AP SUMMER READING LOG DOCUMENT

READ in English ’s de Bello Gallico (Books 1,6,7) and Vergil’s The Aeneid (Books 1,2,4,6,8,12) The English translation books you are required to purchase and read: -Hammond, Carolyn, tr. In the boxes below, -you have to make a reading log entry for every 8-10 pages you read in Gallic Wars, for every 13-15 pages you read in The Aeneid. -record the Book (GW or AEN), the book page numbers you read, -record the date you did the reading, -write 4-5 summarizing sentences about what you read (including a few phrase quotes from the book), -look for AP THEME in the section you read, one of 3… DIVINITY – gods, mythology, fate LEADERSHIP -valued Roman virtue (more info below) Gravitas "Gravity" Sense of the importance of matter at hand, responsibility and earnestness. "Dutifulness" More than religious piety; a respect for the natural order socially, politically, and religiously. Includes the ideas of patriotism and devotion to others. Veritas "Truthfulness" Honesty in dealing with others. Fides "Confidence" Good faith in all commercial and governmental dealings. Pietas "Piety, Dutifulness" People paying honor to the gods. "Courage" Especially of leaders within society and government. Spiritual Authority,-sense of one's social standing, built up through experience, Pietas, and Industria.

If there is one of these 3 AP THEMEs in what you read, in the reading log entry for this reading section.. (1) say which theme: DIVINITY – LEADERSHIP – VIRTUE/then the actual virtue from the list, (2) give specific text reference and explain what it is: background or information about it, then (3) explain why it is used here or what it adds to the story.
