JULY 2017 2 lahabana. com magazine JULY 2017 3 EDITORIAL If you’re in Cuba in July, sure, it’s great to walk the streets of Old Havana, or visit frozen-in-time Trinidad, or take a swim in the crystal-clear waters of the Island’s many beaches… But the real place to be this month is around 800 kilometers east of Havana: Santiago de Cuba. The Festival Internacional del Caribe Fiesta del Fuego (July 3 -9), a weeklong colorful celebration of Caribbean cultures, will be dedicated this year to the small island of Bonaire, which will bring their dances, Simidan and Bari. Join the Santiagueros in the Serpent Parade and the Burning of the Demon, which kicks off and marks the end of the festival, respectively. Then take a break because you’re going to need to recharge your batteries to continue partying. From July 21-27, another vibrant and contagious event takes place: the Santiago de Cuba Carnival, which attracts crowds of locals and visitors alike as no other carnival in Cuba. The entire city takes part in this celebration, as people of all ages dance down the steep streets of Santiago de Cuba to the rhythm and sounds of congas and the Chinese horn. FEB 2017 4 lahabana. com magazine So, whether during the Fire Festival or the Carnival (or both), be sure to join the locals, don’t be a sideliner! If you can’t make it to Santiago de Cuba, though, you still have the Varadero Baila International Salsa Dancers Festival (July 7-11) which takes place at the famous resort town of Varadero. Dance, sun and beach all in one. Back in Havana, there is no slowing of activities either: workshops on Cuban folkloric dances (July 3-15), the Art at La Rampa Crafts Fair (throughout the month), the Aquelarre Comedy Festival (July 3-9), CIRCUBA, the third oldest circus festival in the world (throughout the month), plus the usual suspects: art exhibitions, musical theater, ballet, performances by popular bands, and so much more. This is how an old popular song goes, singing about the great times, joy and the son Cubano, which pervade that most eastern part of Cuba. It’s undisputedly true that almost always when you talk about Cuba, what you are really talking about is Havana. The eastern part of Cuba, el Oriente, has been able to remain almost virgin, far from prying eyes, away from fashions and trends, very comfortable with its own traditions, its rich culture and its unique essentially Caribbean identity. For that reason, and from days gone by, a common dream among Havana residents is to spend their vacations in Oriente, lulled by the son of the hills, the pig roasting on a spit over burning coals, cooling off with a really cold beer, never as delicious as when you drink it under the blazing sun in Oriente. Now that Cuba has become the most desired destination of millions of tourists, as if recently discovered, Oriente remains a mystery that can be unveiled day by day. The conventional tourist lands in Havana or Varadero, goes to the beach, strolls along the colonial streets of Old Havana, jaunts over to Trinidad and maybe to Las Terrazas or Viñales Valley in Pinar del Río, and that’s the end of the trip. With any luck, this tourist may have seen fifteen percent of the Island. But he or she hasn’t seen anything of its people or culture; they haven’t even come close. JULY 2017 10 lahabana. com magazine In comparison with Havana, which prides itself in being a cosmopolitan city, Oriente is all about country life without being exactly bucolic; it is a land where its folks say “Buenos Días” to you and smile at anyone they meet. That’s a custom which amazes Habaneros, almost scaring them. Oriente is populated by men and women who measure the passage of time by the length of a palm tree’s shadow; they are never in a hurry to get anywhere and are always calm enough to stop for a good coffee. In fact, the area grows some of the best coffee since the days when the French colonists arrived, after being expelled from Haiti after the first revolution in the Americas. Recorded Cuban history actually started in Oriente, on Bariay Beach on the northern coast of today’s Holguín Province. That’s where the Grand Admiral of the Ocean Sea Christopher Columbus landed in 1492. As he knelt in the sand, overcome by the soft light of dawn, he confessed: This is the most beautiful land human eyes have ever seen. And to the south lies the city to which the poet would sing: It is Santiago de Cuba, be not amazed by anything! Santiago has been praised for being hospitable and at one time was the capital of Cuba, bathed by the white-capped waves and the sea breezes of the Caribbean. Except for a few rare examples, you won’t find any of those tall buildings casting their heavy shadows there and the sky reigns supreme over the city and its people who are proud of their history which they have raised with their hands. Listen to them speak: it sounds like they are singing because they carry music in their souls and in their gaze they dream songs. The territory occupied by the municipality of Limonar borders on Matanzas and Cárdenas to the north, Jovellanos to the east, Pedro Betancourt and Unión de Reyes to the south, and Unión de Reyes, Matanzas and Madruga to the west, in the province of Mayabeque. It occupies 3,8 % of the territory of the province of Matanzas. It has a territorial extension of 449,07 Km2. Its population is 26704 inhabitants, 13262 females and 13442 males. The main population settlements are: Limonar (municipal capital), Horacio Rodríguez, Fructuoso Rodríguez, Triumvirate, Santa Ana, Jesús María, Las Marías and San Francisco. The territory is located at 220 57' 04'' north latitude and 810 25' 38'' west longitude and is formed topographically by a relief that goes from flat to hillock. The predominant soils are of the clayey type, derived from the limestone rocks of the upper Cretaceous. Among the deepest soils are the famous black soils of the Guamacaro valley of the palmarito type. In the northern elevations of the Guamacaro valley and in the Las Nieves savannah the vegetation is that of cuabal, typical of the shallow serpentine soils where the cana palm abounds. The soil is mainly red ferrallitic in 70% and some brown, where there is a wide range of vegetation and their lands are devoted primarily to the production of small fruits, vegetables, grains, fruit trees and livestock development. The predominant climate is warm, the average annual temperature is 25-300 and in the cold months it is 210 C.

La provincia fue evaluada de Bien con 82,98 puntos. El municipio de Jovellanos fue evaluado de regular. Las principales deficiencias se detectaron en los Subprogramas de Hortalizas y Condimentos Frescos, Manejo Agroecológico de Plagas, Uso y Manejo del Agua y Suelos y Abonos Orgánicos. Con relación al Autoabastecimiento Municipal, se pudo apreciar que en sentido general todos los municipios lo están trabajando. Se analizó el mes de enero alcanzándose como promedio a nivel provincial 14 libras percapitas. Los municipios con mayor dificultad en la implementación son: Cárdenas con 4 libras percapitas y Matanzas con 5,6 libras percapitas. PRINCIPALES DEFICIENCIAS DETECTADAS: 1. En el Subprograma de Hortalizas fueron evaluadas 20 Unidades de regular en los municipios de: (3 en Unión de Reyes, 4 en Limonar, 1 en Perico, 1 en Jovellanos, 2 en Los Arabos, 1 en Martí, 1 en Cárdenas, 5 en Pedro Betancourt, 1 en Calimete y 1 en Ciénaga de Zapata). 2. El Subprograma de Hortalizas y Condimentos Frescos fue evaluado de regular en los municipios de: Unión de Reyes, Cárdenas, Pedro Betancourt y Ciénaga de Zapata y de mal en el municipio Jovellanos. 3. The analysis and reflection are derived from the experience obtained during more than 15 years of field work, with tools that promote participation and interdisciplinarity in the analyses, by the research line of Agricultural and Sustainable Local Development of the Pastures and Forages Research Station Indio Hatuey, in agro- productive entities, municipalities and localities, with the contribution of their key actors. For the study the information regarding the officials, workers and decision makers’ perceptions were considered; statistical documents associated to the agricultural productions of the territories were also analyzed. As a result it was observed that the established institu- tionality should be reformed, because it slows down the concretion of the transformation projects and actions. From this, it can be concluded that the knowledge and understanding about the analyzed actors’ perceptions at municipal-local level remarkably limit that the projection and implementation of the changes are favorably visualized.

No book or photograph can prepare you for the enormity of what you see and feel upon arrival in Havana. The architecture, the landscape, the food, the music, the art and the people are all exceptional. To experience Havana and see, firsthand, remnants of what it was before the Cuban Revolution, what it is today, and to catch a glimpse of the gradual changes the entire country is undergoing is breathtaking, enchanting and, at the same time, haunting.

    Media release, 31st August 2016 John Cale is coming to Basel: Vis-à-vis with rock music legends thanks to the partnership between the Fondation Beyeler and Bayer John Cale, charismatic founding member of the unforgettable avant-garde band The Velvet Underground that was associated with Andy Warhol, extraordinary solo musician and music producer, is performing an exclusive concert with his trio at the Fondation Beyeler on October 22 at 6pm. Exceptional art experiences are a tradition at the Fondation Beyeler. Why does fine art exert such a powerful fascination? Why are museums so popular? Doubtless because they permit a direct personal relationship to art, face to face and with no filter. When we visit a museum, we totally possess the artworks we see for a few moments in time; we immerse ourselves in them and they arouse emotions and questions in us, generating lively dialogs spanning different centuries and cultures. The close, intimate, sometimes demanding and always exciting experiencing of art in a museum has inspired the Fondation Beyeler and Bayer to hold a lose series of concerts in which a legendary musician can be experienced close up, just as artworks are. Last year Patti Smith and her band performed an acoustic set at the Fondation Beyeler and this year it is the turn of the rock legend John Cale. After studying at Goldsmiths College in London, the unconventional, headstrong Welshman was awarded a Leonard Bernstein scholarship thanks to the intervention of Aaron Copland, the contemporary US composer, and worked with major figures on the American avant-garde scene such as La Monte Young and John Cage.
