Your Superintendent desires to submit the following report:

I. SUPERINTENDENT/ADMINISTRATION

A. Camden High School Town Meeting Compensation

It is recommended that permission be granted for the following individuals to work Thursday, September 10, 2009, for registration of attendees at the Town Meeting held at Camden High School on the proposed new school:

Ms. Beverly Drew-Lewis $26.33 per hour x 3.5 $92.16 Ms. Diane Wilson $24.28 per hour x 3.5 $84.98

B. Partnership

It is recommended that permission be granted to partner with Bonsall School, Virtua Hospital- Camden, New Jersey and The Liberty Park Neighborhood Association in the following activities, effective November 2, 2009:

Below The Rim Basketball Program to service 150-200 students, ages 6-16, Wednesdays 4-8 pm and on Saturdays 9am-5pm, November 2009 – April 2010.

Big Brothers & Big Sisters to service Grades K-1 in a weekly 100 Book Challenge reading initiative and mentoring program, November 2009 – April 2010.

Second Step Violence Prevention Program – Grade 3 students will be provided weekly lessons November-March via interns and volunteers, according to Board policy, to equip them with positive decision making strategies, November 2009 – March 2010.

New Jersey Family Care and Medicare Health Services – to service all grade levels and provide the opportunity for parents to enroll in healthcare offerings. Field trips, Thanksgiving Baskets and Toys For Tots will be provided November 2009 – April 2010.

C. Donation of Tickets:

It is recommended that the Camden Board of Education accept the donation of 500 tickets to Adventure Aquarium, Camden, for Wednesday, October 28, 2009.

Adventure Aquarium will be the subject of a promotional production video for public broadcast on October 28, and students will be used as background for the taping. Each student will have a student release form on file at the school before the visit.

Transportation will be provided to transport students from their schools to the site and return (time 10:00 am – 1:00 pm).

There will be no cost to the Board.

D. H1N1 Vaccinator Training (Wright)

It is recommended that Camden County Health Services provide H1N1 vaccinator training to Camden City Public Schools’ nurses during their professional in-service on October 21, 2009 at the One-Stop in Camden from 1:00 pm to 3:30 pm.

There will be no cost to the Board.

E. H1N1 Vaccines (Wright)

It is recommended that Camden City Public Schools administer the H1N1 vaccine free of charge to District Pre-K -12 th grade students, district health care providers, and district staff on November 17th, 19th, and December 12th. School locations will be Catto, Bonsall, Sumner, Molina, and Coopers Poynt schools.

1. New Teacher Orientation (Wright)

It is recommended that New Teacher Orientation #2 be held October 21, 2009 (District One-session In-service Day) at the Riggs Adult Education Center Training Room, 2:00 pm to 5:30 pm. New teachers listed on the August and September Superintendent’s Reports who did not attend New Teacher Orientation #1 held in August 2009 will be invited to attend. The only cost will be for stipends.

1. Gospel Ensemble Ratification

It is recommended that permission be granted for the Creative Arts High School Gospel Ensemble to perform as the opening choir for Tye Tribbett (gospel artist) on October 16, 2009 at the Scottish Rite Auditorium, Collingswood, NJ. This is a benefit concert for the Boys and Girls Club. Time: 8:00 p.m. Transportation provided by the Boys and Girls Club

2. SAT Workshop

It is recommended that permission be granted to Alpha Kappa Alpha to sponsor a District SAT Workshop at Creative Arts High School, Saturday, October 24, 2009, 8:00 am-1:00 pm. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Theta Pi Omega Chapter, will provide presenters. All Camden 11t h and 12th grade students are invited.

Refreshments for approximately 100 participants will not exceed $200 ($2 per person). Security and custodian will already be working in the building.

C. Hatch Middle School (Treece

1. Stock Market Game Ratification

It is recommended that permission be granted for Hatch Middle School to participate in the Stock Market Game, sponsored by the NJ Council on Economic Education, 3:05 pm-3:50 pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays, October 5-December 11, 2009.

D. Lanning Square Elementary School (Kirwin)

1. Mural Project

It is recommended that permission be granted for Lanning Square Elementary School to research and facilitate a Mural Project as an after school activity, under the guidance of Ms. Jane Lippincott, Art Teacher, and Mr. Harold Blum, Guidance Counselor, 3:30 pm-4:30 pm, Tuesday- Thursday, October 21, 2009-May 2010, 1 day per week. School Security Officer, Mr. Julio Soto, will provide security @ $18.98 per hour, 4:00 pm-4:30 pm, not to exceed 30 hours.

E. McGraw Elementary School (Kirwin)

1. Reading Star Program

It is recommended that permission be granted for McGraw Elementary School to participate in the Reading STAR program, sponsored by Greater Philadelphia Cares and the employees of Prudential Fox & Roach Realtors. Students will participate in a phonics-based tutorial literacy program. On a weekly base, (1 hr. session) students will receive individualized instruction based on current reading levels. Sessions will begin Thursday, October 22, 2009 and conclude Thursday, June 11, 2010.

A. Compensatory Mathematics Tutorial Services Ratification (Wright)

It is recommended that permission be granted for Special Services to employ Ms. Patricia Brooks, Mathematics Teacher, Woodrow Wilson High School, to provide compensatory Mathematics tutorial services for student (E.P.). Compensatory instruction will be provided for 40 hours, $29 per hour, September - December 2009.

VII. Curriculum & Instruction

A. Alternative Education (Mills)

1. Truancy Reduction Program

It is recommended that permission be granted for The Office of Alternative Education to participate in the Truancy Reduction Program, sponsored by Angel M. Osorio, Community Justice Director of the Camden County Prosecutor’s Office, during the 2009-2010 school year. Academic support will be provided to students through a comprehensive program utilizing assessment and services at the Welcome New Jersey facility on Mt. Ephraim Avenue at 3 middle schools for 12 students. Each school will identify four students for participation. The program will operate as a pilot. The middle schools are:

Morgan Village Middle School South Camden Alternative School Veterans Memorial Middle School

Welcome New Jersey will provide transportation for students every Wednesday, October 27, 2009-June 2010.
