At times like this it is easy to feel restless and unsettled, particularly when you find yourself in unfamiliar surroundings without your usual landmarks and points of reference. Catching the train into London, it felt very strange looking out the window not recognising where I was, seeing different stations after my familiarity with the route from Liverpool Street, the District and Central lines. The date of my collation service, 15 June, is also the day that the church remembers Evelyn Underhill. She wrote on prayer and Celebrating Rev Morag’s service of Collation: (left to right) Rev Jane Peters, the spiritual life, in particular Christian Rt Rev James Langstaff, Rev Morag Finch, Rev Richard Finch mysticism, in the early twentieth century. BECKENHAM COPERS COPE & KANGLEY BRIDGE Character The introduction of the railway in mid-Victorian times saw Beckenham develop from a small village into a town on the edge of suburbia. The majority of dwellings in the area are Victorian with some 1940’s and 50’s flats and houses. On the whole houses tend to have fair sized gardens; however, where there are smaller dwellings and flatted developments there is a lack of available off-street parking. During the later part of the 20th century a significant number of Victorian villas were converted or replaced by modern blocks of flats or housing. Ten conservation areas have been established to help preserve and enhance the appearance of the area reflecting the historic character of the area.

  • Send Me! July Sees Many of Our Young People in Shortlands Contemplating Their Future
SHORTLANDS PARISH NEWS St. Mary’s church endeavours to bring the love of God into the everyday lives of the people of Shortlands twwwh.stmareysshorStlands.orgP.uk AJuly 2019N Year 39 Number 7 Send me! July sees many of our young people in Shortlands contemplating their future. They have finished school and exams which will determine future school, university, and work places. They will be thinking about their skills, what they find interesting, and what their inner self, or gut feeling, is calling them to pursue. At St. Mary's we are very fortunate to have a strong Ministry Team of people who felt called to work in different areas of life within the church and the Shortlands community. We are blessed with people who use their God-given gifts to support the church whether through floristry, administrative, gardening, cleaning, music, teaching or catering skills, to name but a few. None of us are special; we are all ordinary people who, over the years, have listened and answered the call from God. Discerning what God wants us to do with our lives isn't easy. Christians have answered Jesus' call to follow Him, just as the disciples did two thousand years ago. It has taken me nearly sixty years to discern God's direction for me. I became a committed Christian as a teen- ager, when I 'promised to serve you to the end', as the hymn goes. I have faithfully done so through the ups and downs of life by listening, finding out, questioning, praying, studying and answering when the call came.

  • Shortlands & Clay Hill
Shortlands & Clay Hill A history by Keith Baldwin Previously part of Beckenham parish Shortlands became a separate parish constituted in 1868. It currently looks like this. Source St Mary’s Church Shortlands The original parish boundary between Beckenham and Bromley was the River Ravensbourne (rather than the railway) so what we refer to as Shortlands Village today was in fact in Bromley parish. It was William Arthur Wilkinson, owner of Shortlands House (now Bishop Challoner School) who in 1863 registered the 137 acres of his estate at the newly formed Land Registry, complete with a road and plot plan, and bequeathed sufficient monies to erect a church in the middle. The area was to develop gradually as gentleman’s villas on generous plots. The area covered by Shortlands today was not held by just one landowner historically but by many with changing ownerships over time. It was largely undeveloped, the only dwellings being a farm (opposite what is now Shortlands Station) and the loose hamlet of Clay Hill. This 1863 map shows a few station cottages too. 1863 Ordnance Survey (National Library of Scotland) The area of Clay Hill appears to have covered the area from Chancery Lane as far as Shortlands House and consisted of Clayhill Cottage adjacent to Chancery Lane occupied by Mr Louis Schillio a horse breeder, Clayhill (here but more often referred to as The Hall), Oakery Cottage, Oakwood (previously The Oakery until 1848), “Scotts House” and Shortlands House together with five other small cottages near to Oakery Cottage. On early maps the lane leading south East from Oakery Cottage is referred to as Green Lane and that between the end of Green Lane and Bromley Road as Short Lands Lane (which also led south to Pickards Green).
