Metropolitan Cathedral Church and Minor Basilica of St Chad, Birmingham

Episcopal Ordination of The Reverend Canon Stephen Wright & The Reverend Canon David Evans as Auxiliary Bishops of Birmingham

Friday 9 October 2020 Feast of St

I warmly welcome all of you today for the Episcopal Ordination of Canon David Evans and Canon Stephen Wright. Your presence with us is a tribute to all that they have offered through their own work as priests within the Archdiocese of Birmingham.

A special welcome is also extended to the members of both their families present with us in the Cathedral today and those who are joining via the Livestream.

Although we gather during these unsettling days of the COVID pandemic, it is with a sense of great joy and gratitude that I am able, together with Bishop David McGough and Bishop William Kenney, to ordain Canon David and Canon Stephen for service here in the Archdiocese of Birmingham. I ask you to join me in praying for our new Auxiliary Bishops as they begin their ministry.

 Bernard Longley of Birmingham

Bishop Stephen Wright

Thank you to everyone who has participated in this , here at St. Chad’s Cathedral and via the live stream of the Mass. Thank you to all who have ensured the safe and generous welcome here at St. Chad’s.

“My grace is enough for you,” (2Cor 12:9) are God’s words that have been in my thoughts and prayers since I was appointed an Assistant Bishop back in March. While reflecting on his own weaknesses, at prayer St. Paul is reassured by these words that God speaks to him. They embolden him to minister in the Lord’s name.

Please pray with me that God will similarly reassure and embolden us all today. We need that true hope especially in these challenging days. COVID is a terrible thorn in our flesh. We pray it passes soon but God’s grace is indeed enough for us. Let us welcome that grace, work with it and be the Lord’s missionary disciples.

I am blessed and privileged to be called to serve the people, clergy, parishes and schools of and the Black Country. I look forward to working with our brothers and sisters of other Christian denominations, of other religions and with people of no faith. As Pope Francis reminds us in Fratelli Tutti we are all brothers and sisters and we are called to love without borders.

I thank Bishop David McGough for his exemplary ministry in this pastoral area. I look forward to continuing to work alongside Archbishop Bernard Longley and his Assistant Bishops, whether active or retired and all the Bishops. I thank them all for their generosity, wisdom and kindness as I do my brother priests and deacons.

Finally, God has graced me with my loving family, friends throughout the years and the parishioners it was my joy and privilege to serve in Stechford, Banbury and Burton. Today I offer an unworthy yes to the will of God to serve as a Bishop. Please pray that I will let God’s grace work in me in the years ahead and let me see God’s grace at work in others.

God bless.

+ Stephen

Bishop David Evans

In recent weeks I have been surrounded and supported by prayers, blessings, greetings, cards, cake, chocolates and good wishes, in response to my appointment as an auxiliary bishop of Birmingham. They have emphasised the many ways in which a priest, consciously and unawares, radiates the presence of the person of Jesus Christ to those ready to receive him, whether through chance meetings, casual encounters, formal appointments or the celebration of the Sacraments. Please pray for me that in assisting Archbishop Bernard, as a friend of priests and deacons, and as a servant of God’s people I may continue to be that presence wherever my vocation calls me.

+ David

Opening hymn

Praise to the holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise, in all his words most wonderful, most sure in all his ways.

O loving wisdom of our God! When all was sin and shame, A second Adam to the fight and to the rescue came.

O wisest love! that flesh and blood, which did in Adam fail, should strive afresh against their foe, should strive and should prevail;

And that a higher gift than grace should flesh and blood refine, God’s presence and his very self, and essence all-divine.

O generous love! that he who smote in man for man the foe, the double agony in Man for man should undergo;

And in the garden secretly, and on the cross on high, should teach his brethren, and inspire to suffer and to die.

Praise to the Holiest in the height, and in the depth be praise, in all his words most wonderful, most sure in all his ways.

St John Henry Newman

The Introductory Rites

Archbishop In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All Amen.

Archbishop Peace be with you. All And with your spirit.

The Archbishop welcomes all present and introduces the Mass

Archbishop Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries.

All I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.

Archbishop May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life. All Amen.

Kyrie & Gloria Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo - FJ Haydn (1732-1809)

Collect

Archbishop O God, who bestowed on your Priest Saint John Henry Newman the grace to follow your kindly light and find peace in your Church; graciously grant that, through his intercession and example, we may be led out of shadows and images into the fullness of your truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. All Amen

Liturgy of the Word

First Reading A reading from the first letter of St Paul to the Corinthians 2:10-16

The Spirit reaches the depths of everything, even of God. After all, the depths of a man can only be known by his own spirit, not by any other man, and in the same way the depths of God can only be known by the Spirit of God. Now instead of the spirit of the world, we have received the Spirit that comes from God, to teach us to understand the gifts that he has given us. Therefore, we teach, not in the way in which philosophy is taught, but in the way that the Spirit teaches us: we teach spiritual things spiritually. An unspiritual person is one who does not accept anything of the Spirit of God: he sees it all as nonsense; it is beyond his understanding because it can only be understood by means of the Spirit. A spiritual man, on the other hand, is able to judge the value of everything, and his own value is not to be judged by other men. As scripture says: Who can know the mind of the Lord, so who can teach him? But we are those who have the mind of Christ.

Reader The word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm

R. The Lord is just in all his ways.

1 The Lord is kind and full of compassion, slow to anger, abounding in love. How good is the Lord to all, compassionate to all his creatures. R

2 All your creatures shall thank you, O Lord, and your friends shall repeat their blessing. They shall speak of the glory of your reign and declare your might, O God, to make known to men your mighty deeds and the glorious splendour of your reign. R

3 Yours is an everlasting kingdom; your rule lasts from age to age. The Lord is faithful in all his words and loving in all his deeds. The Lord supports all who fall and raises all who are bowed down. R

Gospel Acclamation

Choir Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia The word of God is alive and active; it can judge secret emotions and thoughts. Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia

Deacon The Lord be with you. All And with your spirit. Deacon A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew 13:47-52 All Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus said to the crowds, ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a dragnet cast into the sea that brings in a haul of all kinds. When it is full, the fishermen haul it ashore; then, sitting down, they collect the good ones in a basket and throw away those that are no use. This is how it will be at the end of time: the angels will appear and separate the wicked from the just to throw them into the blazing furnace where there will be weeping and grinding of teeth.

‘Have you understood all this?’ They said ‘Yes.’ And he said to them, ‘Well then, every scribe who becomes a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who brings out from his storeroom things both new and old.’

Deacon The Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Please remain standing whilst the, Veni, Creator Spiritus is sung by the choir

Laying on of Hands

When all have stood up, the principal consecrator and the consecrating bishops lay hands upon the head of the bishops-elect, in silence.

Book of the Gospels

The principal consecrator places the open book of the Gospels upon the head of the bishops-elect; the priest supporters, standing at either side of the bishops-elect, hold the Book of the Gospels above their heads until the prayer of consecration is completed.

Prayer of Consecration

The Archbishop as Principal Consecrator extends his hands over the bishops-elect

God the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, Father of mercies and God of all consolation, you dwell in heaven, yet look with compassion on all that is humble. You know all things before they come to be; by your gracious word you have established the plan of your Church.

From the beginning you chose the descendants of Abraham to be your holy nation. You established rulers and priests, and did not leave your sanctuary without ministers to serve you. From the creation of the world you have been pleased to be glorified by those whom you have chosen.

The following part of the prayer is recited by the consecrating bishops, with hands joined:

So now pour out upon these chosen ones that power which is from you, the governing Spirit whom you gave to your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, the Spirit given by him to the holy apostles, who founded the Church in every place to be your temple for the unceasing glory and praise of your name.

Then the principal consecrator continues alone:

Father, you know all hearts. You have chosen your servants for the office of bishop. May they be shepherds to your holy flock, and high priests blameless in your sight, ministering to you night and day; may they always gain the blessing of your favour and offer the gifts of your holy Church. Through the Spirit who gives the grace of high priesthood grant them the power to forgive sins as you have commanded, to assign ministries as you have decreed, and to loose every bond by the authority which you gave to your apostles.

May they be pleasing to you by their gentleness and purity of heart, presenting a fragrant offering to you, through Jesus Christ, your Son, through whom glory and power and honour are yours with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, now and for ever. All Amen.

Anointing of the Bishop’s Head

The Archbishop anoints the head of the bishop with the Oil of Chrism.

Archbishop God has brought you to share the high priesthood of Christ. May he pour out on you the oil of mystical anointing and enrich you with spiritual blessings.

Presentation of the Book of the Gospels

The Archbishop hands the Book of the Gospels to the newly ordained bishop.

Archbishop Receive the Gospel and preach the word of God with unfailing patience and sound teaching.

Investiture with Ring, Mitre, and Pastoral Staff

The Archbishop places the ring on the finger of the new bishop’s right hand.

Archbishop Take this ring, the seal of your fidelity. With faith and love protect the bride of God, his holy Church.

Then the Archbishop places the mitre on the heads of the new bishops, in silence. Lastly, he gives the pastoral staff to the new bishops.

Archbishop Take this staff as a sign of your pastoral office: keep watch over the whole flock in which the Holy Spirit has appointed you to shepherd the Church of God.

Seating of the Bishop

The newly ordained bishops are invited to take the first place amongst the consecrating bishops.

Kiss of Peace

The newly ordained bishops receive the Kiss of Peace from the Archbishop and bow to the other bishops present.

Offertory Hymn

Firmly I believe and truly God is Three, and God is One; And I next acknowledge duly Manhood taken by the Son.

And I trust and hope most fully In that Manhood crucified; And each thought and deed unruly Do to death, as he has died.

Simply to his grace and wholly Light and life and strength belong, And I love supremely, solely, Him the holy, him the strong.

And I hold in veneration, For the love of him alone, Holy Church as his creation, And her teachings as his own.

Adoration ay be given, With and through the angelic host, To the God of earth and heaven, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

St John Henry Newman (1801-90)

Liturgy of the Eucharist

Archbishop Pray, brothers and sisters, that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father.

All May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Prayer over the Offerings

Archbishop Accept, O heavenly Father, this holy sacrifice that we offer in commemoration of Saint John Henry Newman for your praise and greater glory and for our salvation. Through Christ our Lord. All Amen.

Archbishop The Lord be with you. All And with your spirit. Archbishop Lift up your hearts. All We lift them up to the Lord. Archbishop Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right and just.

Archbishop It is truly right and just, our duty and our salvation, always and everywhere to give you thanks, Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God.

For by the anointing of the Holy Spirit you made your Only Begotten Son High Priest of the new and eternal covenant, and by your wondrous design were pleased to decree that his one Priesthood should continue in the Church.

For Christ not only adorns with a royal priesthood the people he has made his own, but with a brother’s kindness he also chooses men to become sharers in his sacred ministry through the laying on of hands.

They are to renew in his name the sacrifice of human redemption, to set before your children the paschal banquet, to lead your holy people in charity, to nourish them with the word and strengthen them with the Sacraments.

As they give up their lives for you and for the salvation of their brothers and sisters, they strive to be conformed to the image of Christ himself and offer you a constant witness of faith and love.

And so, Lord, with all the Angels and Saints, we, too, give you thanks, as in exultation we acclaim:

Sanctus Mass VIII

Eucharist Prayer III

Archbishop You are indeed Holy, O Lord, and all you have created rightly gives you praise, for through your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, by the power and working of the Holy Spirit, you give life to all things and make them holy, and you never cease to gather a people to yourself, so that from the rising of the sun to its setting a pure sacrifice may be offered to your name.

CC Therefore, O Lord, we humbly implore you: by the same Spirit graciously make holy these gifts we have brought to you for consecration, that they may become the Body and  Blood of your Son our Lord Jesus Christ, at whose command we celebrate these mysteries.

For on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread, and giving you thanks, he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT, FOR THIS IS MY BODY, WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and giving you thanks, he said the blessing, and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT, FOR THIS IS THE CHAILCE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT, WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS.

DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

Archbishop The mystery of faith.

When we eat this Bread and drink this Cup, we proclaim your death, O Lord, until you come again.

Archbishop Therefore, O Lord, as we celebrate the memorial of the saving Passion of your Son, his wondrous Resurrection and Ascension into heaven, and as we look forward to his second coming, we offer you in thanksgiving this holy and living sacrifice.

Look, we pray, upon the oblation of your Church and, recognizing the sacrificial Victim by whose death you willed to reconcile us to yourself, grant that we, who are nourished by the Body and Blood of your Son and filled with his Holy Spirit, may become one body, one spirit in Christ.

Bishop David May he make of us an eternal offering to you, so that we may obtain an inheritance with your elect, especially with the most Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God, with blessed Joseph, her spouse, with your blessed Apostles and glorious Martyrs with St Chad, St John Henry Newman and with all the Saints, on whose constant intercession in your presence we rely for unfailing help.

Bishop William May this sacrifice of our reconciliation, we pray, O Lord, advance the peace and salvation of all the world. Be pleased to confirm in faith and charity your pilgrim Church on earth, with your servant Francis our Pope Bernard our Bishop, and me, your unworthy servant, and these your servants, David and Stephen, who have been ordained today as shepherds for the Church, with the Order of Bishops, all the clergy, and the entire people you have gained for your own. Listen graciously to the prayers of this family, whom you have summoned before you: in your compassion, O merciful Father, gather to yourself all your children scattered throughout the world.

Bishop Stephen To our departed brothers and sisters and to all who were pleasing to you at their passing from this life, give kind admittance to your kingdom. There we hope to enjoy for ever the fullness of your glory through Christ our Lord, through whom you bestow on the world all that is good.

Archbishop & Through him, and with him, and in him, Concelebrants O God, almighty Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory and honour is yours, for ever and ever. Amen.

The Communion Rite

Archbishop At the Saviour’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed by thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Archbishop Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Saviour, Jesus Christ.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever.

Archbishop Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign for ever and ever.

Archbishop The peace of the Lord be with you always. All And with your spirit.

Agnus Dei

Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Archbishop Behold the Lamb of God, behold him who takes away the sins of the world. Blessed are those called to the supper of the Lamb.

All Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

Communion

Agnus Dei - Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo - FJ Haydn (1732-1809)

Anima Christi – Dan Callow

Prayer after Communion

Archbishop O Lord, as we rejoice to receive Christ, the living Bread, on this feast day of Saint John Henry Newman, so may our witness be made more real, never moving minds without touching hearts. Through Christ our Lord. All Amen.

The Concluding Rite

As the Te Deum is sung, Bishop David and Bishop Stephen will bless the assembled congregation. Blessing & Dismissal

Archbishop The Lord be with you. All And with your spirit.

Archbishop Blessed be the name of the Lord. All Now and for ever.

Archbishop Our help is in the name of the Lord. All Who made heaven and earth.

Archbishop May almighty God bless you, the Father, and the Son,  and the Holy  Spirit. All Amen.

Deacon Go in peace, glorifying the Lord by your life. All Thanks be to God.

Recessional Hymn

O Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder, consider all the worlds thy hand hast made, I see the stars, I hear the rolling thunder, thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, my Saviour God to thee: How great thou art, how great thou art. (x2)

And when I think that God, his Sion not sparing, sent him to die, I scarce can take it in that on the cross, my burden gladly bearing, he bled and died to take away my sin.

When Christ shall come with shout of acclamation and take me home, what joy shall fill my heart; when I shall bow in humble adoration, and there proclaim; my God, how great thou art.
