Fencing is on Point with Life’s Lessons If you witnessed people wearing chest plates and funny hats whilst battling with swords, you might believe you were at the Renaissance Faire or watch- ing a Monty Python movie, but it was actually a group of fifth graders engaged in a fencing class in the Sussex Renew gymnasium. The brainchild of Mr. Constantino, the school’s chief innovation officer, fencing’s arrival at Sussex Renew has opened yet another new creative avenue for our students to develop the mental and physical skills necessary to lead a healthy life into adulthood. “Mentally, it requires the cultivation of focus, patience and strategy,” said Alex van den Bergh, a fencing coach brought Foiled again: Yu Han Ren and Kimberly Torres square off in practice session to Sussex Renew by Mr. Constantino. “Physically, it develops fine motor skills. ation in front of you and be able to adapt and change.” You must be able to understand the situ- Students were excited about the opportunity to try a sport not seen in many New Jersey schools. “It was a great experience,” Josue Torres said. “It was fun even though I got stabbed a couple of times,” Alan Matias said. The Artists in Education Res- idency Grant Program ap- proved Sussex Renew’s latest application and the school will receive an award of $6,000 to fund a 20-day teaching artist residency for the 2017-18 school year. This year’s grant allowed artist Kit Sailer to work with Mr. Alvarez and 6th and 8th grade students to replace the “Imagine” painting in the schoolyard with a brand new student-created music-themed mural.
