World day (WRD) is celebrated each year on 26 June. It is an international day of awareness to raise the profile of the refrigeration, air-conditioning and heat-pump sectors. The day focuses on the significant role that the industry and its technology play in so many elements surrounding us every day.

Refrigeration is essentially at the centre of modern life by enabling people to live, travel and work in comfortable environments while saving lives in places like medical facilities, and further providing very wide-reaching access to fresh produce.

WRD was initiated as the idea of former president of the Institute of Refrigeration in the UK, Stephen Gill, and the inaugural WRD took place in 2019 and was declared an immediate and monumental success with 153 countries around the world participating.

WRD was initiated as the idea of former president of the Institute of Refrigeration in the UK, Stephen Gill, and the inaugural WRD Message from the industry: John Parry, director at 52 Engineering took place in 2019 and was declared an and SAQCCGas immediate and monumental success with 153 countries around the world participating.

The theme for the 2021 WRD will focus on careers in the refrigeration, air-conditioning and industry and will aim to inspire students and young professionals – both men and women – in all countries, to meet the challenges faced in their communities, many of which are linked to essential services.

For both young aspiring professionals entering the sector and old-hands alike, have seen a lot of airtime, with many discussions globally taking place in terms of ozone depleting substances (ODS) and global warming potential (GWP) and the subsequent actions required to meet the targets of the Kigali amendment to the Montreal Protocol and movement towards natural refrigerants. The US Biden administration has already shown great support in this movement towards a greener world while Europe is in the process of reviewing the topical F-Gas Regulation.

South Africa as a signee to both the amendment and protocol puts us in a place of legal compliance. Training is one element that needs to be at the forefront of the changing landscape, especially when considering some of the natural refrigerants are flammable. This leads directly into the SAIRAC Technical Talk that will be presented.

Mayekawa South Africa

Mayekawa South Africa introduces the locally produced Thermoshutter Air Curtains. Thermoshutter is an air curtain that prevents air from entering and exiting a facility through openings where there are different temperatures on each side. An average thermal blocking efficiency rate of 75% (Mayekawa study) can be achieved.

This air curtain prevents warm air from flowing in and cold air from flowing out through openings in cold store facilities where activities such as food production and distribution are taking place, solving problems such as rising storage temperatures and increased costs for cooling equipment.

New refrigerant safe handling national Date: 10 June 2021 skills programme Time: 18h00 Presented by: Grant Laidlaw Click here to register

Synopsis of the talk:

With South Africa signing the Kigali amendment to the Montreal Protocol there is increasing momentum towards natural refrigerants. Training needs to be at the forefront of the changing landscape, especially when considering the fact that some of the natural refrigerants are flammable.

The safe handling of refrigerants curriculum, training material and assessments have been revised on a national level. SARACCA has mandated the new national safe handling curriculum which is being registered as a national skills program. This milestone has been achieved with inputs from UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization) and the D.F.F.E. (Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment).

What does this all mean? How will it impact industry? When will it all come into effect? Grant will discuss the implementation of the new National Handling National Skills Program and the process moving forward.
