year 11 have no idea of how quickly the year will pass. It isn’t that they are not told frequently – it is too hard for them to believe! Lots of opportunities will be coming their way in the form of Session 6 groups which will include subject support and support and guidance also from Mrs Rachael Mustill. Year 11 students remain members of their Houses but have additional support to help them along the pathway to examinations, college choices and career options.

As we move on, we have selected two House Representatives who are Lucy Samalionis and Nathan Simpson. Happily, it didn’t take too much persuasion because it was widely recognized that the two of them have real leadership potential. Anyone who heard their presentations in the Cathedral on Presentation Evening will already know them to be brilliant ambassadors for Turing. They, and other Turing students were also outstanding guides on the Year 6 Induction. If you ring the House phone when there is no-one in the office, you’ll hear their dulcet tones!

Early in the new term students will select Form Representatives; it is vital to have an active student council so that students have a genuine ‘voice’ in the college. Please encourage!

Everyone here in Turing would like to thank you for all the support you show the college and wish you a great summer.

Welcome to the Year 11 Matters Newsletter July 2018

Prom was amazing and incredibly well supported. Thank you to everyone involved.

Just a reminder that Results Day is on Thursday 23rd August. College will be open 09:30 – 12:00 for students to collect their results. If your child is unable to pick up his/her results, they can nominate someone to do this for them. This person should have a signed letter from your child confirming this arrangement. Envelopes not collected will be posted home. Staff will be on hand to congratulate and support students.

Thanks to all students who donated both uniform and books that they no longer require. These will make a huge difference to students who will benefit from these in the coming months. If there are still uniform and books out there that are no longer needed by students, they can be dropped off at the reception or brought in on results day.

Finally, please remember that there will be a GCSE Certificate Presentation Evening on 6th December. It is a lovely evening recognising the successes of all students and I look forward to seeing many students and parents at the event.

I wish all students well as they move on from Year 11 to the exciting stages that follow. Should any of them need any further post-16 advice or references writing, please do not hesitate to contact me. I am very interested in the good things that so many of the year group will go on to do.

Welcome to the Bishop Laney Sixth Form Pages

As the term draws to a close, we are grateful for the time to reflect on what has been an excellent year for Bishop Laney Sixth Form. Our year 12 transition Attendance reminder! students look forward to receiving their GCSE results in English and Maths next Any Bishop Laney 6th form month, and our departing Year 13s await their results to take them to the next student who is off ill, must stage. For many, this will be a continuation of their education, either to contact the Bishop Laney University or into high-quality apprenticeships, and we wish them all the best team on the morning of whilst we await the outcomes. It is also the time when Norwich football their absence. students start to enter their pre-season training and the year 11 coming Tel: 01353 652818 through are in college working with the coaches and boys. Email: [email protected] Looking Forward We continue to receive interest in our study programmes for 2018 from students throughout East Cambridgeshire. This continued interest combines with an initial rise in applications to give us an increase of approximately 70% on applications at the same time last year. Our programmes for next year are taking shape and promise an array of opportunities combined with high-quality subject provision; work experience, business mentoring, PLEDGES+ days, mental health and wellbeing training, and the opportunities to stand for election as ‘Course Reps’, and later in the year, Student Council. All of which contribute to the enriching experience which we are proud to offer.

6th Form Away Day We held our first student-led away day at the end of June. This provided an opportunity for students from both year groups to celebrate their achievements and have a great time in the enjoyable surroundings of Alton Towers. Planned by a group of business studies students as part of their Event Management unit, the day was a great success with students, even at this stage of the year, forming new friendships and creating new memories as they go their separate ways over the summer and beyond. It’s an event we will be keen to repeat and expand on in the years to come, so watch this space for details of next year’s away day…

Pledges+ Mock Interview Day The June Pledges Day saw Bishop Laney students in year 12, continuing into year 13, working with a range of business personnel from the local area to develop some of their application and interview skills. What a fantastic opportunity for the students to benefit from the expertise of business men and women from the local area. Prior to the day students had to complete their CV. Students took part in two mock interviews,

PAGES 26, 27

and gained feedback on their CV and interviews from the two business personnel they worked with. The feedback from the students and volunteers was overwhelming. A huge thanks goes to the Cathedral for their support in organising and running the day.

Peterborough Skills Show This half term has been incredibly busy. Following the mock interview day, students visited the Peterborough Careers Fair where they could meet and discuss careers with over 150 businesses, across all sectors. The day saw over 6,000 students visit Peterborough Arena to glean information on application processes, University courses and apprenticeships.

Wishing you all a lovely summer break.
