And we’re just getting started. TOMORROW CAN’T WAIT. Every day, we’re discovering, researching, teaching and thinking about patient care in entirely new ways. By isolating cardiomyocytes, our cardiovascular researchers are finding the genetic causes of heart problems— before a patient even has one. And we can’t wait to show you what’s next. Opening the OLLI at UVa Course Catalog is a great step on this leg of your journey of lifelong learning. I encourage you to take your time and read about each of our courses and outings. They will satisfy your curiosity, spark your creativity, challenge and amuse you. I’d like to share with you that our online registration system is available for use on July 25! You may remember that we took it off line during the last registration cycle due to a confluence of malfunctions resulting in non-recorded registrations, over charges, and frustration all around. We have worked all spring to resolve and repair the issues with the server, our database, and the online registration site; we’ve tested it thoroughly in a development environment and in our live environment. It is fully functional and I assure you that you can use it with confidence. You will find instructions on how to register online on page 52. In addition to Sessions A and B, check out our Summer Session beginning in August. It features three lectures, accompanied by a little wine and cheese set in historic Michie Tavern as well as a new course from an old favorite. You’ll find the schedule on page 4. OLLI at UVa is always seeking ways to build on the success of the semester that just closed. That search led us to an opportunity to offer an OLLI at UVa level course set in historic Berlin, Germany. Our own Gordon Stewart created the course “Seminar in Berlin” complete with daily lectures, color commentary at the various points of interest, and bibliography of supplemental reading. Gordon, along with his Seminar Assistant Lloyd Raupp and his Tour Director, Linda Hahn, will ensure that the group will experience the culture and learn the history and complexities of Berlin. This October 2017 trip is a joint initiative with Senior Center, Inc. and is a model we hope to continue to use. Join us at Taste of OLLI in July to preview some of the semesters offerings. We host this event in Charlottesville, Nellysford, and Staunton. You meet instructors, fellow students, and learn more of what is new. I hope you’ll come and bring a friend - this is a fun way to get to know OLLI at UVa. There are regular opportunities for new courses and new faculty. If you are interested in teaching for OLLI, we’d love to know about you! v The dedicated class assistants? Also volunteers. Class Assistants perform “logistical” duties which allow the instructor to focus on teaching. Please indicate your interest in learning more about being a class assistant by checking the “willing to assist” box when you register for classes. v Of course, the OLLI Board of Directors and committee members
